Yeah I agree, Wright has been a very good pitchers since he got to Boston. But yes as we saw again last weekend going into October with the bullpen as it's been constructed is an invitation for an early exit. They need to change things, they don't have one guy any of us should trust in the 6th-8th innings of a tight playoff game. I trust Wright before most of those other guys, I don't want our playoff fate in the hands of Barnes, Kelly etc.

So last night I see a 0 next to the Red Sox score in the 5th inning and I just chuckle. They never seem to score in the early innings then they go off in the later innings. It's been remarkable and interesting to watch. Really enjoyed Brock Holt's homer last night. I love that guy.

Easy to say, "Change things."

There aren't many options, except to try demoted starters in key middle relief roles.

100 wins.

Wow!

3 straight playoff entries for the third time under Henry... third time Evaaaah!

Solid team.

Weakest areas are still better than average.

Several areas are the best of the best (RF, DH, base running and maybe even defense).

Three consecutive first place finishes for the first time in team history.

With all these 3's under Henry, it's time for a four.

4 rings sounds nice.

My issue is not middle relief, it's the set up men getting to Kimbrel. I was pimping the Wright idea for that role, then he proceeds to get into and then out of trouble again last night. LOL, not sure that's what I wanted to see. Good to see Kimbrel shut down the 9th but what was up with all the curve balls? By the way I know it's not nice to say this when he is sick and recovering but I prefer Eck to Remey.

Well, Kimbrel gets in and out of trouble half the time, so maybe Wright is still the man.

Would definitely make for interesting late innings in Oct.

I'm not sure some fans would survive it.

True, but other set-up men have been getting into trouble and not getting out of it. That's worse.

Congrats to the team for winning 100 games. Unless you're 72 and older, you've never seen it.

Poor Ynakees.

90-56 with 16 freakin' games to go. I would have taken that for the Sox at beginning of the season. 90-56 with 16 games left. Oh by the way, you're 10 games back. Just goes to show how good this season has been for the Sox.

Scary thing is both Sale and E Rod has missed several starts. Also I predicted 93-96 (max) wins. No freakin way I saw 100 win season. And it's not over yet.

LOL I do not handle late inning drama very well, much less postseason late inning drama.

Chis Sale has thrown 6 innings in the last 47 days and the #RedSox have added five games to their lead in the division.

I keep telling you guys that we didn't need Sale. ;)

David Price has an opt-out clause in his seven-year, $217MM contract following the season, but the left-hander’s recent comments to Christopher Smith of MassLive.com strongly suggest he’ll remain with the Red Sox. Asked if he would consider opting out because of his recent stretch of dominance, Price bluntly replied: “Why would I leave here to go to a team that’s not as good as this team? I came here to win.” Of course, it’s never seemed likely that the 33-year-old Price would opt out of the remaining $127MM on his deal (as explored here last week), but those comments make that outcome seem all the more certain. Over his past 128 2/3 innings (including tonight’s start), Price has a 2.94 ERA with a 137-to-27 K/BB ratio. Nearly 20 percent of the 42 runs he’s allowed in that 21-start stretch came in one outing; excluding that hiccup, he’s been a brilliant complement to Chris Sale atop the Boston rotation, creating a formidable one-two punch for rookie manager Alex Cora.

Yeah that's good news about Price, he has been great this year.

As I watched it unfold I was thinking last night may be good for the Sox come playoff time. Maybe Cora will finally understand that Joe Kelly can not be trusted late in the game.

As Price was being blunt, he might as well have added “And given my age, recent history of injury, and stretches of lackluster performance, the chances of another team giving me $124 mill over the next 4 years are about the same as the chances of me flapping my arms and flying to the moon.”

The Yankees might do it.

They will have a lot to spend over the next 2 winters.

As great as we look this year, it might be now or never time.

2 questions:

1) Assuming Price stays healthy and continues to pitch like this, would you be happier if he opted out or if he stayed?

2) Under the same assumptions, do you think the Yankees would take him this offseason for 4 years/127 mill?

I'd keep him.

At his age, recent history of fickleness and contract cost, I'd be happy with opting out.

I think the Yanks would pay him $170/6. (I'm not sure who else is out there, but the Yanks getting a top lefty is probably a high priority.)

I'd keep him, but still reserve the right to dislike him.

I like winning more than I like getting my own way.

$30M would allow us to obtain other (maybe younger and more reliable) talent.

Basically. I ate my crow last year with Pomeranz and was happier to see him succeed than to see him fail.

I always felt like there was a greater likelihood of Price opting out because he was so unhappy here, rather than because he's pitching so well.

With the way he's been pitching, he has won the fans back, so I think any of those sour feelings are gone.

1. Tough call on whether to keep him or not with the way that he's pitching right now, but I think I'd prefer that he opt out.

2. I can see the Yankees paying him more than what he would get with us. Not only to they need starting pitching, but that would also keep him away from us.

I did and still do think that is the only chance that Price opts out, but it has always been a very slim chance. And given how last year's free agent market was for spending, it's practically a negligible one...

Now Price not opting out is a mixed blessing. If he was fantastic, he probably opts out - and in a sense the deal worked out for everybody. But he has been good.

The $30M would have been nice for lots of reasons - but not a big deal ultimately. As long as this team is competitive, they'll pay for the roster. Some of their roster choices will be tricky (Bogaerts and Bradley and Sale in their own ways) but ownership has been willing to pay for a contender, and there is no reason to think that will change. (and again given the price charged to consumers - that certainly is the way it ought to be)
