I like the move. Youngest manager ever for the club?

I think that may have been Klel Hobson but I'm not sure.

Who names their child Klel?

Joe Cronin was the 28-year-old player/manager of the Red Sox in 1935.

Butch Hobson was younger than Alex Cora’s current age when Hobson took the Red Sox helm in 1992.

Holy crap, wouldn't that be a coup.

He is also interviewing with the Cubs. I would think Maddon has a leg up on us in terms of getting him.

I'm very hopeful with Cora.

We've come a long way since the Yawkey era.

I'm hopeful we can land Hickey. With JF gone, our pitching staff will need a strong influence, and I'm not sure Cora is equipped for that role.

I'll be surprised if Butterfield gets replaced. He's known as a guru of infield defense and is credited with teaching Hanley to play 1B as well as working with Bogaerts on his footwork and getting into position to make throws. The Sox may want Butterfield around to work with Devers whether he ends up at 3B or 1B.

I don't think Butterfield is going anywhere either. His value as an infield field coach is well known. I would hate to see Devers tossed around from one position to another. He'll be fine at 3B. LH 3rd basemen are VERY hard to find. He's 20 years old, and quite obviously. learns quickly. He.s going to be special+ that's for sure!

Devers defense at 3rd was awful. True he is young and probably will improve defensvely, but will it be enough? There is also a liklihood that he will mature into a heavier guy and be somewhat less mobile. I am not assured by you saying he will be fine and think he may well need to be moved to 1st. I am open to either but the coaching staff needs to make the call based on actual performance.

Butterfield is reputedly a special infield coach and Cora will know his value. They may move him to 1st base coach though as some of the outs made at home could well have had something to do with his 3rd base coaching. Cora will become active soon. All the theories and discussions taking place now on the site will have little impact on what DD, JH, Cora and the staff decide to do. I'll wait, knowing what the weaknesses and needs are an see what they can come up with. Gradual improvements in a number of areas will keep us in the forefront.

The Red Sox won 93 games without much, if any, "good luck". (well the 15-3 record in extra innings ... but in terms of player production outcomes) The question is whether the lack of amazing seasons from the kids was systemic or just coincidence.

I could see Butterfield staying ... Cora has guys he might want to work with - but I think Dombrowski will drive the process (as was the case with Epstein). But it will be a strong coaching staff that Cora can (and will) delegate a lot to.

We got big over performance from Pomeranz. He filled the void as the #2 that was left vacant by Price and Porcello.

About the same as his pre-trade 2016 ... and very low in terms of innings per start for a #2

He's one of the fastest guys on the team. There's no reason to move him until mobility actually becomes an issue, which may not happen for another 5-10 years. No rush to move a big bat off of 3B.

Anyone who says they predicted this type of season from Pomeranz would be lying. Plus, he started out on Spring Training with an injection into his elbow. Most people would have predicted DL before the would have predicted the season that he had. He had good innings count at 173 for a #2. Strasburg and Kershaw had 175. Arrieta had 168. Lester 170. And there are plenty more. The innings criticism is bogus.

In retrospect, I agree with you about quality. The comps you cite are flawed. Kershaw and Strasburg both missed a number of starts. Pomeranz was better than both Lester and Arrieta, both of whom had lousy seasons.

Devers has the arm, although he needs to get more accurate for sure, to play third base at this level. His footwork did not looks so hot to me. I think that some of it has to be the transition from the minors to the majors. He is going to be a solid player for us moving ahead for sure. I don't think that anybody will rush him off the bag but you never know.

My stats are not flawed. Strasburg breaks down every season around 150 innings and has to be coddled and no one would argue that he is not a #2. Lester had a bad season, but he has always been durable and he was still the Cubbies #1/2. Pom was 19 in IP in the AL. Since there are 15. Teams, his IP count is solidly near the top of the list for #2's.

your are exactly right. zero luck involved.

Not in terms of innings pitched per start, which is what sk was talking about.

Pomeranz averaged 5.4 innings per start. In comparison, Sale averaged 6.7, Porcello 6.2, Price 6.0, Rodriguez 5.7, and Fister 5.6. Pomeranz was the lowest out of our regular starters.

Kershaw averaged 6.5 and Strasburg averaged 6.3.
