Hasn't Brentz finally proven he's DFA worthy?

I'm fine with a DFA or Coyle instead. I guess maybe Noe Ramirez is a choice as well.

Sorry but Brentz is still breathing.

Brentz has been surprisingly useful.

I'm convinced his only chance to stick around is if he hits well enough to be a DH.

What happens if Shaw is out for extended period? Who comes up?

See any scenario of Benintendi getting a call? Holt plays 3rd, Hernandez a backup. Brentz and Benintendi platoon in LF?

Can Benintendi do any worse than some of the pitchers we've trotted out? Benintendi won't lose a game by himself. Yet this board is okay with continuous unsuccessful tryouts for #4 and #5 spots?

No one is or has suggested that he is the answer to the left field situation but for the present he deserves to be out there as much as anybody else after Holt.

No. Hernandez to 3rd, Holt in Left.

They can be subbed by Brentz in Left, and Merrero at 3rd.

If that is the case what is the baseline of offensive performance that you require for him to be DH? And why, after all, is Brentz on your s*** list? I know that he shot himself in the leg. What else?

He looks serviceable to me.

I've always liked Brentz as a player. He's a Brandon Moss-type player. He's not going to replace Mookie or JBJ but he could be serviceable as a 3rd or 4th OF on this team.

I agree Brentz should be serviceable depth, if nothing else. I was surprised he wasn't DFA'd before now to open a spot on the roster, but it looks like we will need him for a little while - particularly if Shaw is going to be out any length of time.

At 27 years old Brentz has spent the past 5 seasons in AAA. In that time he's accumulated a line of .251/.315/.439 with what equates to about 15 HR a season pop. No speed and average defense on the corner. and a 25% K rate.

He's a nice guy to have around for depth, but I'd rather see elite defense, speed and better contact ability with more versatility from a 4th outfielder.

I'm very happy he's done well so far however, he got hot at the right time when this team needed it the most.

he hasnt done anything yet that i thought to myself "he doesnt belong"......

Not yet, but I highly doubt 8 games this year. Last time he was given this many MLB at bats he put up a .692 OPS. I'm happy he's performing well, but it is insanely more likely he's the guy we've seen the past 7 years than the guy we've seen the past 8 games. He's currently the 35th ranked prospect which means he could as easily be ranked 60th or not at all.

Shaw has outperformed his AAA numbers?

I have heard that Holt was dizzy following Tuesdays game and sat out last night. Is Holt over his concussion enough to be a regular player at this point? If not, what do the Sox do going forward. The Sox apparently want a right handed batter in the lineup for balance, hence they called up Brentz not Benintendi. If Shaw's foot is injured and he winds up on the DL then Holt would have to fill in there with the hope that he can go most days. Calling up Benintendi is still reasonable if Shaww is on the DL since we need another solid outfielder as backup.

Shaw has also come back down to earth, lets see what he does for the rest of the season.

Also, people like Shaw outperforming their minor league numbers is easily the exception and not the norm.

Arguing the exception and not the norm from a 8 game sample size is nothing more than wishful thinking.

I'm not saying Brentz will be a long term option. I think you just ride the hot hand.

Yeah, he is. It may not last, but for now he is holding his own as a back up outfielder.

I'd get you strawberries and champagne then.

Always liked Kimmi......

Aww, thanks. I like strawberries and champagne.

Sounds like a dangerous combination.

It's what Richard Gere offered Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

Agreed, I got no problem riding the hot hand.

Some answers and responses...

Brentz looks worse than HanRam on defense in LF, hence my DH comment.

Holt is not a 3Bman. He's the reason we signed Pablo. Reason enough?

To me, Hernandez is our back-up 3Bman with Marrero/Rutledge (on DL) further depth. I would not use Holt at 3B very often.

I would not rush Benintendi or Moncada, but personally, I think they are both ready offensively. Benintendi is supposed to be good on D, so I don't see a long wait until he is "ready" to be called up. Moncada still needs to lean how to play 3B, 1B or LF before he gets called up. We may see him in September as a PH option and to give Pedey a spell at 2B.

What's the down side of giving Benintendi a shot?

Position players are much different than pitchers. You don't think Benintendi can't survive a say 1 week slump in the majors? He'll be damaged good forever? He'll have a mental set back of couple of years?

Give me a freaking break. What he breaks out just as Shaw and Leon have?

The point is he CAN play defense. Him going 0-4 is not detrimental to the team unlike a starting pitcher melting down. If Benintendi looks over matched at the plate, just send him down. Do you honestly think his mental fortitude is that weak? Wow....

I don't know, the last time we called up a highly rated prospect with minimal AA and no AAA experience, it didn't go too well (and seems to have messed him up for the better part of two years).

Of course, Benintendi is not JBJ -- different players, different situations -- but the possible downside is pretty easy to see here.

I think the team generally knows what they're doing with this stuff.
