Interesting that he could see a Bradley or Bogaerts dealt this winter and a free agent signed in their place. Also, he does not expect the Marlins to get much for Stanton without eating salary.

I've been saying I don't think it will take a whole lot to get Stanton, if we pay his whole salary.

I could even see us getting Stanton or JD Martinez plus Santana or Moose.

I could see us trading one of our younger players but no more than that. To me, JBJ is most likely and Betts not at all a possibility. We need a big bat and one of Stanton or Martinez would fulfill that but at great cost. I would like to see action taken on 1st/3rd base which neither Stanton or Martinez would fulfill. We also need second base help and probably a relief pitcher. Lots of bucks to get all that done.

There might be some merit to signing Moustakas and Cozart and then dealing Bogaerts, preferably for a starting pitcher. Doubtful it happens.

2b might be handled internally, per Yahoo sports today...

At what point does bogey go from a potential elite player to a below average fielder and average hitter.

Well, he was never above average on defense, although many expected him to improve to at least average.

His offense declined, perhaps due to playing injured.

Next year could be break-out time for Bogey.

I wonder how much Bogarets injury hampered him in 2017? If healthy, could he give this lineup a big boost?

I'm thinking it was a big issue. He started the year off very well.

I'm also thinking Mookie's decline was probably related to an injury.

We had a lot of people playing hurt last year plus many more missing time, and we still won the division. A little more luck and maybe we can all gel at the same time- like 2013.

And the $5 million buyout of the 2020 team option:

http://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/nl-west/san-francisco-giants/

Would the Giants need to pay the league minimum to offset the $5 million buyout?

I would say no.

Pablo become free agent 5 days after 2019 World Series. Giants obligation for 2019 is league minimum, which would have been paid by the Giants in full by conclusion of 2019. What service did Giants receive from Pablo for 2020?

I am guessing a lot. Hand/wrist injuries (gripping the f'ing bat!) are very hard to fix during the season. Chavis, Bryce Harper, Pedroia have all had seasons totally sunk because of injuries in that area.

Also, if you recall, just a few games after Bogaerts got hit in the hand, Farrell used him to pinch run (dubiously perhaps) and Bogaerts aggravated the injury sliding into a base.

Logan Morrison did not receive a QO. Any Sox interest?

The only players to receive QO's were:

Jake Arrieta, SP, Cubs - no interest

Lorenzo Cain, OF, Royals - sign if they trade JBJ?

Alex Cobb, SP, Rays - maybe?

Wade Davis, RP, Cubs - probably not needed

Greg Holland, RP, Rockies - no interest

Eric Hosmer, 1B, Royals - Sox might want him, but I don't

Lance Lynn, SP, Cardinals - nope

Mike Moustakas, 3B, Royals - Devers is better

Carlos Santana, 1B, Guardians - DH if they don't sign JD Martinez?

I could do Morrison. I could also see Curtis Granderson as a lefty platoon partner and juggle Travis-Ramirez-Granderson across the two positions.

For additional starters? My top choice would be to offer Sabbathia a 1-year deal

Brandon Philips would be a good choice for an extra infielder who can play 2B and 3B enough and fake SS at least as well as Nunez did.

I don't really know how much Granderson or Phillips have left. They'd have to be really cheap.

I think both would be. Granderson can't hit lefties anymore - so he'd be part of a platoon solution. I don't love it - but if we have to go with a shorter term approach, that's what I'd do.

He's 28th out of 31 in DRS since 2015.

He's 17th out of 31 in UZR/150.

He's not average.

17 out of 31 is average.

On the MLBTR fan prediction contest, I'm predicting the Sox sign Hosmer, Minor and Howie Kendrick.

Traditionally I do not do well on this contest...

Mike Moustakas, 3B, Royals - Devers is better

Devers isn't a better fielder thsn Moustakas. The idea of signing Moustakas and moving Devers to first, while probably not likely, makes more sense than signing Hosmer or Morrison.

Morrison, along with Duda and Alonso, should probably be avoided if they aren't dirt cheap. Players who have that one career year perfectly timed with free agency often immediately revert to mediocrity after cashing a few hefty pay checks...

Forget Grandson, who is 36 or 37 and pretty much done...

Duda is being projected to get $6M/1.

It's slightly below average, and DRS numbers make it certainly below average.

He isn't getting any better, which is what bothers me most:

19th out of 33 in UZR/150 from 2016-2017 and 33rd out of 33 in DRS at -21!

One shows slightly below average. One shows the worst of all. I wouldn't call that average.

[2017 alone shows17 out of 30 in UZR/150 and 29 out of 30 in DRS at -15.]
