But only for short term...

Well, when you trade for 2 month rentals at the end of July, it can only be short term.

But Pearce and Eovaldi are still here...

There is no “panic button” to push. The late signing free agents have signed. The Sox don’t have a minor league system to overwhelm anyone into an early trade. The Sox don’t have the payroll space to give cash relief to another squad. At this point, the Sox need to throw offers out there that are competitive and try to offer the best package available. With only 8 teams out of the race (I added the Mets to the Jays, O’s, M’s, Royals, Tigers, Giants, and Marlins), there aren’t a lot of options available yet. The Giants have three very good relievers who are gonna go for a pretty penny. The Royals have Kennedy, who has a ridiculous contract for a newly minted reliever. The Mariners have nothing notable in their pen, as do the Marlins. The Mutts aren’t dealing from their pen after they went all in this year. Shane Greene is gonna move from Detroit, but he’ll bring a king’s Ransom. The O’s have Givens and Castro, but both have underperformed. The options right now are either not improvements or way too costly

I think you over estimate the value some of the deadline players will get in return. Players like Greene, who are more than 2 month rentals, will get more, but there will be some quality players obtained for peanuts- just like EE and Jay Bruce showed.

Due to a separate off season signing not an in season move.

Yes but the mid season acquisition did help put them on the radar...

Yes, and obviously DD liked them when he got them in the first place.

So, was Eovaldi a short or long term major move?

He was a success as a short term move, but the long term move is not likely to be so successful. His health history is not favorable at all ...

Yes, but any longer term signing is a gamble.

Yes, but with Eovaldi, it was obvious. Price getting hurt was an unexpected development. Did you really think Eovaldi wasn’t going to? Do you think this is his last injury? What’s the over/under for starts in his four years?

I liked the signing, but I knew there was a higher risk with him.

I still think he's a better gamble than what we thought Kimbrel would end up costing. Now, in hindsight, Kimbrel was cheaper not more expensive.

I liked Kimbrel and Keuchel over Eovaldi. But I can admit their prices then differ drastically from now

Maybe DD should learn that the prices drop.

2 years ago, he signed Moreland when other similar players went for a small fraction of what we paid him.

Last winter, he jumped on Pearce and (IMO) over payed for him.

I do think others wanted Eovaldi, so I'm not sure he paid more than others might have offered, but waiting for Keuchel or Kimbrel, in hindsight, looks like the way to have gone.

We've already spent more than all other teams and won more rings than anyone this century. It's not anti-elitism to plan a reset.

With three full months left to play , the season is certainly not over . That sounds like a carry over from the usual game thread hysteria .

Thank you.

Obviously, the advantage currently goes to the Yankees. It will be very difficult to catch them for the division. But not impossible.

Don't give up!

panic button has been pushed.

DD pushed the panic button when he made Eovaldi the new "closer" even though he isn't even off the 60 day IL yet.

So even when DD presses the panic button and has to take evasive action, he does nothing....

Yup.

The FO wouldn't look so bad if they didn't say one thing one week, then do the exact opposite thing the next week. It tends to make them look desperate. There is a sense of urgency, yes, but a FO should not be making reactionary moves.

What is going on this year makes the Sox FO approach to the 2014 season look like a well thought out, studied, Bill Belechickian answer to what you do with your team after it has won a championship.

So I am not sure if we should any longer worry about what happens when DD pushes the panic button. The question might just be what does Henry do after he pushes the button that opens the trap door under DD.
