How did Schilling do in his first home start for us? See if you can answer without looking it up. ;)

Curt is like 78-1 in postseason with a -1.76 ERA. he gets a pass on his first home start. he has proven he can handle the pressure.

let me know when price or kimbrel have a "bloody sock" game in yankees stadium in one of the most high leverage pressure packed games you can be in.

i get it. you dont think April 11, 2016 was a game that price and/or kimbrel were trying to prove something. i do.

Nope, 6 IP/1 ER/ 7 K

I don't know how you guys do this. I can't even remember what I had for breakfast and it's no where near lunch time yet! :)

But I think that may have proved Slash's point - that when a player does what we expect him to do we tend to forget it, but when he stinks the place up we have longer memories.

HFX...my point was that a newly brought in high priced highest paid pitcher's first home start is the pressure start. if you dont agree that's fine.

Not to mention, for a guy who pitched most of his career in Tampa, a home opener at Fenway would feel like postseason atmosphere.

Yeah, every time you think they're a good team, they start to suck. That's why they're never going to make it into the playoffs. I mean, maybe they make the WC game, but it'll be one and done. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire team collapses onto the field in the middle of the game and then disintegrates into a fine crystalline powder and is carried away on the wind. This team is hopeless.

Seriously, do you even realize how ridiculous you sound right now? The Sox just clinched the division after two years of non-competitiveness and all you can do is point at a blown save by a guy who has only blown two other saves this season and the loss of a couple games with nothing but the "meh"-tastic goal of homefield advantage on the line as a reason to basically give up on the team?

I agree with you.

Technically it wasn't even a blown save by Kimbrell last night, but that is splitting hairs of course. I chalk this one up more to the rain then pressure. He's only had one other game this year when he walked that many batters (also against NYY).

The score was 3-0. How is that not a save situation?

No, it wasn't a blown save. Kimbrel gets credit for the loss.

My issue with Kimbrel isn't the number of walks he's issued, it's something that doesn't show up in the box score - the number of 3-ball counts he's worked himself into. Sooner or later that lack of control comes back to bite you on the ass, and it did last night. The thing that really concerns me is that it could again at any moment.

I'd like to make Koji the closer but I don't want Kimbrel walking people in the 8th inning either!

Blowing a division clinching game in Yakee statium is no big deal.

What makes you think a Home Opener would be?

He still had the lead when he left the game. Trust me, I know it doesn't make what he did any better. However, even though he's had some wild appearances, this one was atypical. He wasn't even close on 90% of his pitches.

A game like last proves why holds are stupid.

He's NEVER close on 90% of his pitches! That's why he goes to so many 3-ball counts.

I'll give you that his last 2-3 outings have been solid, but that's what scares me. We never know which Craig Kimbrel is going to show up.

I honestly haven't watched his outings that closely so I'll take your word on that. I just know I almost threw my beer bottle at the tv about 5 times in the 9th inning and assumed he isn't usually that far off.

yeah...i messed that up too. kimbrel gets the L but kelly gets the blown save because he was the one that gave up the gopher ball.

maybe one of the yankees players can take him for a plane ride today?

sorry...a terrible joke but i am in a terrible mood.....

a game like this could cost us homefield advantage.

The funny part in all of this, is Farrell had said this week don't be surprised , if Kimbrel is used to get key outs in the 7 th inning. He might not be the striaght closer in the playoffs. I'm dead serious. It was in the Boston Herald this week. I was thinking it was stupid to even think about something like that. The problem now it could be debatable. He had a bad night. Let's hope that's all it was.

They do have Ziegler and Koji to close. IMO I would let Kimbrel close.

If Farrell wants to do that, he should try it out in the regular season to see how it goes first.

Nope. That was his first game, but not his all-important first home game. His first home game was 8 IP/4 ER, for a horrible 4.50 ERA, and a no-decision. He didn't step up in that vital contest. I'm surprised nobody remembers. ;)

Kimbrel throws a lot of pitches out of the zone that are swung at. If I were an opposing ML manager I'd tell my players, "If you're going to face Craig Kimbrel, take two pitches and then see where you are. If he's throwing strikes you're probably not going to be able to hit him anyway, and if he's not throwing strikes your chances of getting a BB are somewhere north of 50/50."
I agree. I would especially do that with bottom of the order guys.

So, for the unacquainted, Smiley-Beni was a legendary poster, some would say troll, on the former boston.com Red Sox chatboard. In his heyday, Smiley would post incessantly, baiting Yankee fans and drawing them like flies to flypaper on his daily threads that were bumped up to the top of the front burner with virulent pinstriper counterattacks. Smiley was almost always on the offensive and would taunt even when the Yankees had the upper-hand in the rivalry, resorting to playing up the big money budget advantage or the A-Roid steroid card.

Such is Smiley's legacy, that in his honor, I've named an annual baseball holiday after him called Smiley-Beni Day. Smiley-Beni Day is celebrated on the day after the New York Yankees are officially eliminated from contention, whether in the regular or postseason, even if this occurs after the 7th game of a World Series. The only season it was not celebrated since its inception was in 2009 when a day of mourning was declared. You might wonder, "Well what's to celebrate in seasons like 2011 and 2012 with disgraced Red Sox teams and division leading Yankee teams?" Folks, Smiley-Beni Day is a not a celebration of Red Sox success or accomplishments. It's all about schadenfreude or spite. In disappointing Red Sox seasons, it is desperate attempt to salvage some slight measure of joy, however pathetic this might seem.

So, in the spirit of Smiley-Beni, please join me in hoisting virtual banners and raising the bunting. Let's welcome the adorned horses, uniformed marching bands and minstrels to celebrate this glorious occasion. Let the fireworks begin!

Hehehe .... well done, sherrif! Well done!

I lift a cup of apple cider to Benny!

And this season, the elimination of the Yanquis is as sweet if not sweeter than any or most, since - ahem, mentioning the obvious, - the Sox are ALE division winners!

Even the pleasure that Bomber fans may have had in the sweep last night came on the heels of Farrell signing off on them and using Owens on the mound and several AAA or sub players in the line up. Taking Papi out of the line up so early was also a sign they didn't care one snot if we won or not. (I DO ... I always want to beat the EE.)

After 2 dismal seasons we find our Beloved Red Sox back in the Postseason.

It takes 11 wins to have the Parade.

Get the duckboats washed, waxed, and gassed up.

WE CAN DO THIS!

Matchups still TBD and i will update this post once schedule is set.

Ideally we can finish with the first or second best record so at minimum we are Home Team for the ALDS.
