Trying to make a point about the PR aspect of a Kimbrel signing for one of the Machado/Harpers losers....

Kimbrel's PR value seems to be in the crapper right now. Dombrowski has basically said goodbye, it's been nice knowing you, and a lot of Sox fans are doing the same.

And there hasn't been one substantial rumor about any team pursuing him. There has been speculation about a few teams that might be interested and that's it.

I'm starting to feel a little sorry for the guy.

On the other hand, how many JD Martinez rumors were there last off-season?

Or Dallas Keuchel? Can the same be said about him? If so, Dombrowski really jumped the gun signing Eovaldi...

JD Martinez was basically Sox fans either going 'when the hell are we going to sign him' or 'Dombrowski is being smart and waiting him out' while Harmony tried to convince us there were other teams in the mix.

Well we were also told all off-season the big players were waiting out last year’s market to reset in anticipation of this off-season’s free agent bonanza. Were the Yankees really resetting to get Adam Ottavino, DJ LaMahieu and Troy Tulowitzki?

I don’t believe there is no market for Kimbrel, but I do think his agent needs to and is waiting out the upper echelon freeagents so he can see who still has money...

There were folks on here at this time last year who said , let J.D. Martinez walk . I am sick of his haggling . Take it or leave it . People really do lack patience .

Guilty as charged. I did all that and don’t deny it...

I suspect J.D. Martinez had other offers before accepting the Red Sox offer:

:):):)

I am sure there were. But the Red Sox could win any bidding war, and they had a job opening. If another team offered $28M the Sox probably don't get him - but it is safe to infer that the offers were all relatively close. JD was always the type of guy (30 year old unathletic DH type) who could age quickly. He made tons of sense for Boston since the marginal value he could produce was so critical to them. (basically being one dimensional is not a problem when it is the one dimension separating you from a 108 win season) He might not live up to 2018 - but who cares. He has paid the deal off already.

Maybe - I think they might have had the terms semi agreed to. Eovaldi at that price is not a steal - but fair and betting on some achievable upside.

I don't think it was a agreed as you say. It looked like many teams were willing to get involved on Eovaldi, hoping he could be the steal of the class and allowing them to avoid overpaying for the older (by 2 years), better, healthier Keuchel.

And by the end of the off-season, Keuchel might be slightly older, better, healthier and cheaper and locked up for the same years or less...

We really have no way of knowing what is going on in negotiations with any of the free agents. MLB trade rumors usually doesn't get the story until it is also breaking news elsewhere . Other than that, MLB trade rumors is the go - to site for news , rumors , leaked information and speculation, but they usually are about as accurate as your average TalkSox poster .

At this point my guess is that Harper will wind up in the N.L. West , Machado goes to the Yankees, Keuchel stays in Houston and Kimbrel goes to the Phils . Probably dead wrong on all of them .

My guess...

Harper to SF

Machado to Philly

Kimbrel to ATL

Originally, I was going to say CWS, but I think he fits better with SD.

So the White Sox, who have been very adamant that they will spend this off-season, get nothing?

I think at some point they’re going to up their offer for Machado. They’ve already made several steps towards making the clubhouse a friendly environment for him by acquiring his brother-in-law and his workout partner...

I think Harper returns to Washington, Machado goes to Chicago, Philly signs both Keuchel and Kimbrel and the Giants get Adam Eaton from the Nationals...

I could see signing someone who will still be around when the youngsters mature. That won't be Keuchel.

I would say that is very possible. And the White Sox and Phillies deserve a tip of the cap for openly expressing a willingness to spend to improve their chances .

Yes, I could see it happening, after all WASH did offer Harper a massive deal. I'm thinking Philly is looking big splash, and I guess Kuechel & Kimbrel would be just that, but Machado would fit better, IMO.

If the CWS are for real on spending, Machado fits their longer term plans, so it makes sense.

harper - phillies

Machado - MFY

Keuchel - SFG

Kimbrel - Hamfighters

Ham Fighters? Lol

When I was a kid, the Globe used to have Japanese baseball box scores, often for the Ham Fighters, among other teams.

Like most people probably did, I thought that was the best name ever. I pictured their mascot as a bulky Japanese slugger like one of the members of the Gashiuse Gorillas that Bugs Bunny took on, but instead of a bat, he was wielding a large ham that looked like it came right out of an episode of the Flintstones, gripping a knobby bone for the handle. (That all my references were cartoons was a strong indication of my age.)

It wasn’t until years later - like 30 years later- that I learned the name of that team was the Fighters and they were owned by Nippon Ham.

Oh reality. How you ruin my wondrous childhood fantasies. We need more teams with names like “Ham Fighters.”

Even recently I learned there was a minor league hockey team called the Lake Erie Monsters. Now THAT is a great name and their uniform logo was awesome, depicting a lake monster breaching the surface. But even they changed their name to the Cleveland Monsters, which just sounds stupid and non-representative of Cleveland.

But anyway - zero chanceKimbrel goes to Japan. He won’t get the money he wants, but he will be in MLB...

I doubt very highly that Kimbrel returns to Boston for the sheer fact that it would put the sox over that last line again. That would only deepen the fall in terms of player development

They'll go over the limit. Just waiting to get him at their price.

I think it would have to be a real bargain, but who knows what Kimbrel's market is right now?

I’m not entirely certain Dombrowski is prioritizing 10 draft slots over a World Series...

There's got to be a tipping point where Kimbrel on a bargain deal outweighs the tax and penalties. To me, it's more about the years and the effect a longer deal might have on keeping better and younger players around.
