I just can't feel confident going into the post season with these set up men, I'd hate to see a historic season go down in flames because management thought they could rely on Joe Kelly and Matt Barnes being effective for 3 straight weeks.

Dombrowski: ‘We improved our club in a lot of other different directions...We felt the other areas were more significant for us.’

There isn't a team in the league that has a totally bullet proof pen, including the Yankees, whose SP is very suspect. Sure we could have used another lockdown RP-what team couldn't? Fact is that right now we have the third best pen in the league, even with Kelly's slump. Kimbrel, Brasier, Barnes, Hembree, Velasquez.....Thornburg as of late...and even Workman has an ERA under 3. Its a very good pen and with this bullpen we have as good a chance to win the AL championship as the Yankees or the Astros.

I thought the Pirates were entering a rebuilding phase this year with the trades of Cole and McCuthen. They now trade for a closer and acquire Archer.

They are only 3.5 out of the second wild card, but there are two teams in front of them.

I guess they aren't rebuilding after all.

The Cole trade might work out for the Pirates--they got a starting 3b out of it and Musgrove has been decent. Musgrove and Moran have more years of team control than Cole.

Archer went for less than I expected but I'm not that high on A.Meadows.

Dombrowski apparently said the team thought it had a deal in place for a relief pitcher (reportedly Kelvin Herrera), but the other club changed its mind. I'm curious what this trade would have looked like.

I'm surprised we didn't grab a reliever, but it is what it is, I guess. Pearce, Eovaldi, and Kinsler makes for a pretty successful trade season, IMO. Maybe we can grab another arm in a waiver deal next month (especially if we're already over 237 regardless).

The maneuvering during the past week and through today show where the power is in MLB as the big clubs with high win rates load up off the secondary markets. Not good for competitive balance but good for fans of the AL big three (Red Sox, NYY, Astros) who will have an epic battle, including the Guardians and Mariners (?? maybe A's) to see who goes to the Series. These playoffs will be intense starting with the play-in game.

Could the Red Sox have acquired Dozier or Schoop (rather than Kinsler) or did they cost some high end prospects?

The Orioles acquired a quality SP prospect in the deal, L.Ortiz. I guess that means the Red Sox would have needed to include T.Houck.

I would rather have Kinsler and keep Houck in the system.

I'm not sure about the Dozier deal. I don't know the prospects--they don't seem to be very good.

I don’t know how DD doesnt upgrade the pen. Some of these guys are going for peanuts.

It does seem like prices have been low this year.

Maybe we'll make a waiver deal, but with the best record, any team can nix a deal.

Not hopeless but certainly improvable.

Our bullpen is solid, and may be even better with the emergence of Thornburg and Brasier. That said, I am surprised that we didn't get a reliever before the deadline. Not that I think we needed one, but I was sure Dombrowski would pick up a quality reliever.

Yeah, Devers was listed as 195 pounds a year ago... he's now 237. That's a concern, for sure, but it's the first time I heard about this weight jump, and had to double check the 237 figure.

Uh oh. Do we have a Pablo Junior on our hands?

There are still waiver wire trades that can be made in August. If I recall correctly, this is how the Astros added Verlander last year. Dombrowski will continue to assess, and he will make the necessary moves.

Maybe Eovaldi will serve in some capacity out the bullpen. Maybe Price will.

Along with body type, Devers displays a tendency to swing at too many pitches outside of the zone, and that was a calling card of Sandoval's game.

The good news: Sandoval had some good years before his career fell off the cliff. If Devers is Sandoval version 2, we might get some good years out of him before he needs to be replaced.

I think Price is going to the bullpen in October.

Sale, Porcello, E-Rod, and Eovaldi will be in the playoff rotation.

The Yankees series will be interesting to watch in this regard. If Eovaldi pitches well, and Price does not, the Red Sox will have some of the justification to keep Eovaldi in the rotation while moving Price out in October.

Also, Price has generally been a failed starter in October. He has, however, pitched well from the bullpen in October. The track record is clear.

I hope not.

I am not trying to rationalize Devers' physique. He does look a little limp out there. He may not be ripped. But his uni looks baggy and I believe that amplifies his appearance as a porker.

I saw a video of Devers being coached at 3rd the other day. He did not have his game uni on . He had on work-out clothes that seemed to reveal his body. I though he looked proportional and fit as compared to his appearance in his game uni.

He also seems to get down the line pretty well for a guy who is reported to be 6'1", 237 or whatever.

Obviously, no one wants him to gain more weight going forward.

These are just my casual observations.

We don't have any starters with a good playoff track record.

I highly doubt they're thinking about Price to the bullpen at this point. I imagine what they're hoping is for him to change the storyline.

Our division series opponent is likely the Yankees. That decision is easy to make.

There are some similarities, for sure.

The other good news is that Devers is very young and teachable, both from a baseball standpoint and a physical conditioning standpoint.

I think Devers will be fine, but it is something to keep an eye on.

He seems very coachable and willing to do what it takes. Hopefully, the team's nutritionists are on this, IF they see it as any type of a problem. It might not even be an issue, as you alluded to.
