In you guys opinion, what was the worst move this team has ever made?

Pablo Sandoval? Julio Lugo? Allen Craig?

I would have to go with Daisuke Matsuzaka, he was the most painful pitcher Ive ever had to endure, wasn't very good in playoffs, killed the bullpen, and cost a ridiculous amount of money.

What say you guys?

trading Manny July 2008. We keep him and we win that WS. and to me winning the WS outweighs the waste of money that was spent on Pablo, CC, or Craig.

Boras forced the teams hand by instigating Manny to act like a clown but FO could have easily gotten him back in line.

Wily Mo Pena for Bronson Arroyo. Arroyo pitched pretty consistently for a few years after that, I would have much rather kept him in the rotation than have the strikeout machine that was Pena. Wily Mo could hit some seriously long home runs, but there were way too many outs in between them.

Agree keeping Manny, despite his antics, would have been "worth it." Problem is, he wanted out because he was sure he deserved an A-Rod contract. I believed then and still believe we could not keep him for the same reason we could not keep Ellsbury.

Lester for Cespedes has to be up there. We traded our ace for a guy we didn't need in a year when we were going nowhere. Sure we flipped Cespedes for Porcello, and good job there, but I don't think that's really part of the analysis of the Lester trade itself.

1. Babe Ruth

2. Bagwell for Anderson

These are definitely the top 2. It's beyond the scope of this post, but they should have also retained Roger and Boggs for the remainder of their careers.

Crawford.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

And to think that I thought that it was a good signing.

Well that was obvious - the team held options on Manny

If they kept Manny, he wouldn't have hit .400 down the stretch the way he did for LA. He just didn't want to be here and was fine with sulking. Thinking otherwise is revisionist history. Plus, they filled his spot with Jason Bay who played better than Manny had for the Sox that year.

Close.

More like:

1. Babe Ruth

2. Bagwell for Anderson, although Lyle for Cater is certainly in the same ballpark.

I honestly believe that the one single trade of Slocumb for Varitek and Lowell makes up for every bad trade before and after it. That move was a large part of the Sox's first WS championship in 86 years and Varitek was part of the second one, as well.

Lowell?????

Mike Lowell? If so, he was a throw in in the Becket trade. I think.

Yes. It was Varitek and Derek Lowe that we got for Slocum, and yes again that Lowell was the throw in with Beckett. I'll take a "throw in" like that every day.

bagwell for anderson at the time didn't look all that bad. hindsight makes it look ridiculous.

Oops. Yeah, obviously I meant Lowe. Now that it's been brought up, though, Mike Lowell turned out to be a much better throw-in than the kind of guys you usually get.

Lowell turned out to be one of my favorite Sox players of all time. A classy guy who always played the game the right way.

Carl Crawford has to be the worst of all time. 142 million and he provided 0.3 wins to the Red Sox.

I'm still fuming about the Lackey for Craig/Kelly trade too.

And don't ever forget we also traded scraps for a certain P. Martinez within the same 12-month period.

This is a doozie.

Ruth to the Yankees

Jamie Moyer for Darren Bragg

Dave Henderson for a pile of s***

Tris Speaker dealt to Cleveland

Freddy Sanchez and Mike Gonzalez for Suppan and Lyon

Schilling and Brady Anderson for Mike Boddicker

Lyle for Cater

Bagwell for Anderson

Lonborg and Scott for a pile of s***

Some other gems from the 70's:

Cecil Cooper for George Scott and Bernie Carbo

Fred Lynn for one year of Frank Tanana

Bill Lee for Stan Papi

The argument for Crawford would be that just for the mere privilege of getting rid of him, RS had to give up one of the most consistent and productive hitters ever.
