To each his own. i'm in central Florida and am loving it. The cost of very good housing where I'm is ridiculously low compared to much that compares to New England. i don't care for the crowds and I get can get to the beach in an hour if I want to go fight the crowds. lakeland is 45 minutes away if I want to take in a game. Every state in the country has its own beauty.

I too am in Florida and enjoying it during 6 months of the year, preferring the mountain area in the summer. It's a nice life and I am only 2 miles from the gulf. Blaming Rick Scott for the algae bloom is denying that argriculture is a big industry in the state. Red tide is not well understood and has been around for a long time. We get 250,000 new residents a year because it is a good place for retirees, but perhaps the growth rate will eventually kill the goose that laid the golden egg. We do have spring training games close by. It does get extremely hot at times and limits my attendance to once or twice a year.

Being a "Mainer", there are lots of things I miss about New England but very few of them are related to the time period between January and the first of May. Florida certainly is becoming more attractive to us from a dollars and cents perspective.

As a fellow Mainer, Texas is pretty inexpensive, too.

No income tax (but an 8.5% sales tax).

Housing, food and gas are cheaper here.

AC (electricity) costs can get high in the summer.

What could $2000-$2750 a month in rent get you in any of these places? That's the going rate for shoeboxes here in NYC.

You can buy a huge house with a decent sized yard for $200-250K about 20-30 minutes from downtown Houston. That's a monthly payment near your listed range.

In my area you would be able to rent a small house or a 2 bedroom condo on the beach.

If you went a little in land you would be able to rent a decent size 3 bedroom house with a pool.

hey - for $2750, it would get you the house I am living in. I would move to the locker room of the clubhouse!

Yes - Texas is another state that is becoming appealing to retirees because of its economic appeal.

I will be traveling to Texas (Austin) this summer.

I have never been, so I'm looking forward to it.

The going rate where I live is $3500 a month and may be higher on the coast. Three month rentals are required if you can find one.

Houston traffic is a nightmare, third worst in the us in my opinion. Probably worse than Atlanta (4th worse in my opinion) and fast approaching the Honolulu nightmare (2nd worse in my opinion). Ps: Los Angeles is still the absolute worst by a wide margin.

The biggest problem in Houston is that giant green cloud that the chemical companies have hung over the city. Add in the fact that cancer rates in Houston are extremely high (hence the reason md Anderson is there) and you have to ask yourself just why would anybody want to live there!

I live in the Southwest Houston area (Sugar Land). The air quality is much better here than near all the refineries and chemical plants. There is no smog here.

It takes me 20-25 minutes to get to downtown or the museums and about 30 minutes to the stadium/arena. During rush hour, that time doubles (or more), but I never travel those times.

The State of Texas is very conservative, and it overly protects businesses that pollute, build things cheaply and even discriminate, but the city areas are pretty liberal, especially Austin.

It's super cheap here. There are jobs here. The cost of living is very low. Ask yourself, why do you think many people are moving here!

It has its faults, but those New England winters are deal-breakers for me.

Everyone who I know who has moved south from The Northeast and New England never consider moving back despite any complaints about their new home states. The Northeast winters are the reason.

But is that true of the Midwest?

It gets COLD here sometimes, and I’ll take snow over cold. You can’t shovel cold...

I'll take cold over snow because you don't HAVE to shovel cold. We get some serious snowfall here.

In Maine, the winters are too long. It's like

5 months of winter

2 months of spring

3 months of summer (maybe 2 of summer and 2.5 each of spring and fall)

2 months of fall.

I grew up in Mass and later moved to upstate NY. Both had cold and snowy winters. We bought in Florida as a 6 months a year home and then sold out of NY and landed in the mountains of NC. Best of both worlds, not too hot in the summer and warm in the winters.

I’ll take snow over cold. Shovel/plow snow and you’re done. With cold, all you can do is wait. Or move.

And moving also works snow...

I can honestly say I don't spend much time outside when it's super-cold.

No cold-ball fights with the kids?

In Maine notin, the snow seems to accompany the cold - imagine that. There is no denying the beauty of the northeast in comparison to where I am at the moment but an environment that I really didn't mind that much when I was younger has become much more hostile. I do not care if I ever see another snowflake. The double t's (temperature and taxes) are driving me out of the state I love.

Went to the Yanks Spring Training game at the Cardinals facility.

Most pathetic ballpark hot dog I have ever had

Whoever worked that mustard squirter did a s***** job. You're supposed to move the dog laterally during the squirt so that you don't end up with a bunch of globs.

There is no Spring any longer in Southern NH. We go Winter, Summer, Short Fall, Winter. Somehow the State Legislature must have sold its soul to give us a short Fall to suck in the leaf season crowd. Spring is gone here.

At least you got sour krout. A better quality mustard would have been preferable and certainly a better metering of the mustard would have

enhanced it's visual appeal. I'd eat the f***ing thing.

A man who has a systematic way of putting mustard on hot dogs.

I think I love you.
