I think Bloom's goal is young pitching prospects. We'll see if the above happens.

I think you're right, but at the same time, I think Henry's goal is to remain competitive this season.

We need major league ready starting pitching.

Or keep the money as is and take Meada and one more prospect.

I'd demand Maeda and one more pitching prospect, but have my doubts that Bloom's long past working for Friedman has prevented any demands on Boston's part. Why else would Bloom agree to take someone else's prospect (unless he really wanted Brusdar -- but more than May or Gray?)? It better not just end up being Caleb Ferguson...

Though, after all, LA is doing us such a big favor taking Price that we already thanked them by throwing in a Hall of Famer.

If the Dodgers don't budge, the Red Sox either have to accept an even worse return -- and further alienate fandom and suffer the wrath of media -- or nix the whole deal, give Mookie his $400 million and take one cent on the dollar for anyone to take Price; that guy has to stay gone for good.

I vote for the latter, somehow, some way... at least most fans will like that plan, Bloom, Henry, the brand and the laundry. Right now, they don't like much about any of those...

If the kid is damaged goods (not that I trust the Sox medical staff), how are we being dumb?

We are dumb in the unlikely event that we are backing out due to the backlash, not the medicals on the kid.

Because damaged goods is only part of the equation apparently. The post is about the backlash issue only.

IMO this deal will get done because the two main protagonists or "negotiating partners" want it to get done. The Twins might add something, the Dodgers might add something. Who knows. But I very much doubt the deal gets railroaded over the one armed bandit pitcher with the weight problem.

I'm thinking this better get done tonight, before the columnists stoke the hopes of the entire Red Sox Nation of keeping Mookie... because if ownership has a second chance to keep Betts and blows it again, the revolt may be more than a walk-out; the front office may be sacked, and Gammons might usurp Bloom, with Manny as his sergeant at harm.

The whole idea is absurd.

The perception may be as important as the truth.

Or not.

I know this is far fetched .What if John Henry is upset after thinking Mookie didn’t want to be here via reports and now the same reports have him crushed he got traded and Mookie even expressed it to John ? What if this is not about an injured twin but a window of negotiations with Mookie himself ? What if this is back channeled away from Scott and Scott found out ? What if 12 years 400 is on the table with incentives that reach 450 ? Or several option years .I only say this because frankly it would make John a Legend along with his spanking new GM

The medicals opened the door to closing the door, in order to mollify the backlash.

If the Sox are going to back out of a trade that I expect they put a lot of time, effort, and thought into, then shame on them. They will look foolish.

I agree, it's absurd.

OTOH, I have mentioned time and again the Henry has a tendency to panic. There is no way that he should consider backing out of this trade due to backlash, but it wouldn't be the first time that he's acted rashly.

If Mookie wanted to stay in Boston that badly, he should have been a little more reasonable in his demands.

Not likely at all. Mookie doesn’t hate Boston, but he was offered 300 million reasons to stay and it didn’t convince him.

Not to mention this scenario involves Henry learning everything about Mookie via reports. While the two probably don’t hang much, safe bet they know each other better than that...

Sure, but what to make of the quotes from Jim Rice -- current Red Sox employee -- who said he talked to Mookie Tuesday and Wednesday? Might Betts' words have Henry reconsidering, even just a smidge? It's not like he hasn't changed his mind and approach to how his club should be run several times, especially in this most contradictory past year...

He was perfectly reasonable. He said he wanted to test free agency to see what his worth was on the open market, and the owner in the best position to pay him that was JH. Now that we know JH values his bank account more than he values the best player in the league and probably the most popular player in Boston, we can act accordingly.

We can still pay Betts next winter.

This deal had to be made. It will still be made- in some form or another.

So your boss tells you "We don't think you're worth more than 75% of what others do." Your boss then, likely without consulting you, ships you off 3000 miles away for a year, not for your own good, but simply to save himself some money. After that year, your former boss says, "OK. Are you ready to talk now?" What would you do?

It’d be worse if he backs out now.

Sox should have been more reasonable in their offer.

We don't know what others will offer Betts next winter. We don't know the $300M deal we offered Betts was our top offer. We don't know what was said to Mookie or his agent about next winter.

I'm not saying we can or will bring him back next winter, but if we reset, we'll have a better chance than if we kept him and did not reset.

The mega tax would make it impossible to re-sign Betts.

Maybe, Bloom & Co. know there is no way we will re-sign Betts. If that's true, trading him was the right thing to do.

Maybe Bloom & Coo think we might have a chance but money will be tight. Trading him HAD to be done, in this case.

Maybe Bloom & Co.think we will make a strong play for Betts next winter. Trading him was still the right thing to do to lessen the total cost of the offer we make.

Offering $400M/10 is one thing, but asking us to pay a 50% tax on most or all of it, even for a few years, makes the idea all but impossible.

Sox should have been more reasonable in their offer.

Do we know, if a counter offer was made, or if the Betts camp set a price and said offer this now or we're 100% going to free agency?

Maybe $300M/10 is the most we'd ever offer. If that is true, I think it's a mistake but certainly reasonable, and if so, trading him had to happen.

Mostly laugh at the analogy...

300/10 is not reasonable for Betts. Pay him more!

It's not a bad opening offer, but I do think he's worth way more.

I doubt he gets $420M/10.

The middle ground is $360M/10. I'd be happy to get him at that.
