I think Houck is a closer of the future, or at least setup man. Great stuff, but not deep arsenal and too little command deep into games. I know the sox have been trying to stretch him out, but he's gonna close after Kelly/Kimbrel move on

Boy, I've been looking at time time to time at Logan Allen the quiet pc. on the Kimbrel Trade. This kid has been making some good progress through the Padres System. Only 21 years old and Double AA All-Star.

Here's his stats, and a article.

Houck has also been pitching with a new set of mechanics and learning to repeat his delivery from a new release point.

All things considered, I'd give a guy like that longer lead time than the prototypical college draftee. That was the scouting on him when we drafted him. A premium arm that may be destined for the bullpen, the Sox are trying to make him a starter and that's going to be a longer process.

As far as I'm concerned he gets one full year to lay an egg and we can write it off so I'm not worried. But at some point you have to think they just put him in the pen and let him thrive. If a guy turns into a dominate set-up/man or closer, he's worth every penny you paid him in the back of the 1st round.

It was a worthwhile pick, IMO, because you have a solid floor and a shot in the dark upside he could stay in the rotation. Theyre tinkering, which is fine. Eventually the sox will need to make the expected move and push him to the pen

I can not get on board with use my a first round pick on a guy that needs to be retooled. That makes no sense to me.

I think you can if you know, as is, he should be a good reliever. Houck came out a guy who could have been tossed in a minor league closing role and be fine. Put him in the stretch, limit him to two pitches and let him throw. They are trying to stretch him out, tinker with his full windup and add in a 3rd pitch. Some guys just cannot do that

Going to Lowell game tonight, hope to see Montero Pitch. Get to see Chavis too. Casino first. 5:30 game get home to see Sox play too. Just miss some of the game.

I wonder if you will see Pedro Gomez's kid pitch?

No got to see Montero. But Bad news.

Got there game started at 7, that OK got to see batting Practice. Chavis was cranking them out, but he's still far off on his timing, for game condition Pitching. I saw Chavis last year so he's off. Probably a Month, and with All Star break, he'll be even further behind.

Now for this kid Montero, Holy Crap, this kid can Pitch. Hit 95 easily with nice easy Motion, Slider, needs work, but also has an excellent Change-up. Struck out 9 in 5.1 innings.....but now the Bad News, after he struck out his 9th batter, threw another strike, then called for Manager, they took him out, hope it just Pre Caution, but he was holding his arm. s***! Only 20 years old, and he was dealing.

Talking to some Red Sox People you can do this in Minor League games, they had High hopes for him. Signed him last year, played in DSL, and held him out so he could face some tougher competition, in this Summer League.

This stinks, hope it isn't serious, Sox lost on 2 Run HR in 10th.

One last thing, nobody stuck out to me as hitters yet, but its early. Jonathan Ortega, looked the best to me, and played good Short.

Liked the Reliever who took over for Montero, Mosqueda, nice little crafty Left Hander.

Here's today line.

I always felt his ceiling was as a major league closer. So why mess with his delivery?

Did anybody ever really think he could be a future starter?

Where are you getting this Closer thing with Houck? Here's his Bio. Never saw him a Closer in College. He started 44 games in College.

Why not a starter? They had patience with Ball, for how many years. Houck in only 1 year, and people on giving up on him already?

What's concerning about Houck, is he only walked 63 in 300 innings in College, he'll do that in 100 innings this year. Stop screwing with the kid.

The Sox did.

Yes, Dalbec had a nice game. Brandon Phillips went 2-5 for Lowell, in his first game since his signing.

Pomeranz last night 3 innings 5 hits, 1 Run, 2 BB's, 1 K. Most important 0 Home Runs. So-so night.

Rusney Castillo who made the All-Star team, went 3-3, hitting .311. He'll be 31 tomorrow.

Yes Ockimey has potential, saw the HR to Right Center, good power. Needs to make more consistent contact. The whole Portland team not very talented. Shawaryn didn't pitch bad, pretty good fast ball, had him as high as 93, just one bad inning. He's still pretty young at 23 for Double AA, so I think he will still improve. Strong 2nd half and he could be in Triple AAA next year. Chavis looked much better, last 2 at bats, hit the ball hard, no hits but solid contact.

Salem had a no-hitter for 7 innings, Darwinzon Hernandez pitched 5.2 innings 10 K's, 5 BB's, 0 hits. Pimentel let it getaway, one third of an inning, 3 hits 4 runs. Salem still won. 7-4. Dalbec is up to .249, good sign.

I'm starting to think there is more Lower level talent then were are giving credit for. IF Dombrowski don't get rid of it. Like Espinal. Trading for Pearce was good, giving away talent in the Lower Levels is not, if that's all you got. Dombrowski is slick. Espinal hit a HR yesterday.

Denyi Reyes with another good game. 6 innings, 7 hits, 1 run, 0 BB's, 8 K's, now 8-3, with a ERA of 1.91.

Last 30 days Bobby Dalbec is hitting .301, last 10 games, .432

Keep an eye on this little Lefty Reliever in Lowell, Mosqueda got his 1st save tonight.

More bad health news for Red Sox top prospects: 3B Danny Diaz, who had 6 HRs in the DSL through July 2, had surgery to repair a broken hamate today. SS Antoni Flores, who hasn’t played since mid-June, is expected back in a few weeks.

I think it might be time to admit our farm system is just cursed this year.

On a lighter note, Feltman has been promoted to Greenville.
