Seattle fans are enjoying the Mariners as the M's continue to exceed ongoing and widespread low expectations. It's almost a no-lose situation.

I give great weight to the metrics that suggest the Mariners' best days are behind them this season. Nevertheless a postseason appearance would be a welcome improvement ... and anything can happen in the postseason.

An insight into the mindset of a Mariner fan: On June 10 the M's were 17 games above .500 entering a daunting 17-game stretch that included contests against the Angels, Red Sox and Yankees before four in Baltimore to culminate a 10-game East Coast swing. I figured the Mariners would still be a respectable .500 if the M's lost all 17 games. Instead the Mariners have gone 13-7 since that date despite a disappointing 1-5 trip through Boston and New York.

Perhaps the Mariners and Red Sox will play again this year.

Or not.:)

I'm sure that if I were a Mariners fan, I'd be thrilled with what they are doing this year. It doesn't matter how you get there, as long as you get there. And like you said, anything can happen in the playoffs.

I hope that the Mariners and the Red Sox do play again this year. That will mean that your Mariners beat the Yankees in the wildcard game. ;)

Or the Red Sox beat the Astros in the Wild Card game.:)

MLB.com columnist Jim Duquette predicts the Red Sox will land Cincinnati second baseman Scooter Gennett for the modest package of shortstop prospect C.J. Chatham and a lesser pitching prospect:

The non-waiver Trade Deadline is just about a month away, meaning media and fans will be buzzing about possible wheeling and dealing for the next month. Among the names that will be bandied about, the following 10 men are some of the likeliest to receive considerable attention given where contending

I suspect Gennette would command a greater return.

I agree--the asking price will be greater. The only way this happens is if Scooter beats up his girlfriend or is caught with ten pounds of cocaine. Chatham is a decent prospect but he hasn't proven himself at the Double A level and so his trade value is somewhat limited.

To trade for Scooter G., you would probably have to start with J.Beeks or M.Shawaryn, and then add to the package from there.

I can't see the Sox getting Gennette for that package, but would be happy if they did.

I would cry for Joy .My favorite ball player that doesn't play for us .Great talent Great person and in my humble opinion the last piece to a championship lineup .The guy is having an incredible year and it's not just at his bandbox ball park he's better on the road ...Go get this guy NOW !!!! Then get a reliever. What happens to Pedey ? I hate to answer that .

As Moon has said, the only way we could pay another even modest salary and stay under the luxury tax limit would be to unload one of our existing contracts. Who would that be? As far as trade bait for a guy of Gennett's ability we would no doubt have to throw in young pitchers and other prospects. No doubt he would help us with Pedroia's health remaining questionable. Even more, it would lower the concern about a cliff looking forward.

I'm for improving the team but I suspect the real move with involve one or more relief pitchers.

I am starting to think Shawaryn might be able to actually contribute to the Red Sox, maybe as early as next year.

Really hope desperate dave does not trade him for yet another sore armed reliever!

Possible Red Sox rotation in 2020:

Sale (resign)

Rodriguez

Price

Shawaryn--has middle of the rotation potential

Beeks--has middle of the rotation potential

Other possibilities: B.Johnson, Wright (may hang around forever like T.Wakefield). I presume the Red Sox will not resign Porcello. Shawaryn and Beeks are important pieces--they will be cheap and controllable while the Red Sox pay big bucks to Price and Sale.

Don't be a moon nut hugger guys smart but the idea that Dombo won't go over is asinine for the right player ...hell Dombo has already said many times in the past week he would go over so there's that .

I have no problem trading Beeks...

Most of Jim Duquette's trade proposals are not very realistic, including the ones he made to ther teams when he was a GM. ("OK, for Victor Zambrano, I can let you have.. oh.. I don't know... Scott Kazmir sound ok?")

Also, at some point the Sox might need to hold on to a minor league SS. Bogaerts has one season left after this year and DD has already traded away at least 3 of his potential replacements...

I'd fly up from Raleigh and personally pack his belongings and help him move .Scooter would be amazing at Fenway for many years ,The mans swing is tailor made for the park .

I never said DD would not go over the max line. I actually said, if he is going to do so, why hasn't he already, and why not go way over, then?

Why should he be in a big hurry about it? It's July 4.

I meant last winter, while good, cheap free agents were signing left and right.

Well, of course, just because he said he was willing to go over the 237 million doesn't mean he's willing to go over it by a lot...

I get that, but I'm wondering why not? I thought the biggest worry was the draft penalties not the money(tax).

Plus, there were lots of low cost bargains at the end of the FA signing period that could have been signed and not put us over by much AND not cost us prospects in trade.

I'm okay with watching the budget. I don't blame Henry for not wanting to spend way too much. He's already blowing the next guy away, and that's not even counting Castillo!

My point is, if we go out and trade for a $5M (after prorated) guy, we could have just signed a $5M guy last winter and had him all year.

I would assume that it was never Plan A to go over the 237 mill, more of a last resort. Now that it's July and we're in the position we're in it seems worthwhile to do it.

Why did we trade for Pearce?

Is he an empty uniform or will he actually contribute?

He's a pretty solid bat, especially against lefties. I thought he was a good pickup.

Like we didn't know we'd be "in it" in January?

Well, when you consider the way we hit last year, I think confidence would have to put on hold.

And Pearce plays multiple positions. Great pickup.

Agree, good pick-up, pissed about the Prospect we gave up. Dombrowski is giving away our Lower Level Prospects, like they are useless. Most all of our Prospects had to be moved, for the talent we got.

Dombrowski is a slickster.
