Ugh, what an ugly trade that would be. They can hardly keep him motivated while playing on a top 5 MLB team.

Imagine his production playing for the worst team in baseball.

He'd be an excellent Cuban headliner in that town with pictures on every billboard and on the backs of every program.

But Mattingly and he did NOT see eye to eye in LA and certainly won't in Miami...

Amen brother! They have done terribly run sports teams in that city.

Pats fans don't necessarily see it this way.

The Giants have beaten the Pats in the Superbowl twice.

Red Sox have a need for Stanton but he has a hefty contract. Also what would be the price for the trade? It all depends. I haven't heard any noise yet of a Stanton to Sox move. I suspect we hear more news after the winter meetings in a few days.

Word is the price in prospects goes down for anyone willing to take the full contract.

Someone take all sharp objects away from Slasher, lest he live up to his handle. Larry Cook too, for that matter. :P

I hope we find out more in the days to come about the reason(s) behind our apparent lack of interest and involvement here. If Stanton was simply dead set against playing in Boston, then there's nothing you can do about that, but I don't think that's ever been reported...if, on the other hand, we stayed away because we weren't interested in his contract, then I'll be sorely disappointed.

I'm sure the asking price for Martinez is only going up, too...

I don't think this has anything to do about the money anymore, somebody's going to pay. Now it's all about the return. Cards, S.F. and now the Yanks. More teams in it, better leverage for the Marlins to up the ante on Prospects . Jeter is not stupid.

Sox don't have the leverage anymore. You would have to give too much for Stanton.

I'd stay away too. Only chance Sox had was to do it quickly before other teams got involved, in a moment of desperation to get rid of Contract, by the Marlins.

I also feel, that DD was told behind closed doors that Stanton did not want come to Boston, so not to bother to waste the time.

And that's that. Yanks are about a dozen wins better than us on paper now.

I did not want Stanton because of his cost, but I certainly didn't want him going to the Yankees either.

Don't worry though, Dombrowski has not yet begun to fight.

I am interested to see what the full terms of the deal are.

I am more interested in Return for Marlins, somebody is paying his contract. That's a given. At least next 3 years. DD could throw the kitchen sink at the Marlins, if he doesn't want to come here, it doesn't matter.

Marlins would want the Sox to get in on this better for them, especially now with the Yanks in on this. Still feel, DD was told he did not want to come here.

I don't think it's Dombrowski's fault that we didn't get Stanton. I really don't think he wanted to come here, which is even more reason not to want him.

I just hope that the Sox don't overreact now, trying to counter this move by the Yankees. Stick to the plan, whatever that might be. Don't let the Yankees moves affect your decisions.

I kept thinking the final package that landed GS was going to look light, but this is lighter than I expected.

It's a steal for the Yanks and very bad news for Boston.

We basically have to sign JD, now, and Bore-A$$ knows it.

We'll even need to do more than JD to stay even "on paper".

This adds $16 mil to or salary for 2018, this leaves us open to adding a pitcher. Our 2b will end up as Torres even though it may start off being Wade and Torreyes. We are stacked with minor leaguers and this sounds like a deal without a major investment from a prospect perspective

It may not be his fault, but his plan was to win in the next couple years and after that, hope and pray?

DD will definitely have to be creative now. Or he can do what he usually does and sign a few long term megadeals that may or may not help the immediate future but will cripple the team long term.

Welcome to Boston, JD and Carlos...

It was nothing short of a steal. Even without Castro and the money saved, it would have been a steal.

Stanton at $25M on the luxury tax budget is not a salary dump. Only low spending teams view him that way.

That's basically the only plan he can have right now to keep pace. This is what happens when you back yourself in a corner by playing all your cards in a frenzy.

[Note: I do not wish this to sound like I'm being highly critical of DD. Generally, I like the idea of creating a serious 5 or 6 year window to win a ring (2016-2020 or 2021) at the expense of the extended future. With all the wheeling and dealing DD has done, it looks like there just wasn't enough to make us very top contender on paper.]

Congrats to the Yankees. They got the premier power bat in all of baseball for Castro and a bunch of tier 2 minor leaguers.

For the record, I was never on suicide watch when it came to trading for Stanton. Same for signing Martinez, as I am scared of the frequent trips to the dl.

And I am not really interested in either royals infielder.

I am all for signing more pitching. A solid starter and two solid lefty relievers.

For first base I prefer Matt Adams, but would settle for a return of Moreland.

Its a brilliant trade. Unfortunately.

Please stop the Moreland return talk.

It's making me physically ill.

I agree, we need pitching, but without a clear clean-up hitter, we won't compete with the Yanks and Astros and Guardians.

I totally agree. Remember, not all that glitters is gold. The Yankees have taken on risk as well as GS possible capabilities.

Nice to see you taking a reasonable position. As Kimmi has said, lets wait and see what DD has in mind and can pull off. We have a good nucleus and with the right additions can compete with teams like Cleveland and the Astros. The Yankees do look scary on paper and will doubtless also try to improve their pitching. They also are taking on risk with long and expensive contracts, the very thing we were advocating against for the Sox.

It is a complete ripoff. I hope that Jeter goes broke in Miami.

Looking at what Miami got for Stanton and Gordon and it seems to be a self fulfilling acknowledgement of the old axiom “ you can not cut your way to prosperity”

Matt Adams sucks. The Braves didn't release him because he's bursting with talent...

This "trade" unfortunately reminds me of the Lakers ripoff of Pau Gasol in his prime.

It then fueled another 2 championships for the Kobe-led Lakers.

Judge and Stanton together for the next 5 years? Lord help us!
