Tony Watson has signed with the San Francisco Giants:

Good. I didn’t want him that much anyway. He was just a name FO floated.

Good for you guys.

Was hoping that Arizona signed him or that you would sign him to an overpriced contract. Neither happened. Bummer.

Thanks !!! The Two franchises are back on there games and this is really great for MLB .

I bet Dave offered the 5/110 all along and once he front loaded it and added the opt outs, Boras bit

Could be, but my opinion is that Dave upped the offer from $100 to $110 (somewhat of a moral victory for JD), and by doing that, along with the front loaded payouts and opt outs, was enough to get the deal done. JD has to feel like pretty good about the deal, even though it falls well short of what he expected.

you’re welcome everyone. I believe this happened today because i downloaded a bunch of springsteen after lunch and we all know he’s every baseball reporter’s favorite musician.

IMO, this is a good deal for both JD and the Sox.

It does liven up the rivalry a bit.

It was a good deal for the Sox, DD played that negotiation just in the edge, everybody is happy because he won, but, what if.....

With the touted offseasons of the Yankees and Red Sox, could the AL East represent the American League in the World Series for only the second time in nine years?

I think that it is possible that the A L East could produce one team in the World Series. it's a long season and anything can happen. It should be very interesting. It works for me - I'm looking forward to a great season from a team that at least for now looks substantially improved.

Will DD make another move to alleviate the OF/1B/DH logjam?

No question in my mind another shoe will drop ....I'm also really interested to see if Holt or Marrero are DFA tonight .

Hanley appears to be the odd man out.

Gringo ,I hope Hanley snaps back to form this year we could really use that Bat ....what if JD is playing RF and JBJ is gonzo now ?????JBJ to Cleveland for loogy reliever and Edwin ??? Blowing the cap up .Lol kidding

I don't necessarily think so. If he is healthy and hits, he plays. Moreland becomes the super first base sub in that case. Hanley gets to dh and play first. JD gets to dh and play occasionally in the outfield. I'm glad that i don't have to figure it all out but It is a great problem to have. With a healthy Price, this team isn't even close to being the same team that started off last season

On the topic of defensively limited right-handed hitters best-suited for the designated hitter slot …

J.D. Martinez is five months younger today than Hanley Ramirez was when the Red Sox signed the latter to a four-year, $88 million contract with a vesting option for a another year (that coincidentally would bring the total to $110 million over five years).

Martinez has posted 6.0 bWAR and 5.6 fWAR in 239 games over the past two seasons while Ramirez had posted 8.9 bWAR and 8.5 fWAR in 214 games in the two seasons before he signed with Boston.

In the 2014-15 offseason MLB Trade Rumors had projected Ramirez with a six-year, $132 million contract while this year MLB Trade Rumors projected Martinez with a six-year, $150 million contract.

You never know how these free agent contracts will play out.

I suggested it and Kimmi agreed on final amount, 5 years and $110M. We're good, Kimmi.

Good grief Harmony ....couldn't you wait 6 months before bringing this out ?????? My happiness just got soaked by you're rain cloud moment ...there must be a time allotted after a signing of this magnitude until rain clouds come out ....you just kicked a puppy ...like a majestic white lab puppy ....Lol kidding that's scary crap .

He could, but I don't think he does anything more than trading or DFA'ing Brentz.

Here's how I see the new set-up...

JD has only had more than 517 PAs once in his career.

Let's assume he gets 600 as a DH and back-up OF'er.

Beni slides to CF or RF when Betts and JBJ need rest. JD plays LF, whenever any OF'er needs rest.

PAs

Beni: 650

575 LF

50 CF

25 RF

JDM 600

475 DH

125 LF

HRam 425

200 DH vs RHPs

200 1B vs LHPs only

25 PH

Moreland 525

500 1B (vs RHPs only)

25 PH

(This leaves no room for Nunez to play LF or DH.)

If we trade JBJ or Beni, we could give more PAs to Nunez and maybe 50 more for HRam (still keepimg him from vesting. For argument's sake, assume we trade JBJ for a pitcher...

JDM 600

450 LF

150 DH

Beni

650 CF

Betts

700 RF

HRam 475

200 1B vs LHPs

275 DH vs RHPs

Moreland 525

450 1B

25 PH

Nunez 600

250 DH

200 2B

50 LF

50 CF

50 3B/SS

Or, something like this...

Where's Moon? I think we still have $9M before we hit the magic $40M+tax threshhold. We have enough room to pick up someone at stretch run.

This probably assures us that Hanley will not vest and will be let go after this season.

From AAV standpoint, we simply replaced Hanley with JD, and we did it year early.

I hope Hanley is pissed off that he goes off this year and force the team to play him little more without getting to 496 at bats.

HRam plays 1B vs LHPs, DH's when JD plays OF and PHs some. He does not vest.

I'll do a complete analysis when everyone is signed officially, but going by cots and the reported salaries of JD, this is where we'll be:

$208.6M including Nunez and player benefit payment

$22M for JDM

$230.6M total

The major penalty limit is $237M.

We'll want to keep a couple million for fluctuating player salaries due to call-ups and bonuses. I'd say we have about $4M to "play with."

You either vest Hanley or you trade him ,..you can't risk a rift with a brand new manager ....He vests in my opinion .I would sit Hanley down 2 months ago and tell him if he hits he plays and vests if not he will be DFA at the break ....he's not a kid he can handle this reality . I'd forgotten about Nunez.....yikes.

I think you do the right thing. Let winning baseball games dictate the player usage.

Hell it's a long season, you never know who gets hurt. You can really rest players if things work out.

Well that's right...we are sort of hoping to contend for a championship.
