Watched the video of pedrioa taking batting practice today. I was not as concerned about timing and squaring up pitches as I was how much torque he put on the knee.

Bottom line: he is not 100 percent, the step and turn are still mechanical, but light years ahead of last year.

Pedey could offer this team a big boost.

Last year, our 2B offense and defense were not very good.

Agreed. My goal this spring is to watch pedrioa and sale extra closely and see if there are red flags.

I think we all know that Pedroia's situation is on the iffy side. I'm hoping that he can return and give the Sox a viable 2nd baseman for 100 games. Only time will tell if he is able to ddo that.

The problem is, its not really MLB competition. The regulars might be out there for a few innings, but mostly the guys playing will never sniff the major leagues. Personally, I find it uninteresting.

What frightens me the most with Pedroia is that all it will take is a reaggrevation of that injury and he will likely be done for the rest of the season. I don't think that playing him for a few days and then resting him for a few days will make much difference. It is a big roll of the dice. Hope it works out but I don't think the odds are all that good.

It is really hard to get into sync at the plate unless you see pitches regularly. Not impossible, just harder.

It isn't very interesting. But it's more interesting than this.

me too.

I always want to hear the bad news as soon as possible. Can't baby the guy. If he can't play, he should retire.

I actually kind of agree with this. Resting isn't really going to amount to much. You certainly shouldn't rush him back but at some point he just needs to play and see where it takes him.

There are plenty of players who should retire based on what they have left on the field. None of them will based on what they have left on the contract...

That's the thinking behind not offering long contracts, especially to players beyond their prime. Pedroia's contract didn't make a lot of sense, even though some would say we got a bargain. To me it was a bad bargain.

Pedroia got injured (thanks Manny). I think that was the problem more so than being beyond his prime.

Maybe we should not even try to keep Betts and Benintendi and the rest of our young studs, because there's too much risk in long term contracts, right? Just let them all go and tank for a few years and let John Henry rake in the money instead.

Assuming he's done before his contract ends, I still think restructuring his deal into a lifetime services contract would give him the money he's owed and lessen or eliminate the tax budget hit.

Correct, but he isn't retired.......

hence why i put retire in quotes in my original post. he's "retired" but not retired. you can "retire" but still get paid.

But still would remain on the roster and count against the cap.

I don't think it would be allowed, otherwise there would already be cases of it being done.

From what I understand if the player retires they forfeit the contract and insurance would then not cover it.

And I agree, similar to the Arod situation with the Yanks. They still had to pay him and it count against the cap even though he was an "advisor" for the last year of his contract.

Yup, it's iffy if he wins comeback player of the year or MVP.
