Tough to see Betts out of the game with a contusion. Hope that doesn't mean he will be out for an extended period as it is reported as day to day. With Pedey gimpy, Hanley out for an unknown time (not hitting anyway), Young just not a reliable option and Nunez's return still an unknown, we are short on quality right handed bats in the lineup. JF will have his hands full coming up with a threatening lineup.
Our already inconsistent and skimpy offense is falling apart physically to boot. Let's hope for the best.

Too true. And painful. Badly need Betts in Baltimore.

That would be a big loss for the team.

Yet there was a Pete Abe photo taken at the Trop Saturday of Nunez taking fielding practice at 3rd base.

We will know more when he hits the field to play.

He should be back by the end of the road trip on Sunday. Hooray? That feels like a long time from now in a tight race.

Is it too late to call up Brentz?

I know DD has said that he won't do it this year but the Sox bats are beat up.

IIRC he had to be on the 40 man roster by Sept. 1 to qualify for the playoffs, but I don't think that would preclude him from joining the team now. My question is what has he been doing since Sept. 1 since both the Sea Dogs and the Pawsox have completed their schedules.

Probably hunting.

I like that JF has Vazquez as DH tonight. He really can't trust Young to do much and his other option, Travis can be saved for use later in the game. Swihart as backup to Leon makes the move possible. Betts is in the lineup so it appears while his thumb is sore, he is fit enough to play and swing the bat. Clearly JF knows how important this and all games going forward will be and wants to give the team the best chance of winning.

I like the line-up, too. I think JF has done better recently. I'd probably have Devers higher, but I'm happy with the past few line-ups.

I don't think that Bogaerts should be playing, let alone leading off. Since July 1 his BA is .208, his OBP is .289, and his OPS is just under .600. Why start off a game with what amounts to nearly an automatic out?

Devers started off like a madman, but he has cooled off considerably after his first 20 games. He hasn't hit a home run since then, which was back on Aug 19. Since then, he's hitting .224/.283/.286/.569 in 26 games. Not trying to rag on him, but that's really pretty bad. Pitchers seem to have the book on him right now. I wouldn't move him up any higher in the line up, mostly just to keep the pressure off of him as much as possible.

I agree. I really, really don't like Bogaerts leading off.

It was reported today that the Sox are interested in bringing back Nunez and that Holt is a good candidate to be non-tendered. Not surprising, but I'm thinking that Nunez has priced himself out of a super utility role for us.

With so many players hurt, I'm fine with Bogey at 1.

Besides, last 14 days: .365 OBP.

Last 7 days: .433 (more PAs than anyone else in this sample)

We could promise him 550+ PAs. He could play half the games at 2B while Pedey DHs. The rest he could play DH, 3B, SS or LF. The problem is where's our new clean-up hitter going to play, especially if we further crowd the DH slot with Pedey and HRam already there.

If we sign Nunez and pick up a 1Bman or 3Bman (Devers to 1B), I'm not sure we can fulfill a 550+ PA promise to Nunez, unless we dump HRam.

He would get FT ABs.

Probably, but would Nunez believe it?

Let's say we sign Hosmer. (I guess we could sign Nunez first and trick him, but that's lame.)

1B Hosmer FT

DH HRam close to FT

2B Pedey FT (maybes ome DH)

3B Devers FT

SS Bogey FT

LF, CF, RF all FT

The good thing is,if w e can convince Nunez, he could get 550 PAs by rotating among 8 positions:

DH HRam sits

1B HRam plays 1B- Nunez DHs

2B Pedey sits

3B Devers sits

SS Bogey sits

LF Beni sits

CF Beni plays CF- Nunez plays LF

RF Beni plays RF- Nunez plays LF

Certainly doable, if everyone sits about every 8 days.

Come to think of it, maybe they can convince Nunez he can get 550 even after signing a FT 1Bman.

You're right.

Devers made his 12th error in his 45th game tonight so consideration of his converting to 1st next year still should be an option. I realize he is very young and should become much better but that error rate as it stands is pretty unacceptable. The problem is Nunez has his own problems.

I'm not sure I'd want that 550 in a contract though.

I might be mistaken, but didn't both of Devers' errors lead to an unearned run. Both games we lost by a run (yesterday)or went to extra innings (tonight)?

No one play causes a win or a loss, but those two didn't help.

ID o not want Nunez back, if his contract in any way hinders us from getting a big cleanup hitter this winter.

IF not, I'd much rather have Nunez than Holt.

"gritty" fouls a ball off his nose and has to leave the game. Paper. that's what he is made of.

DFA Pedroia. sign nunez.

LOL

C'mon Slasher.

Ever been punched in the nose?

Hurts like a bastid!

It's gotta be tough, trying to bat while your eyes are watering the infield.
