Wow. You don't even need a calculator to see that the rates of return are hefty.

I wish my house tripled in value over 5-10 years.

Lol, don't we all!

I bought my house 14 months ago for $517K, two comparable houses on my block just went on the market for around $620K. One is slightly smaller than mine and the other doesn't have a pool, which mine does. I'm hoping they sell at or near those asking prices!

Not really any examples of a team being sold shortly after purchase.

Wasn't meant to be, but do you really think these teams would not sell for a hefty profit right now?

Recent purchases:

800M SDP in 2012

615M HOU in 2011

593M TX in 2010

845M Cubs in 2009

450M ATL in 2007

I bought mine for $155 11 years ago. We just paid it off.

Houses like mine are selling for $225 now, so I'm happy, but with the interest I paid, I'm still not at a profit. (Cheaper than renting, for sure!.)

Increased property tax + increased cost to buy replacement property

Maybe sell and retire to Mexico?

An increase in property value is only a good thing if you are looking to sell and move to a lower cost region.

For sure they would. But as I stated, the huge benefit seems to be to own before the new TV contracts.

Or if someone was looking to pull some equity out of the house.

So you agree with my Mexico assertion then? If my property in MA increases 3 fold, more than likely properties where people migrate to (FL) see a similar uptick.

True. I omitted that, because i think that it is a very bad economic idea, except in certain dire economic circumstances. Also, access to equity loans have been tightened and they are supposed to be used to improve the home.

Are you saying that Florida would also experience a similar 3x price increase from relocations, or that the number of relocations to FL from MA would increase?

That as home prices have increased in MA, they have also increased similarly in FL.

One would think the prices would have higher percentage increases in places like Florida where there is a large influx of people rather than places like massachusetts that are experiencing a large exodus.

I recently read an article that the only state in the Northeast that saw more people moving in rather than leaving was Vermont if I recall correctly.

I don't think that there is an exact correlation, but would agree that FL prices would uptick, just not 3x.

BTW, Are you still considering relocating to FL?

Yes, speaking with experience here. My house has increased in value over the past few years as much as FL houses have.

That is certainly true in certain areas of FL, but I don't think values have skyrocketed statewide, but I have not studied this. It is just a general impression.

Wait until the state is 10 feet underwater after the ice caps melt.

I’m sure this will happen just like how we were told CA would sink in the ocean.

Will some parts be adversely affected? Of course! The vast majority of the state will be fine. Bigger issues are algae bloom and run off from Lake Okeechobee.

Algae bloom and the Lake run off are the bigger problems and lots of money is going into fixing those issue. The stakes for that are high and immediate.

I thought that CA was going to break off from the Continental US and become its own island.

Kicking myself for buying a property near a fault line and hoping that I'd make bank reselling my home once it became ocean view. :(

Unfortunately, big sugar is also pumping a lot of money to not fix the run off. I'd personally like to put Rick Scott on a one way ticket to the sun. When the environment is your biggest economic draw, why not take care of it?

This is why we need guys like you and 700hitter and iortiz going to those spring games! :D

One of my first impressions when I started to come to ST is that Spring Training is a money printing machine! Think about it. There are about 10.000 people at the park every day buying $35 shirts & caps, etc. with some things in the "Team Store" costing upwards of $100, $4.75 bottles of water, $9.50 beers, $4.75 pieces of pizza and $4.50 hot dogs, and the average seat is probably $40 - $50, and it's all for something the Red Sox have to do anyway... get the players ready for the regular season. Oh, and the team didn't have to pay to have the stadium built - the county did it for them!

It's all almost humorous.. in a dark sort of way. :D

I don't see him opting out. He's getting well paid, and he had to go deep into the offseason to get the contract he got. In addition, he's now two years older.

I can see the Sox offering him a 1B mitt and telling him to learn to use it. That'll make him a full-time defensive player - which he wants - without jeapordizing (sp???) his salary.

I'm surprised they haven't done that already.

IMO, JD should have started taking reps at 1B as soon as Hanley was released.

To each his own. i'm in central Florida and am loving it. The cost of very good housing where I'm is ridiculously low compared to much that compares to New England. i don't care for the crowds and I get can get to the beach in an hour if I want to go fight the crowds. lakeland is 45 minutes away if I want to take in a game. Every state in the country has its own beauty.
