I wouldn't mind seeing us move quickly to land a Morrison or Duda type or even re-sign Moreland - someone who won't cost a ton and could split 1B/DH time with Hanley if necessary - then we can play the waiting game with Boras and JD with a bit less pressure. Guys like that are probably waiting for the bigger fish to set the market, though.

Dave listened!

dastardly deliberate Dave - ever the optimist here. Martinez comes to Boston and JBJ is packaged for a good arm. That is what I have been saying for a long time now. Not going to change until I see Martinez sign with someone else.

Yup. Hate to see JBJ go but that sounds like a viable plan.

This team does need starting pitching.

I agree for sure. i love JBJ and what he has done for Boston but signing Martinez and picking up a solid starter works for me. We have all been educated as to the fact that it is all about business. I also don't think that Martinez sucks in the outfield quite as much as some people think he does. We give up something but we gain a lot as well.

What sort of SP'er return can we get for JBJ?

What if we add scraps like Holt or Travis?

What if we add Groome or Chavis?

Unless we get something very good, I'm not seeing an overall good winter outcome, even if we get JD.

Maybe you deal with the DBacks and get the guy the Yankees had been kicking the tires on in Corbin? I am sure there will be plenty of teams willing to offer useful pitching for JBJ. JBJ alone won't net you an ace, but a serviceable back end guy should well be in reach

As an aside, I hope you guys get JD Martinez. I hope it is a humongous contract as well. But I also would love to see a return of NYY-BOS rivalry. It really started to reach high levels last year, but with the lull in competitiveness since 2009 or so with one team being good and other other not so much really cooled down the rivalry. With the sox holding off NYY by 2 games last year, the Yankees nearly making the WS and the Yankees loaded for bear after returning Tanaka and Sabathia and getting Stanton, the sox need to make their move. A sox team from 2017 plus JD Martinez would be a really solid club. I look forward to the fun

I don't hate the signing. It keeps us away from Hosmer and doesn't add much to the payroll. Next year we are going to make a splash on somebody. I hear rumours of Sox trying to find a way to trade Hanley, too.

If we sign JD, with Moreland signed up, that option won't vest.

We better not trade JBJ for a "serviceable back end guy." I'd rather not sign JD, if that's the best we can get for JBJ.

I expect a decent #3 at worst.

If we add a couple scraps, we should get a solid #3 or low #2.

I don't know the names of the guys out there who could be targeted but I cannot help but think that JBJ with a few others kicked in, that we should be able to come away with someone decent. With that being said, i still don't really want to see JBJ go anywhere and there is still a good chance that he will stay put.

Bradley I is a 3-4 fWAR with 3 arbitration years left and ranked #46 on Fangraphs trade value list, comparable tp Aaron Nola and Robbie Ray. He can get a very good pitcher in return if a match up can be found. ..

I would think that he could and we know that there are teams out there who want him.

I can't think of any Sox player mentioned more than JBJ as the object or other GM's desires.

He is wanted by many GMs. They highly value CF defense, decent power and cost control for 3 more seasons.

If Brentz is our 4th outfielder, then we now have a full boat on the offensive side of the locker room.

Now it is up to dave to get us more pitching!!!!

If you call Brentz, Leon, Marco Hernandez, Marrero and Swihart as a full boat, I'm shocked.

Our offense sucked last year. We are replacing Young with Brentz. Period.

Yes, we'll have Devers and Marco for a full season, but no Pedey for at least a half season and no Nunez.

Standing pat on offense should not have been an option.

It is now clear that if Martinez is signed , one outfielder has to go. Most likely JBJ. Personally , I don't think JBJ will bring back a pitcher that would be of much help. To get that , you might have to part with Benintendi instead. I don't see that happening. The only other possibility would be to somehow unload Hanley to make room at DH for J.D. That won't be easy to do , and even if you did , you would basically have last year's team with J.D. at DH instead of Hanley. Would that be enough of an improvement , considering what the opposition has done ?

JD replacing the 2017 HRam would be better than replacing the 2017 JBJ.

Who would you project has a better overall 2018? HRam or JBJ.

I'd pick JBJ by a landslide.

JBJ should get a very good pitcher, and if we include Travis and maybe Beeks, we could do very well.

Posted
Travis and Beeks gets you nothing. I have said before, dealing JBJ straight up will get you a guy like Corbin. Throw in Chavis or Groome, you might get something more.

You are either grossly undervaluing JBJ or grossly overvaluing Corbin.

JBJ has 3 arb years left. Corbin has one.

Corbin does not impress me at all. The YANKS can have him.

2016-2017

19-26 4.53

4.04 xFIP is okay

101 ERA- is meh

1.48 WHIP is horrible

3.31 BB/9

8.05 K/9

1.30 HR/9

I'm thinking more like JBJ & Hembree for 3 arb years of Danny Salazar.

With Moreland signed, we have above average defenders at catcher, first, second (when pedroia is healthy), center field and right field.

Left field is average

Short and third are below average.

From a defensive view, seems like we can really help our pitchers by improving th defense at short.

The current J.D. Martinez fever among Red Sox fans reminds me of the clamor for Adrian Gonzalez seven off-seasons ago.

Compare the lines for Martinez today and Gonzalez in December 2010:

AG 7 seasons, 3631 PA, .284/.368/.507/.875, OPS+ 137, 19.6 bWAR, 18.3 fWAR

JM 7 seasons, 3118 PA, .285/.342/.514/.857, OPS+ 130, 13.7 bWAR, 13.5 fWAR

Of course, Gonzalez was acquired via trade, not free agency. Martinez is about 20 months older today than Gonzalez was on the day of the trade.

It was not so long ago that we had a nice farm. Sigh...

Remember that when we had this Great Farm System the Red Sox were finishing last in their division in two consecutive years.

Neither. We just have to remember that while we're looking out for the best interest of the Boston Red Sox, Jax is looking out for the best interest of the New York Yankees.

Indeed, Adrian Gonzalez posted 6.1 fWAR in his first season in Boston (and 2.8 fWAR in 123 games before his trade to the Dodgers the following year).

The first year of J.D. Martinez's pending contract is not the concern ... it's the final years.

The Red Sox signed Gonzalez to a seven-year, $154 million extension on April 15, 2011, when Gonzalez was about a year younger than Martinez's current age. The Gonzalez extension covered his age 30-36 seasons. The Martinez contract, starting with his age 30 season in 2018, may or may not approach the Gonzalez contract in dollars and duration.

And he was playing half his games in one of the most brutal stadiums for hitters (Petco)
