Yuck? Harrison is a really good player. I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay the price for him (He'll cost more than rentals) but I'd love to get him.

Harrison is a good player. Not worth Devers - maybe not Groome either - though there is the variability associated with pitchers that always makes them a tad easier to be bearish about. I like Lowrie too - for many of the same reasons, though he is much more injury prone. But the idea is to get someone who can play 3B but whose bat can play in the lineup if the Sox want to call up Devers.

Rafael Devers seems unfazed by his promotion to Pawtucket, as he is now 8 for 19 with two home runs after going 1 for 4 with a two-run opposite field home run on Wednesday.

What would it take to get Devers? Groome? Chavis? Houk? Oh wait.....

1.5 Million dollars with good international scouts, the 12th pick in the draft, the 26th pick in the draft, and the 24th pick in the draft.

Harrison would be a nice upgrade at 3B and would offer depth at 2B, but he will cost way too much to be worth it.

I'm not sure Lowrie is much of an upgrade over Holt-Marrero (Devers-Lin). Smae with Nunez, Flores & Rivera.

The remaining 3B on the market (with the possible exception of Moustakas, if available) look pretty blah to me. Not sure any of them would move the needle for us much more than Devers could.

As solid as Moreland was early on, he's been sinking like a rock over the last month-plus, and I'm coming around to the idea that the biggest upside may lie in upgrading at 1B...

or you just go all-in with Travis - there might not be much power there ... but defense is fine and he has gotten on base in his short career.

I could live with this, too. Travis may never hit for a lot of power, as you mentioned, but I think his bat will be more than adequate nonetheless. While I appreciate how Moreland has tried to play through his foot injury, I wonder if placing him on the DL and giving Travis an extended tryout these last few weeks wouldn't have been a better idea.

I'd do this:

1. Demote a pitcher (Martin or Taylor).

2. Call up Travis to start vs LHPs at 1B.

3. DL Moreland or at least move him to the 7th slot.

4. If HRam can't play 1B vs RHPs, then find a cheap 1Bman in trade. (We might even wait until the waiver wire to find one, once we know moer about Moreland's injury and ability to return.)

5. Begin a Beni-Young platoon in LF (or call up Brentz to start in LF vs LHPs).

6. Stop rewarding guys for things they did 6 weeks ago and back (Moreland).

Managing day to day, looking at every data available, JF has to know who is hot and cold.

It should be all about the team. You are a paid professional. I don't care if I hurt your feelings. You hit .120 over 3 series, then you shouldn't expect to bat clean up. (Hard luck outs obviously are considered.)

There's a big difference between unlucky streak and a slump (usually chasing balls out of strike zone contributing to K's and weak contacts). If you're in a slump, I don't want you leading off.

This is what scares me, after the Doolittle and Madsen + Robertson and Kahnle Trade, nervous that DD will overpay for Reliever. I'd work the Farm next 11 days, see if kid there can do the job. Glad Workman is back.

It's too soon to tell, but Workman may just be the piece that keeps Dombrowski from feeling the need to overpay for a reliever.

Our bullpen may be in pretty good shape after all. The addition of Workman, plus hopefully Kelly is back soon, Fister, Velazquez etc...maybe even Smith?

I'd still like to have a lights out set-up man with a K rate above 10.0.

Kelly has done a great job, so far and hopefully can continue doing so when he returns, but he's not a high K reliever. We can't count on C Smith for anything.

Workman, Barnes and Hembree are nice complimentary RP'ers, but none look like solid 8th inning guys or occasional closer types.

Yup. It would still be nice to add a late inning arm, but I don't think it's worth a large overpay.

We have a deep pen, but after Kimbrel, we don't really have a great RP'er:

Kimbrel

Kelly (DL)

Smith (DL)

Thornburg (Out for season)

R Ross (DL)

Barnes

Hembree

Workman

Abad

Boyer

Scott

Taylor

Maddox

Martin

N Ramirez

Plus, maybe...

Johnson

Fister

Velazquez

Olmos

Beeks

Reliever David Phelps, in whom the Red Sox reportedly had interest, has been traded from Miami to Seattle for four minor leaguers.

I go after Neshek from the Phillies for two reasons. He could do the job in the 8th and the Rays are also interested in him. Next year we can look elsewhere.

Next year, we hope Smith & Thornburg are as far as we have to look.

This year, we could really use a bonafide set-up guy via trade.

I wasn't suggesting moving any of those guys for him. I was saying he's a good player as others were acting like he sucked, but I don't think he's a realistic option.

Power would be nice especially at 1st as we all seem convinced that it is necessary at that position.

Absent that, at least Travis seems to be able to keep the line moving.

That is a good trait, especially on this team.

I mean Travis looks like he could have 15 HR power - not 30 ... so he's not Otis Nixon out there, but I don't see a slugger in him. More like a working-class Mark Grace or something

Yup.

I have been thinking that, too.

Plus there are a couple of other "kids" on the farm who have been getting it done as well.

I say hang with them and see what sticks.

Of course you and I have the same ideas on pen construction.

If we do deplete more farm assets for a reliever can it at least be for a guy who isn't injury prone???

I personally want to see more of Austin Maddox. he looks good. I feel like we have a few guys worth longer looks and would be okay with not trading more prospects for a reliever.

The is the Sox Schrodinger's Cat. If there is a trade for a reliever in the works, we can consider the player to be injured and the cost too much to be dealt for.

4 minor leaguers isn't a high cost?

MLB Prospect Watch ranked the minor leaguers No. 6, No. 16 and No. 22 (and unranked) if the middle-of-the-road Seattle farm system. Brayan Hernandez, the top-ranked prospect, is an outfielder, the same position as the Mariners' top prospects (Kyle Lewis and Tyler O'Neill) and three Seattle rookies (Ben Gamel, Mitch Haniger and Guillermo Heredia) who until recently had posted higher 2017 fWAR than Andrew Benintendi in fewer games (despite sharing outfield duties with Jarrod Dyson and his 2.0 fWAR).

Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto has been quoted as saying he won't trade for rentals so David Phelps was a target with his team control through 2018.

Like trading Mata plus filler for Phelps. No thanks.
