No one is saying this is the staff that should go to the playoff, so the "can't win in the psotseason" is stupid.

What people are trying to point out is that DD doesn't need to make a deal tomrrow.

I swear some people misread s*** on purpose....

It wasn't meant to try to "make our staff look better", but I did make this point, because I do not think it's as bad as some think it is.

I have maintained for a long time, that our biggest weakness is our rotation, and I still feel this way.

Another view...

Who stared in our worst 7 games, in terms of runs allowed:

13 Kelly (2.1/ 7 ER -Buchholz got the loss)

12 Porcello (6.o/5 ER- Kimbrel got the loss)

12 Price (3.2/ 8 ER- Cuevas got the loss)

10 Porcello (6.2/4 ER - Ross got the loss)

9 O'Sullivan (4.1/ 5 ER- Hembree got the win)

9 Buchholz (5.0/ 5 ER)

9 Price (5.0/ 5 ER- Kimbrel got the loss)

What's interesting to me is that 5 of the 7 worst games were not from our 5th starter. The strangest fact might be that in 6 of the 7 worst games by our staff, the starter did not get the decision, so even in those 6 of those games, our offense kept us in the game.

It's interesting to me that in 2 of the 7 the starter went 6 or more innings and gave up less than half of the runs.

Shields' Chicago debut:

"The boos started after Shields walked the second batter of the game en route to a four-run first inning, intensified after each of the three home runs he allowed — three in four batters — and reached a crescendo when he was yanked after allowing a single to the leadoff batter in the third inning. Struggling with his fastball command, Shields was charged with seven runs on eight hits."

Damn! We could've had him!

Yeah, that's definitely getting off on the wrong foot.

I am looking forward to clay getting another shot as a starter later this month. He will be ace like.

I don't know if you are being sarcastic or not but I will ask does anyone not expect Buck to be back in the rotation at some point this season?

i am not being sarcastic here. i love his stuff and believe he will pitch well when given another shot later this month.

Yup, the Sox don't really have a choice. Buchh will get another shot at starting.

He'll be back and probably marginally better than what he has been so far. However, this is one spot in the rotation that could be easily upgraded.

Doesn't look like anyone will be trading for Rich Hill any time soon.

Not really a big surprise there. He has always struggle to remain healthy.

I made a friendly bet with one of the BDC posters last year about Hill not getting past 10 starts this year. Looks like I was wrong....he got to 11.

What's the extent of Hill's injury?

still not released.

this is the latest info i could find:

Oakland Athletics starter Rich Hill suffered a setback in his recovery from a groin strain and may require a stint on the disabled list, per multiple reporters via MLB Trade Rumors. During a bullpen session, Hill said he felt a pull on the 33rd pitch of the session and he’ll now head back to Oakland to undergo an MRI.

Hill hasn’t pitched since May 29, which MLBTR notes is when the A’s could backdate his DL stint to, but the severity of the strain is still unknown.

I used to joke about it, but I'm seriously wondering if they could convince Wakefield to come back. If anyone can make a comeback at that age, it's a knuckleballer. Or Jamie Moyer.

Bring that one up to the catchers. My guess is after you present it to Messrs. Hanigan, Leon and Vazquez, the site would be looking for a new moderator.

Yes, all I've heard is just what Slash is posting. I felt like I was almost rooting against Hill last year when we had this conversation; I was actually hoping the best for him. I was just very against signing him for starters money given the injury risk he had. I would have been very happy with signing him as a depth option or having a depth option to replace him at the right price but he just seemed way to risky for me.

It's really just simple math, you have to work through it. Guys can only increase their workload so much from year to year and not only was Hill someone who has barely ever pitched a full season he has not done it in almost a decade. Given a chance to start 5th day on a mlb rotation it was about as close as you can get to a sure thing he would get injured at some point.

For his sake, I hope this is minor and he can still finish the season strong.

Hill to the DL with his "groin strain", but those aren't usually so bad to the point where you need to wait so long to be able to take an MRI (though I'd defer to Jacko on this subject). Next thing you know, the words "sports hernia" may be bandied about and it's buh-bye until at least August.

That seemed a bit odd to me too, simple groin strains don't normally necessitate MRI's. I would think for a sports hernia they would do an ultra-sound. MRIs are more expensive than ultra-sounds and I think CT scans too so they are usually a latter used tool for diagnostics. If he's getting an MRI, then they are likely worried about something more serious.

NOTE: I'm not expert, so take everything I said with a grain of salt.

Fortunately we have a real MD on Talksox. Jacksonianmarch know his s*** when it comes to sports medicine and baseball related injuries.

It will be interesting to hear what he has to say.

Hill on the DL is still better than Buchholz healthy.

Well that's effectively like saying Owens/Kelly > Buchholz. And right now...thats...err..umm...pick your poison dude.

Your offense has to be a big powerhouse to get to the playoffs with an ERA over 4.

Well, our offense kind of is a big powerhouse, at least to this point.
