Right now it's Rick Porcillo and Steven Wright, because if both of them weren't performing as well as they are everyone would be on Price like white on rice for not being the ace we thought we were getting. Since these two guys have stepped up like they have the team is winning and we're willing to give Price a chance to settle in but if they weren't it would be getting pretty ugly by now.

No real point here....just an observation.

And yet he has yet to lose a game...

I hear what you're saying, it's not a good sign, but nothing we can do about it but sit and wait for the next start and hope he gets it together.

Still shocked he got the win sunday. He got squeased a bit, but I expect him to overcome such things. I sure hope we didn't get suckered into buying another high-priced lemon. He's a bit of a slow starter, whick I never really noticed before and it's still pretty cold & rainy out. It's not really warm yet and and definetely not summer yet. He's a warm-weather player. It might even explain his post-season numbers. This is reason alone is enough to justify shopping for another TOTR SP in the immediate future.

The key is that we're winning. And we're winning in Price's starts, despite his poor outings. If we were losing, it would be a completely different story. Price is a competitor. He'll figure it out.

His velocity is down and his location is off. He will regain the location, but he needs that top end velo to be an ace.

Obviously. It's not like Arrieta and Kershaw have only slightly higher AFV's than Price this year. Not aces.

It is my belief that a pitcher can still be an "Ace" when his FB velo diminishes.

The good ones are smart pitchers and adjust.

Still, I hope Price gets full command of his FB and his velo comes back.

yup. he should buy his 1-9 batters a steak dinner as well. they have gotten him off the hook a couple/few times already this season.

Price's fundamentals are still quite good. Strikeout rate is fine. His BABIP is really high - and that is driving the ERA/FIP spread. Now some of that is tied into a high line drive rate. How much of all of these things are self correcting is the key. But the strikeout rate has been top notch, and that is a good place to start.

Plus he has basically been either outstanding or not good - so it's not like he hasn't been able to find the form. Just not consistently yet.

I bet Wright would kill for the kind of run support Price gets in an average start. We've already completely wasted 3 strong to excellent starts by him.

Yep. Except for Young and Hanigan. They don't deserve the steak.

It's definitely the offense that has been bailing him out, because the other starters like Wright and Porcello have no impact on whether or now the Sox win the game that Price pitches I'm sure they offer him moral support and what not, but they can only control the days in which they pitch. You have to feel bad for Wright though. He hasn't lost a game yet that he deserved to lose, while Price has only won 2 games that he deserved to win.

S5 .... the other one who is having these early season struggles is with the Diamondbacks ... his situation is worse. He's just as much a fore sure ace as Price. Zack Greinke is 2-2, ERA of 5 and a half ...

I DO think that Price's being here had taken a load off of Porcello, though. He can just be himself and not overpitch. He ain't too bad, just being himself. :o

I have little doubt Price will come around.

But you know me. Optimism overload.

In our recent history, to support your point, see a fella named Pedro. :)

He was a terrific pitcher not just ... but then I don't have to tell anyone here that.

Price is known as one of the hardest working pitchers in all of baseball.....he'll be fine.

Plus, his dog is great for NESN commercials!

I'm not concerned. As a700 has said, he will likely warm up with the weather, if that ever happens. His one warm weather start was the 14 K game in Atlanta.

Hence my assertion that he has the heart of a lion.

Price is also pretty f***ing smart. A lot like Pedro in that regard.

He will be fine.

I think his plus plus attitude has been great for the rest of the staff. Especially the younger ones.

I read today that Wright pitched entirely from the stretch from the 3rd inning on last night. He credits Price with giving him that advice to help him find his release point. I think Price's leadership and other "intangibles" will be just as valuable as his pitching will be.

There ya go! I love all this little stories about him trickling out like that. Eduardo was saying all sorts of things about him in ST...

These little stories about Price keep trickling out too. You never hear a bad thing about him whether in terms of being a great teammate and leader or in terms of the time he takes with the fans. He's a good one, both on and off the field.

So what's wrong with Price?

a)injured

b)it's too cold

c)doesn't care about performance now he's got the big contract

The weather is still s*****. He isn't great in October either. Fun times.

I consider myself a patient man, but is it too much to ask for a QS atleast? Lose two games in row to the yanks because the ump in the first game doesn't know what a strike or a ball is, and the next game our $31MM SP forgot too. We really gonna lose this series just when i started feeling good about this team?

The spectre of injury is rising, I would say.

Farrell and Price both insist that this is not health related.

I certainly hope that it's the cold weather and not a decline in velocity due to age.

It's been such a let down, coming off a big series win in Chicago, to losing a series to a team that has been playing so horribly, especially when you have 2 of your (supposed) best starting pitchers pitching. We'll win tomorrow.
