Yeah, so we had a bad turn through the rotation guys, it happens, and against 2 good offenses no less. It takes more than that to declare a rotation "exposed." tone down the melodrama a bit.

Personally im thrilled they didnt waste prospects on Shields...I think if DD does get pitching it will be a bigger deal if one arises...also DD isnt known for early trades during the season. He will wait until closer to the deadline when some teams have decided to wave the white flag, or maybe an injury will cause a team to have a need...swihart and Travis injuries certainly hurt seeing they were two names that would have been perfect in a trade...

I believe this as well. He is not stupid enough to try to temporarily plug the leak by giving up future players for possibly future has beens. I'm guessing that when he deals, he will deal big. Moving Swihart to left was an experiment they could afford to try because they had plenty of hitting in general. Maybe it would have worked long term maybe not. Maybe it still will. Young was and still is the better option in left field at present. It is still possible that the feeling was that Swihart was never going to be the catcher that he was projected to be long term. Whatever, i don't think he is going anywhere now. Hope he heals and develops.

This rotation is not good enough. That is no melodrama. The offense is not going to regularly put up double digits, and this is a bottom half pitching staff. DD had better get some reinforcements.

Edit: Now is the time to be facing Toronto. Their lineup is in a collective slump, and Tulo is down with an injury. Their offense is only going to get better. Over the Hill, CC had a quality start against them this week giving up only 2 runs.

We are 21st overall for ERA in the majors and 12th out of 15 in the AL. I don't think it's melodrama to say we have issues.

It's good enough for a flawed WC contender. It's not good enough to have a long run in October.

It's good enough for a team one year removed from finishing in the basement. It's gonna take more than 1 year to build a rotation from nothing.

Wake Up with Wilbur made an interesting case that the Red Sox should have gone after Shields, particularly given the fact that the Padres ate a lot of his salary in the deal with the White Sox.

There are certainly a lot of pro's & con's as to what Shields may or may not have left in the tank. But the question still remains as to whether Shields would be better than what the Red Sox have available presently in the way of starting pitchers who can be rolled out and consistently pitch effectively every fifth day.

Couple of things.

Tulo has been terrible since the Blue Birds aquired him, not much to miss.

Secondly, Over the Hill Sabathia is sporting a sub 2.60 ERA.

A shattering stroke incoming for YOTN in 5...4...3...2...

Well, YOTN hasn't really asked for the new posters to do too much.

You would think they'd take a moment and abide by one of his few requests instead of starting a new thread every time a new thought pops in their head.

Hence my worrying about his health. I do hope he's bald otherwise it will have been an ever painful experience, these past couple of months.

Over the Hill Sabathia is over the hill. I wouldn't expect much from him if I were you, unless your bar is somewhere around a prolonged DL stint and an alcohol relapse.

You can take the posters out of BDC, but it's sheer hell getting BDC out of some of the posters.

I used to hate when there were 27 Manny threads on the front burner all saying the same thing.

The mods were terrible there.

He's doing better than your $31M dollar man.

We play in a hitter's park.

I'm not trying to say our pitching is fine as is, because I think it needs a serious upgrade, but it's not as bad as ERA shows it is:

17th ERA- at 101

15th WHIP at 1.31

14th in SIERA at 4.07

Now, if we breakdown our SP'er numbers:

18th ERA- at 108

15th in WHIP at 1.34

19th in SIERA at 4.38

Bad, but still not bottom third in MLB.

I went through the rosters of all the teams that look like they may be serious sellers this July, and I couldn't find anyone I felt would be the type of guy we need AND who could realistically get without giving up too much of our future.

I hope we don't settle on a band-aid pitcher for a very good prospect or two.

Elias pitched a complete game for the Pawsox last night, and in his last 4 outings, he has pitched fairly well.

It looks like he is trying to claim that 5th spot.

You are absolutely right. My bad. I realized my faux pas just a few minutes after I clicked to post it. But I could not figure out how to transfer it to the already existing thread. Please except my apology for causing you this discomfort.

YOTN will fix it. But that's really the point, to try to lighten his workload. Not such a big deal though considering how much Shields is discussed on this forum one way or another.

I am not sure but he has like 28 strike outs in his last 3 starts or something absurd.

I'd like to see him start on June 18. I am assuming that he can't do much worse than Owens.

Yeah, I don't remember his exact numbers either, but I believe his ERA is 2.38 (or thereabout) over the last 4 starts. Not a large sample, but he's certainly worth a look with the way the other guys have been pitching.
