Good grief! JD still unsigned. The Mookie situation unresolved. Not one draft pick. Not a single trade. No attempt to address the pitching staff. Still over the salary cap and no decision on Rusney?? What a mess he's left for the next GM! Time to admit one's mistakes and move on fast.

That there has been no public activity on the front makes me think it’s likely being handled internally. And might be further along then we realize...

I didn't realize Perez was Houston bench coach in 2013 -- the last person the Sox want taking over would be a former Astros coach (as unfair as that may be).

There's definitely a contrast between Houston's and Boston's managerial searches; the Astros seem to have different candidates or interviewees listed on MLB every day now, while the Sox have maintained radio silence. It could be they're going internal or they already know who's in charge and are choosing not to announce it yet.

I'd be surprised if they hung an "interim" label on a hire... it would be hard to take them seriously about moving forward while using a term for "temporary" (this most likely needs to be longer than a few months of Morgan magic or Torey Lovullo).

I'm ok with Tek -- always expected him to be the first to manage from the '04 squad (at least over Roberts and Kapler)... though for some reason I can't explain I sense Lowell may command more respect from this current roster.

They may be waiting for the commissioners report to see if it's feasible to bring back Cora in 12 months. Could be the difference between interim and making the plunge on somebody like Tek.

Just reported that Tek is more interested this time around. If he is, the job is his

Positive? I’ve actually heard only Roenicke’s name as an internal candidate...

Varitek is currently a special assistant to Chaim Bloom, Chief Baseball Officer.

How about letting Tek actually be a bench coach or AAA manager first?

@JonHeyman

Jason Varitek seems to be more willing to consider managing this time around. Beloved in Boston.

Tek to bench coach. Roenicke to manager. Move on...

I'm a huge Tek fan, but I question his readiness to be a manager.

He may be the best we can find, at this point, and he'll likely just be an interim manager anyways, unless the team over achieves under him.

The guy know baseball and knows the opposition very well.

Why are they shooting for "interim manager?" Why not just get someone who can stick around?

if there was electronic sign stealing going on in 2018 and/or 2019 i do NOT want any coach that was in the dugout either of those 2 seasons to stay employed by the Boston Red Sox let alone become their manager.....

I do think a lot of people are ignoring Roenicke, who managed a low budget Milwaukee team to 335-313 record over 4 years. He might actually be a good choice. Certainly his experience is not bad at all...

The only concern is "what if he's dragged into the investigation mess?"

At that point, you move on. We don’t even know yet if there is a mess to drag anyone in to.

It’s interesting that Roenicke is already implicated, and according to some, these scandals clearly involve upper management and ownership, which should implicate Tek. But going outside (where you really don’t know what the guy was doing) is how the Sox got into this mess.

Just promote Roenicke and move on. He’s been around the league and even managed teams before without any cheating scandals...

Yeah, that's when you'd just grab and older guy like Dusty and just train Varitek for the year.

If Dusty is into it, I'd take him in a heartbeat. make VTek the bench coach and see what happens.

I’ve mentioned Baker as a candidate. The problem with him is that his phone is ringing off the hook this past week...

Not according to his most recent interview. He stated the Sox and Mets hadn't contacted him.

JANUARY 19: To this point, neither the Mets nor the Red Sox have reached out to Baker to discuss their respective positions, he tells reporters, including Brian McTaggart of MLB.com (Twitter link). Baker will interview for the Astros’ managerial job tomorrow.

Clearly the Mets dialed the wrong number. Later this week, expect them to announce their new manager Dusty Barker...
