If chavis is being moved to first, does that mean desperate dave is not going after hosmer in the offseason?

No. It means Chavis is not a good enough fielder to play 3B.

BTW, we'll need a DH by the time Chavis is ML ready.

I really like chavis as our dh/4th outfielder starting 2019.

Just in time for HRam's departure.

I was hoping Travis could replace Moreland, but I think we will need a FA for that.

Maybe Brentz can replace Young, but I've never been sold on Bryce.

So he's not desperate then?

Interesting. I suppose passing on Hosmer and giving the 1b job to Chavis would save the organization millions of dollars. I prefer the strategy of signing Hosmer and using Chavis as Ramirez's replacement in 2019.

I'm not sure about Travis' future. I don't see him hitting enough to ever be the starting 1b for the Red Sox, but he probably has a future in MLB in some capacity, perhaps as a part-time player.

Smart to move Chavis you got Devers there. I like when 3rd baseman move to 1st, when they get used to the different angles. Many times you get more range. Funny thing his Defense improved at Double AA. Only 3 errors, in almost the same amount of innings, from High A.

That's because errors aren't a great way to measure defense.

Good point, but we already have 3 DHs (HRam, Young & Nunez).

I understand that. I should have been a little clearer. I'm not advocating any move up for Chavis. I would just hate to see a compact, rugged individual who can actually hit the ball hard be traded. My other point would be that I think it is kind of obvious that the age of these prospects gets too much attention by some who post here. If we have players who are over performing at the minor league level and there is room for them up here and they aren't teenagers, they are old enough to get a shot.

Do people really want Homer, who is only good every other year?

Eric H osmer (ages 25-27) - 116 OPS+, 5.4 fWAR (and counting)

Player X (ages 25-27) - 116 OPS+, 7.5fWAR

I won't name him outright, but the identity of Player X rhymes with Sablo Pandoval.

Obviously this doesn't mean both will have equal outcomes, but Hosmer might not be the player people thi nmi he is. Travis might be a flat out better option

If the Sox do opt for a free agent, hopefully they investigate the slightly older, slightly better and likely cheaper (or at least shorter term) option in Carlos Santana. ...

Yeah, I didn't take your post that way, and I know you didn't mean this year.

With Moreland and Young leaving this year and HRam after next, there is plenty of room for Chavis to play 1B or DH on this team in 2019. (He might even be called up in 2018.)

Who can disagree with that?

If they are ready and able to contribute ( and a roster spot or need exists ) bring them up.

I'm not as big a Hosmer fan as some here, but his "off year" in 2016 still saw him hit 25 HRs and put up a .761 OPS.

Pablo was in steady decline when we signed him.

Hosmer:

2015: .822

2016: .761 (25 HRs and 104 RBI)

2017: .878

He's not the prototypical 1Bman with just 19 HRs and 35 2B+3B per 162 games,

and he only plays about average defense, but he'd be a step up from Moreland.

I do think there might be better choices out there, and maybe a trade would work better than a signing, but something will be done this winter.

If he continues to hit, I would hope that they would call him up. He doesn't meet the height requirement at 5'10 but at 210+, he probably would do. lol

Seems to me like chavis would be better served learning to play left field.

Chavis would be better served as trade bait.

The Sox hopefully won't have any outfield openings for a few years. However, they probably will have needs at other positions....

I don't think we see Chavis until 2018, mid year to end of year. If he continues to stay hot this season and has a great spring, perhaps he could break camp with Boston. But who knows.

We will need a 1B/DH next year and another one after HRam bolts.

i hope not. i don't want them to give up anyone who really looks as though they might have power.

With young out of here at season's end, we have an opening for a fourth outfielder/dh. Seems chavis would fill that role nicely.

He doesn't play OF yet.

Yes, hard to project "nicely" on someone who's never played the OF.

DH: maybe.

1B: maybe more likely than LF, but still a maybe.

A lot will depend on HRam's ability to play 1B next year without greatly increasing his odd of getting hurt.

It would be great, if all our prospects step up quickly and forcefully.

Devers takes over for Pablo & Co.

Chavis and Travis take over for Moreland (1B) and Young's DH role.

Maybe Brentz or Barfield takes over for Young's 4th OF'er role. (Holt could as well.)

My guess is, we sign a big bat to play 1B (one year deal?) and delay any need to call-up Chavis.

I don't follow the minors as closely as some of you, but I have read that we should should sell high on Chavis.

So the Panda gets the call and will be batting 4th for the Giants. Normally I would be pulling for a guy like that, but as far as I'm concerned, I hope they ship his ass out after 10 games. He was one of the biggest flops I have ever seen here and the fact that he was so out of shape when he first got here was a joke. He's a joke. I would be a fool if I didn't expect him to do some type of damage with the Giants, but not sure how long he will be able to sustain. Just ******** he puts 50 mill. in his pocket and has a chance to double down if he does anything with the Giants. I have no respect for that Panda f......
