Wish the Sox signed Holland, guy is pitching lights out in Colorado. Saw him, high 90's 28K's to 6 walks. Something like 19saves. 0.96 Era. Guy was always a stud, had a year off, to recover, that was a good gamble. 7 million this year.

Sox are reeling. Need a winning streak.

He didn't want to come here because he wouldn't have been guaranteed a closing role.

Probably only team that offered him a closing role after having TJ surgery, and throwing in the 80's when he got hurt. He'll Opt out after this year anyway. Or if the Rockies start to falter, they will Trade him, and get good Prospects, Relievers get the best returns, nowadays. Edited by OH FOY!

I'm starting to wonder if Rick Porcello is now back to the pitcher I thought he was. Maybe 2016 was a fluke. It was the only season he gave up fewer hits than innings pitched. At least he doesn't walk too many.

I'm concerned that Porcello has not been off. Maybe 2016 was an outlier.

He was good the 2nd half of 2015.

Porcello is not as good as the 2016 model - and not as bad as the 2015 1st half version. In some ways, this is what he is (albeit a slightly below median outcome) - guy whose value comes more from inning eating than dominance. Not that he is in reality a bad pitcher - he's not ... but the value is more in churning a lot of "decent-pretty good" ... certainly in bulk more than enough to justify his contract,

You can dare, but it's just one start. :)

Ha! Very true. My #5 SP expectations are always pretty low. All Pom has to do is give the Sox the slightest chance to win, in most cases. Even if he gave us a consistent 5 Innings and 3 runs per outing for the rest of the year I'd be ecstatic. 6 Inn, 2 R? I'm a happy guy.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with your expectations coming out of the 5 hole at all. The critics want more than they are apt to get. When Pomeranz is on, he is much better than a 5.

I keep going back to Ryan Dempster in 2013. He gave us an average of ~6 innings/start and an ERA of 4.5 as our #5 pitcher and started 29 games. Most teams would kill for a guy like that as their #5.

We can argue about whether he was overpaid but I'd rather pay him what he got than have some other guy who's not as effective and possibly not won the WS.

I agree. I have just gotten tired of the haters. Pomeranz isn't the one who put this trade together. I am now watching and reading the Price critics wagging their tails too. i really think that Chris Sale gets it. He was talking about how all people have a voice now since entering the age of twitter. Maybe Pomeranz was more motivated last night. Pretty sure that he is aware of much of what has been said about him lately. His dugout confrontation was right out there as well.

I know what you mean. Sometimes I think there's too much that's publicly available to these athletes. Sports talk radio is brutal, with people calling in whose only experience in baseball is reading Dan Shaughnessy and Twitter has become a nightmare with opinions from haters.

I find that the biggest downside to internet communication is that it's difficult to determine what a person is saying without knowing the inflection or tone of voice that goes into it. Everything is taken in the way that the person reading it decides it's going to be taken, which an be entirely wrong.

I might be dangerous now with that bold thingy. lol

Well, I'm just learning how to multi-quote so I may be dangerous too! LOL

We need for E Rod to step up this year. As I've mentioned before, this year corresponds to Lester's breakout year he had as a young Sox hurler. As with most young pitchers, it's all about control and locating his pitches for E Rod.

Then we can wait patiently on Groome to arrive around 2020

Here's my post from April 7th...I'm limited to 5 articles per month or something on bostonglobe.....it sucks.

Ya. Me too, or maybe it's the Globe's new policy. I don't remember having read 5 articles this month so maybe they're going to be completely a subscription service now. Ugh. I like getting something for nothing!

You used to be able to cheat the paywall by simply opening the story in private/incognito mode, but it appears they've wised up to that. Curse them for foiling my mooching!

It is a rag of a publication. Good riddance. No one in their right mind would pay for online access.

I don't know Ted.

The Globe has an excellent rep in the industry. They don't speak your brand in politics but they have had excellent journalism over the decades.

I refuse to pay for what was free. I used to read Pete Abraham and other Sox coverage. I even looked at non Sox related content. But that was Boston.com.

That site sucks ass so badly now I don't even look at it.

I used to read many newspapers, but no more. There is plenty of content on line, so I don't read print media. I don't think that younger generations read the print media at all, and they don't pay for online content.

All of it is so goddamned biased i can't stand to read the news from any site. it makes no difference what your personal views might be. i just want the news without someone trying to shove their opinion down my throat. Same goes for television.

I'm as pessimistic as they come, and I think Price is going to be a bust this year. If he pitches at all at this rate...

He's pitching Monday.

The media has screwed themselves in terms of credibility. We now believe that they all have their own agenda, to the point that we're so cynical that we wouldn't believe Real News was credible even if we saw it.

...or maybe I'm just speaking for myself. :(
