And some people wonder what WAR is good for.

Well in this case those WAR numbers are worth absolutely nothing!

Say it again!

I think once fans get it in their heads that a certain player is a slacker, malingerer, troublemaker, or whatever the case may be, that perception is incredibly hard to shake. I never saw any of that in Hanley during his time with the Red Sox. Say what you will about his performance, but he always seemed to have a smile on his face and to be genuinely happy to be here.

I, too, wish him all the best going forward. It wouldn't particularly surprise me at all if he latched on as a 1B/DH somewhere and hit something like 15 homers with an .820 OPS the rest of the season.

I agree with the sentiment. I had nothing against Hanley personally. I just think his overall value wasn't $20M per year. Seemed like a good team guy. Hope he does well elsewhere.

Picture a fiery Hindenburg crashing into a sinking Titanic is how I'd explain those signings.

Now this is some funny s***!

Hanley staying classy by thanking redsox nation. Dude did everything Red Sox management asked of him without complaining once. He is truly someone kids should look up to and model themselves after.

Best of luck to Hanley wherever he ends up next in life.

He won me over in 2015 when he stepped in at first after the outfield debacle. He seemed like the most fired up player after a good play by any infielder. He also seem to be genuinely happy for anyone on the team when they did well. He was one of my favorites.

I'm still surprised the team jumped to this drastic of a solution so early in the season, and it wouldn't surprise me if Hanley was still capable of getting hot and going on a 2016-like run at some point, but I'm fine with the move. Definitely the best thing for the team long-term, and quite possibly in the short term as well. Hopefully Moreland can continue to produce and Swihart starts getting some more opportunities and makes the most of them. Not having to worry about the option and any related drama come August or September is a relief.

Define Drastic?

Since 17 All Star Break - 400AB .236 BA .298 OBPCT. Some would say keep him around vs LHP? 2017 he hit .179 vs lefty's in 18 1 of 6 HR vs lefty's

Hanley Ramirez "He Gone"

Posted (edited)

Good riddance. He's the seasoned pro who was thrown out going home after that big pause--with two outs, mind you--between 1b and 2b on the double to right center field. He was looking for a dinger so he wouldn't actually have to run all the way around the bases.

So I ain't buying the idea that he's actually trying out there. This is kind of an extreme move by DD because Hanley could go to another club with the Sox paying his salary, which to me confirms the notion that he was viewed as not a positive influence on the team. I am not ignoring that this move also prevents Hanley from being vested.

His cumulative WAR for four (-) seasons in Boston is +1.4. He was a really, really dumb acquisition.

I'd call the move from playing him almost every day (and mostly batting him third in the lineup, no less) to a sudden DFA a drastic one, yes - which is quite different from saying it's not justified.

Only if the collision was at the foot of Mount Vesuvius

Reportedly he as a good guy. But his play and the option were enough reasons...

That's what I find shocking.

They batted him 2nd last night. He's good enough to not demote to 9th or bench, then they DFA him.

Call me a little shock right now. It's not like they're getting a good return either. Pedroia can't stay healthy if his life depended on it.

Not necessarily if no team will sign Hanley Ramirez to the league minimum this year because of fears the 2019 option will vest.

In November 2014 Ramirez signed a contract that reportedly said a 2019 option for $22 million would vest with 1,050 plate appearances in 2017-18 (and a passed physical after the 2018 season).

I doubt the vesting option simply disappears, especially when Ramirez was on pace to vest the option.

Again, I don't know the terms of the Red Sox contract, which I hope addressed this contingency.

It does disappear

If, as Evan Drellich reports, the "Union steadfastly protects value of contracts," how can the vesting option, a negotiated benefit of value, simply disappear?

I suspect we haven't heard the last of this issue.

I’m told the Red Sox did not approach Hanley Ramirez about voiding his 2019 vesting option, which the union would have had to approve and could not have been done without compensation — if it could have been done at all. Union steadfastly protects value of contracts.

This is important: if the Red Sox wind up releasing Hanley Ramirez, his Red Sox contract — and the vesting option for 2019 — are gone. The Sox of course owe him this year's money. A new team then signs him presumably for league minimum—but that vesting option would not carry over

That's what happens with options when the conditions are not met. They disappear.

Moon come on now you wanted his head on a platter and you got it !!!

Nope.

I wasn't even close to getting to the point of suggesting HRam be DFA'd.

I thought he should be benched for a few days, start platooning vs LHPs, and if he starts hitting maybe return to his near FT role as a DH (without vesting).

That's been my position, and 18 bad games in a row did not change my mind.

Vs LHPs:

.854 HRam

.721 Moreland

.649 Devers

.529 Beni

.426 Nunez

.237 Swihart

.225 JBJ

Our team is .662 vs LHPs as a whole. getting rid of one of our best hitters vs LHPs, slump not with standing, would not have been my choice.

Now, if it keeps us from having to pay his option next year, my mind could easily be changed. I've yet to hear anything definitive about that.

Nobody can say we didn't give him a chance. He only has himself to blame.

I guess this answers my question and is why we DFA'd him.

I'm fine with the move, despite what I just wrote.

Hanley Ramirez is on pace to meet the conditions. If he signs with another team in a week he could still meet the conditions.

In November 2014 Ramirez agreed to play four seasons for the Red Sox (or their assignee). The designation for assignment may or may not prevent Ramirez from meeting that condition. Still, the Red Sox are on the hook for the balance of his 2019 salary of $22 million (less the prorated league minimum if he signs elsewhere). That Red Sox obligation did not disappear.

My point is that Ramirez should be entitled to the bargained-for benefit of the vesting option if he reaches 1,050 plate appearances in 2017-18 and passes a physical. My question is what team should be responsible for the vested option.

I'm fine with the DFA, since it cancels out the option.

I never wanted him to vest, even if he was on his way to 40 HRs.

The language of the contract he signed is what it is, right? Those specific agreed-on terms are the only thing that matters.

He will have a hard enough time finding a job in the majors for league minimum. The guy sucks. I can't picture a national league team having any interest in him. . . .

He will be quickly picked up by another team.
