I am wondering if you guys would rather be in the Yankees position or the Red Sox position? In other words, which team do you think is in better shape to get to the playoffs?

For me, it's definitely the Red Sox.

As it stands today, the Red Sox, but that could change after the TD.

Yes it could. The Yankees have the trade pieces if they decide to go for it.

Looks like a revised lineup in tonight with JBJ in the 5th hole and Beni moved back in the 7th. Travis will start as well. I think Hanley is still hurting from the hit by pitch on the knee.

Wow, I just mentioned JBJ needs to be moved up, since he now has our highest OPS this year.

Who was the guy who wanted us to trade him ASAP? I can't remember.

I've gotta think that this outfield will finally start hitting, and that somehow, we will find a third baseman. Of course, the starting pitching cannot decline at all. Oh yes, how about a new DH too. This offense is much more Met like than Boston like.

It's amazing to me that Mitch Morland is really the only scary hitter on the team, and we signed him to platoon at first. What a shocking year when it comes to putting runs on the board.

It has been a surprising year offensively, and Moreland has been better than any of us expected.

Betts has been good, but he can and should be better. Hanley needs to get his hitting act together. Seriously. I saw something about his numbers against LHP and they are pathetic.

But I agree, I think the team will start hitting better, and we will find a 3B.

Multiple people want/wanted JBJ traded.. Ill never understand it, but it'll continue to be a discussion.

JBJ is almost as high in OPS as Moreland, and since he started off so slowly, I'd say he's our "scariest" right now.

Our OF has an .803 OPS. I expected better, but that's not bad. Perhaps, the best part about our OF is that we have only used 10 PAs from people not named Betts, Beni, Bradley, or Young, and Young only has 111 PAs as an OF'er.

Highest OPS over the last 28 days (35+ PAs):

.973 JBJ

.869 Moreland

.865 Beni (Why move him way down to make way for JBJ?)

.806 Leon

.772 Bogey

.763 Betts (Not bad for a "slumping player")

.699 HRam

.649 Pedey (Getting a free pass?)

.584 Pablo

.468 Rut

.465 Vaz (uh-oh)

.258 Marrero (and people are okay with this but bash Pablo at .580+?)

His next slump, we'll see it again.

To me, I'd rather keep these players (in order) assuming their contract demands or a matching offer isn't $40M x 8 years plus.

The "Sign Em Six"

1. Sale

2. Betts

3A. Bradley

3B. Beni

5. Bogey

6. ERod

I don't think anybody is "okay" with Marrero at 3B, he's been unbelievably bad at the plate. But he's still somehow been better than Pablo because he actually plays defense, and he also doesn't have an absurd contract.

Our 3B situation is atrocious, but Marrero I guess has been the least shittiest of all the dog s*** we have.

I agree. I'd probably put Betts 1 though as I think he is one of the most valuable players in all of baseball, and he plays every day, but I wont argue against Sale, he's a stud. Rest of list I agree with.

Pablo could allow 1 hit per game and count the OPS per game and still come out better, assuming he continues having a .325 OPS advantage.

Maybe he does allow one hit (or makes an error) per game over Marrero's defense.

As bad as Marrero has been, he somehow still leads the team in WAR among our 3B options... That's how horrible all these guys have been. Pablo has somehow been the worst of the bunch, which is really impressive.

Marco and Holt are better, but some of their WAR is from other positions.

-0.1 Marco

-0.2 Holt

-0.3 Marrero

-0.5 Pablo

-0.5 Rutledge

fangraphs has this for 3B only:

0.0 T-W Lin (3 PA/11 innings))

-0.1 Marco (60 PA/72 innings

-0.1 Selsky (9 PA/3.2 innings)

-0.3 Marrero (104 PA/230 innings)

-0.5 Rutledge (118 PA/139 innings)

-0.5 Pablo (108 PA/213 innings)

WAR is also confusing because it differs on each site

http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/29212/pablo-sandoval

http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/32144/josh-rutledge

http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/33431/marco-hernandez

http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/32660/deven-marrero

But yes, they all suck and none of them are ideal options.

And by 3B options, I meant just Pablo/Rutledge/Marrero as Marco is done for year and Holt is an unknown at this point.

You have no idea what kind of character Pablo or any of the players have.

Making assumptions about their characters based off of impression is unfair.

If this is the case then maybe you are wrong in assuming Pablow is a wonderful, magnanimous, hard working teammate.

I have made no assumptions about Pablow's personality or character. Last year I may have called him lazy, a Fat f***, or a Fat Slob. I did have evidence to back my labels for him. Just because he lost 30-40 pounds does not change that.

Again, he has done nothing to justify being the starting 3rd baseman this year and certainly has done nothing to justify his BLOATED contract.

he did pretty darn well in spring training to give sox management indication that he might have been the answer....

Yes, he did. Too bad he ran into the injury bug again. Unfortunately, health is a huge concern for him going forward.

Bryce Brentz since May 23:

RBI: 35 (1st in MLB/MiLB)

OPS: 1.196 (2nd in MLB/MiLB)

SLG: .748 (3rd in MLB/MiLB)

HR: 13 (t-3rd in MLB/MiLB)

I thought he did ok last year when he was up. Was surprised no other team went after him this offseason.

in the times that I have seen him including ST, it looks like he can hit and with good power. He is being squeezed out in a numbers game, I.e roster restrictions. If rosters were 26, he might be a major leaguer. BTW, MLB needs to add a roster spot. Benches are too thin. No PHers and no flexibilty for ingame decisions.

Me too. I always saw him as a poor man's Brandon Moss. And I liked Moss.

Do you want 9 guys in a bullpen, because that's how you get 9 guys in a bullpen.

You are probably right that most teams would just add another bullpen arm. I would add another position player, so I would have more flexibility PHing for Marrero or Lin or Vasquez.

Better leave it at 25. If you add another player:

1) Games will be longer.

2) The already-challenged managers will have even more options and things to think about.

3) Fans will have more to second-guess and complain about.

1 and 2 -- I don't want to see those things happen, but 2 would expose the dumbest managers. As for 3, that is just fun. Don't suck the fun out of being a fan.

i think the players association will fight for it as it's 30 more guys on MLB payroll.

MLB can absorb the extra cost by replacing umpires with Robo-Umps.
