Playing Encarnacion over Brett Gardner is a huge upgrade.

What I don’t get is why a lot of other teams passed. Plenty of teams could use him, and certainly the Yankee offer was easily toppable.

While I don’t agree, I see why Boston passed. Money, and DD has a thing for Mitch Moreland. But Houston? Why? Was the salary too much for Tampa and Milwaukee? Maybe neither wanted to offer a good enough prospect to get Seattle to cover more? Why not Texas? They could use him and show the league they have no intention of fading away quietly. The Rockies and the Diamondbacks could have also used him. Imagine EE in Coors!

But everyone passed. And no way did DiPoto not do his due diligence and ask. Probably asked other teams, too...

Bingo ... and it's Dipoto with a lower-case p.

My least favorite Mariners trade of recent years was the Jean Segura, James Pazos and Juan Nicasio* trade to Philadelphia for J.P. Crawford and Carlos Santana.

But Santana was flipped 10 days later to Cleveland for Edwin Encarnacion, who was traded Saturday for Juan Then, plus a competitive balance pick that was used earlier this month to select Arkansas righthander Isaiah Campbell.

So the Segura trade has netted:

24-year-old shortstop J.P. Crawford, who has posted 0.6 fWAR in 20 games and preserved another year of team control after starting the season in the minors

19-year-old righthander Juan Then, whom I suspect was more highly regarded by Seattle GM Jerry Dipoto than by many posters on this forum

21-year-old Isaiah Campbell, the Arkansas righthander who followed up his dominant season in the powerful SEC with seven shutout innings (10 K) Saturday in the College World Series

The Segura trade is starting to make more sense for a club with an eye for the future.

* Segura has posted 1.5 fWAR in 61 games, Pazos was traded for a minor leaguer and Nicasio has posted 0.1 fWAR for his $9.25 million salary.

Maybe not.

Dipoto did once trade Then away to acquire the immortal Nick Rumbelow. I don’t think he prized Then much at that time.

Certainly the folks at Fangraphs didn’t think Then was much of a prize, describing him as having “middling stuff and physical projection” and assigning him a modest Future Value of 40. The same value is met or exceeded by 22 prospects in the Red Sox farm system, the same system you said the Mariners would “not be interested in spare parts from.”

Fangraphs also cites a Buster Olney tweet stating the Mariners dealt EE to the Yankees because the Yankees were willing to absorb more money.

Sounds like a straight up salary dump...

Then took a big step forward last year in stuff and command.

And yet his FV is still only 40. That’s not a bad Future Value, but most teams have 20 or so players with an FV that high or higher...

MLB Prospect Watch offers this report on Juan Then, who was born in 2000: "Then has successfully navigated two years of Rookie ball thanks to advanced pitchability. In his first season with his new organization, he led the Gulf Coast League in WHIP (0.98) and finished third in opponent average (.210). He was waiting to make his 2019 debut when he was sent back to the Mariners in June's Edwin Encarnacion deal."

Juan Then may amount to nothing -- or something -- but Edwin Encarnacion did not fit into Seattle's long-range plans.

FanGraphs gave the much-ballyhooed Bobby Dalbec a Future Value of 40+ as the Seattle native approaches his 24th birthday this month.

The ceiling of a 19-year-old might be preferred over the ceiling of a nearly 24-year-old.

Or not.:)

Edwin Encarnacion was not tied up long term, so that’s ok.

My point is, they could have gotten a better prospect(s), but Seattle prioritized not paying money.

This has been confirmed in multiple media outlets. (Buster Olney on Twitter and whoever that was Carpin posted a link to.)

Even you expected more than a single rookie ball teenager with an FV of 40 that the Mariners already traded away once for a borderline relief arm...

There is also a certain value in proximity to MLB.

Then might never see AA ball, as many, many don’t. Dalbec has already reached that hurdle...

That was my minor disappointment.

I've gotten over it.:)

NL teams probably passed because EE is defensively challenged.

One NL team I mentioned was Milwaukee, whose been using Jesus Aguilar and Eric Thames at first. Neither are exactly Kevin Youkilis with the glove.

The other was Colorado, who was apparently interested but not willing to eat as much money as the Yankees...

EE avg. 46 games a season at 1st base, there is a 162 game season. EE is a DH, that's it. Most he ever started was 78 games at 1st base that was in 2014. When he was 31 years old.

Good chance he breaks that season high this year, as he already has 45 starts.

Colorado was interested in him, and I am guessing they are well aware of how often they get to use a DH...

Hate on the Edwin Trade here's the truth ,we sure could have used him last night but instead he hit a HR for the Yankees furthering there division lead on the Redsox .I believe we drug our feet on him but we will never get an honest answer .

That EE homer helped put us one game closer to the Rays!!!!

Setting any money issues aside , acquiring Encarnacion would have resulted in sending Marco Hernandez back down (probably an OK move), and subsequently DFA'ing Pearce when he is physically ready (also OK).

When Moreland then came back, one more would need to go . A pitcher + 1 more when EO returns ? Chavis to AAA ? Nunez DFA'ed (not as long as Cora is managing) ? With both JDM and EE on the roster, DH is full, but it implies one or the other is in the field a lot more to get both bats going. Or you save one as the designated PH'er in late innings when there are RISPs and Leon coming up.

The bigger concern is that EE gives the Yankees one more big stick, but they will have to find a place for him too.

The other issue was EE's inability to play 1B even half the time.

We'd have had to play JD in the OF over half the time in order to keep EE in the line-up daily. We'd be benching our hottest hitter and GG OF'er to make that happen, or we'd be praying EE can play 1B FT and bench over $12M in contracts by Moreland & Pearce.

Perhaps it is time to start the "Trade JD Martinez" thread.

We know the answer.

The Sox couldn’t afford to take on as much cash as the Yankees...

We are now 7 games back of the Yankees even though we lost once in last 7 games .I would think that if we lose tonight it's time to make some kind of addition .

Yes!!! Panic time!!! The Yankees Magic Number is 77!!! Time’s getting short!!

As some posted in the game thread, he has looked really bad the past week or so. Very un-JD like.

He'll figure it out soon though, no doubt in my mind.

He will definitely figure it out.

It's just another reminder that hitting is hard, no matter how good you are.

wonder if something is going on at home/personal life??

That's always a possibility, and it's something that we as fans often forget, that these guys are human.

Or it might just be a slump, which all hitters, no matter how good, go through.

He never stops working hard even when he's going great. You know that it's frustrating him more than it's frustrating any of us.
