I'll never forget Middlebrooks saying that 'he lost the fire' when playing for the pennant chasing Red Sox.

How does a youngster just starting off in the majors lose the fire? That didn't sit well with me.

Middlebrooks was a one trick pony and the rest of MLB figured out the trick...

Chavis has 50 HRs over his last 737 ABs (833 PAs) dating back to the start of 2017.

Selling out for power. Lots of swing and miss right now. We’ll see what happens when league catches up to him.

I'm not entirely sold on Chavis just yet. It's way too early to think he's the real deal, and anytime you have a guy that Ks as much as he does, there's always more doubt.

I'm riding on the wagon, though, as any Sox fan must be.

It will likely come down to his ability to adjust to the adjustments made by opposing teams.

Chavis will surely have issues the second time through the league, especially the AL East. The K rate , 17 in 55 ABs plus 11 BBs, is less than JBJr's 34 in 100 ABs with 11 BBs, and Pearce's 22 in 54 ABs and a whopping 4 walks. Since the game outcomes result from runs scored, Chavis's 13 rbi's exceed the combo of Pearce/Bradley 13 to 8. Fort a better comparison Devers has 14 rbis in 127 ABs

How is he selling out for power? He's hitting over .300, no?

I certainly have no complaints about what Chavis has done so far, he's been the top dog, since joining the team. He's also hit some massive HRs--I think our 3 longest this year.

It's the sustainability I am wondering about. I'm not projecting his decline or demise. I like his chances at putting together a very nice full season. I'm just not "entirely sold" on the thought that he will go on to have a great season. Hi K prospects seem to flame out more often than others, especially as you point out, the second or thrid time through the league.

Teams will adjust. We'll see ho he counter-adjusts. I'm very hopeful, but I have my doubts.

if nothing else, Chavis was a spark and breath of fresh air on a team that seemed lost between Ft. Myers and Naples, without a clue that the season had started. Chavis will struggle as they all have , and like Devers may well have needed more experience. In any event, they have won more with him than without him to date, so keep it up Michael. if and when he goes in the ditch, then the team has options to work with him. His flexibility between playing first and second is already a plus over the "over the hill gang" of Pearce and Pedey, who cannot get on the field despite all our good wishes.

Did you have these same concerns when nomar Was first brought up to Boston? Or bogey? Or Betts?

Isn’t baseball a game of adjustments?

When do the pitchers start making these adjustments? Because Chavis doesn't show much sign of slowing down.

He also hasn’t faced any pitcher in multiple starts yet...

That implies that teammates don't share information. The Sox have played several series since Chavis started playing regularly. One would think that pitchers on the same team would be sharing information but thus far nobody has identified any significant holes in Chavis's swing.

It may already be happening, I'm afraid. He's hitless in his last 3 games.

Cora, being the good manager that he is, dropped Chavis to the 7 spot last night to take a little pressure off.

Those guys did not have big K rates. I did have concerns, but they were minor.

Here's a good example: I think Devers will have a better offensive career than Beni, but I have a higher concern for Devers.

Not enough!! Three hitless games!! That’s only 53 shy of being Joe DiMaggio in reverse!!

I need my daughter here to yell “UNACCEPTABLE” in her Lemongrab voice. (It’s a spot on impression.)

i havent been tracking what has been beating him lately. may need further investigation.

Chavis is a big swinging guy who is gonna K a lot, hit a lot of homers and eventually have a reasonable average. I have been on record as saying his bat wont be an issue you worry about. His glove is terrible and I doubt he sticks at 2b very long. The sox have an issue on their hands in the long term. Devers and Chavis are 1b's masquerading around your lineup. My assumption is, long term, they slot into the middle of your lineup, but will do so as 1b and DH

I totally agree, but Devers may still be able to improve enough to stay at 3B, although his -8.3 UZR/150 so far this year warns he may not.

We do have the first base lot opening up next year, so maybe the two share the corner IF slots until JD is no longer around at DH.

And the worry is that Chavis may not be able to make those adjustments. There's worry that there could be LOTS of regression.

For the Sox, Chavis has the second highest k %, second highest swinging strike %, second lowest contact %, lowest ball in play %, lowest line drive % and highest infield fly ball %.

Devers is a 3b. He's got the range. Errors are overrated.

He does appear to have "plus" range and pretty good reflexes, which is more important at 3B than range), but he needs to improve his footwork and throwing accuracy. Both are skills than can be learned and improved upon.

I have not given up on him at 3B, but I've gotten close a few times. He does seem to be better defensively than Chavis based on what I have heard.

By far. Jennie is popular among Sox fan because of the size of her tits.

Then why didn’t we like Sandoval?

Whats this about Chavis being hinted as an outfield utility player. They want to keep him on the team and are looking at ways to do that. Could he play left in the future? Sounds like a long shot but why are they putting out that story now?

I can hear Sox fans now, if he crashes into the LF wall.

Seriously though, if Pedey comes back and can stay healthy, where else can we play him.

JBJ may be playing himself out of a job.

Chavis is not a good fielder anywhere, so trying to "hide him" in Fenway's LF seems like a reasonable idea, to me.

Does Martinez opt out at the end of this season? Could chavis be a future dh? His glove is terrible and instincts non existent.

Devers has to get moved to first. His defense is causing him mental anguish which is retarding his development as a hitter! Plus the pitchers are having a hard time concealing their angst every time he bungles a play.

My thought is that if you want Chavis playing , which he needs to do, then keep him at second. This team still needs a regular 2Bman, and among the other three there is no clear path to success.
