You can make the same argument about a blockbuster trade for a guy like Sale. That could blow up in your face the same way. The only difference is that your losses are in talent, not dollars.

True. Just look at our near miss with Johan Santana. the thing I like about Sale and ai actually like Quintana more, is the age and cost over many years of team control.

You are right though about risk. A

Media talking about Betts plus prospects for Sale. If Dombrowski makes tgis move, I'm out on him.

Would anyone on here want this deal made?

@thechichronicle Re: Chris Sale Trade:

“Any deal with Boston starts with Betts and Benintendi with 3-4 more prospects added below them." (Per @barstoolWSD).

Hhahahahahahajajajajajhahahaha... Hoo boy... Good one.

Depends on betts knee. He's only 23 but if he has knees of a 40 year old he won't last in this league for long and I would trade him for Sale. If it's just an odd injury with no lasting repercussions there is no way on earth I trade him.....

THere should be no touching Betts, Bradley, xander, Benintendi, or Moncada. Period. At this point though, I don't even want Sale. I'm a big believer in chemistry and Sale makes me very nervous. I don't want locker room cancers anywhere near this team.

I like Quintana and Robertson... but not for any of the aforementioned guys. I don't even care if we were to win the WS this year, I don't want to trade our future and farm. Not worth it.

I don't think I'd do Betts for Sale straight up , to say nothing of Beni + others.

The more I think about it, the more I hope we're done dealing, other than maybe another bullpen arm if one can be had at reasonable cost.

I'm against taking a step back and two step forwards approach, when two steps forward is not guranteed. No way I'd trade Betts.

I know that Moon battled with many posters about Mookie batting lead off but he's been proven right. Although I can see him hitting 3rd at some point.

While I am willing to trade prospects for Sale, I am never in favor of trading an every day player who is a star for any pitcher. Never.

Let's say we have to play into the one game win and your in game... who do we start as of right now? Price or Porcello?

I'd say right now we put Porcello in there. Hopefully Price gets his s*** together. I know some will say maybe Wright as an option as well, but I honestly hate to rely on a knuckleballer to get us into the playoffs.

I think that's why DD is pushing so hard for another ace type starter. I'd like to add someone like Edison Volquez he's a free agent at the end of the year and won't cost any big name prospects.

And if Sale or anyone else of ace caliber is able to be had it will be in the offseason. I'd rather trade Moncada than Betts for an ace pitcher. The killer B's need to be locked up long-term.

I'd say let's just hope Price can turn it around and Erod Porcello Pomeranz & Wright can hold it together... Bucholtz will probably slip in the shower and hit the DL before the deadline I'm just waiting.

If they want Betts Benni AND 3-4 more, they can GFT!

NO pitcher is worth that. GMs are out of their mind. First Atl was thinking close to the same for Tehran, and now all that for Sale...no friggin way. Not worth it. NOT.AT.ALL.

Yeah, anything involving Mookie should be a non-starter...he's a superstar in his own right at this point and probably worth more than Sale by himself.

Betts

controlled through 2020

2015 bWAR: 6.0

2016 bWAR: 4.8

Sale

controlled through 2019

2015 bWAR: 3.3

2016 bWAR: 3.2

without a doubt. unless he has fragile knees. did we ever find out exactly why he has missed the past few games?

am i the only one worried about a 23 year old having "sore" knee(s)?

An MRI showed some swelling and fluid in his knee, but no structural damage. He's expected to be back tonight.

thanks FJ. my firewall is blocking the link. can you answer on what was the cause of the swelling and the fluid? did he bang it on something? or is this something caused by "overuse"? i do NOT want to think of betts as a delicate flower but a random knee swelling and suddenly i am starting to think jacoby......

Good point. If he starts missing more games after this, then I'll worry.

If the White Sox say, "That's a good package of players, you can have one of Chris Sale or Jose Quintana", who do you choose? Quintana looks like a budding star to me.

Mookie has had virtually no off days this season until the past couple of games. I think his knee injury is just normal wear and tear of a grueling season. All of the players are beat up in one way or another by this point of the season. I don't think it's anything to be overly concerned about.

OK. i am 100% on board with this and will hold off on the "fragile" talk.

Lifted from that link:

Betts said he's been dealing with the issue the "last couple of days" and that he felt it Friday after throwing Minnesota Twins second baseman Brian Dozier out at second in the top of the fourth inning.

Betts was removed from Friday's game for precautionary reasons before the top of the fifth and was replaced by Michael Martinez.

"[i feel] pretty good today," Betts said. "Have to go for the treatment, make sure everything is clear before I get back out there."

Betts said the treatment has mainly consisted of icing his knee in order to get the swelling down.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said that Betts might need a couple of days to return, but "everything points to this being a short-term situation."

I'm not a doctor or anything, but I haven't seen anything here to indicate this is a major concern or a potential long-term issue.

Anyone worried about character issues with Sale? Or you think he just hates playing for the ChiSox?

I'm not much into trying to psychoanalyze players based on media reports, but Sale does seem rather...combustible, shall we say. It's mainly the obscene cost that would keep me away, though.

i think it's just immaturity. maybe if he ends up on the Sox the veterans on the team school him real quick on proper behavior?

The thing about selling the farm to get a package like Sale/Robertson is that even with an acquisition like that, nothing is guaranteed. Then you have also jeopardized the team for several years down the road.

The comments I've been reading from Dombrowski lead me to believe that he will not trade for a rental. He is all in for this year, but he wants pieces that will help the team win for the next 2-3 years as well.
