O'Brien said when it happened that "Surely there will be plenty of talk about this after the game."

But then the Sox won so the reporters pussy footed around it. If the Sox had lost it would have been open season on Farrell.

Yet there was plenty of talk about how Farrell gets a lot of credit for this win because:

1. He kept Pedroia from getting tossed.

2. He fired up the team by getting himself tossed.

I'm not a Farrell/Lovullo basher, but I, too, have to question the decision not to pinch hit for Hanigan.

To me, the Sox are one of the premier organizations in MLB. They have enough money to overpay for the best manager out there. Even if Farrell is simply average, it's a position that can be upgraded.

This I agree with. Farrell's relationship with his players must be so significant that it over shadows the fact that he is average at best with respect to the real baseball stuff. It seems like the franchise could do better.

Yup, I don't hate Farrell. I don't get upset when he's on my screen and scare my dogs out of the room. I just think the Sox should look to upgrade wherever and whenever they can.

The 2016 season is the real referendum on Farrell.

It's been a rollercoaster for him. We'll see where it ends. If the Sox get in the playoffs, I'll give him all the credit in the world.

I agree. I was on the fence about him coming into the season. I'm still more or less on the fence, though I haven't seen anything glaring about him in terms of bad in game moves.

Not sure I get your point. What ever it is.

The writers went with what would probably be the most "clickable", salable , popular story line.

Why waste text bashing Farrell when I can write easy fluff on the positive aspects of the game.

It would be nice to see both criticism and praise for anyone in the same article.

No point. I was actually agreeing with you, though I guess it didn't come across that way.

Turned on the TV today to find that Merloni and company were talking about the Hannigan substitution. I'm sure many in the media are talking about it because that is what they do around here.

I find it strange that no one mentioned the great plays by Wright in the bottom of the 1st inning. To me, those two plays were critical in the victory and very exciting to watch.

Those plays were both crucial. I honestly still cannot believe the Angels didn't score in one of the wildest first innings I've ever seen.

I agree 100%. Pedroia's heroics overshadowed some of the other good things that happened in the game, and Wright's very astute defense should not be overlooked. The same goes with Clay's performance.

Yup. I said it in the GT. Buch looked good. He says that they have changed his arm slot back to what it was in 2013 or something. This has given him better command of all pitches, greater velo and more "bite" on the braking pitches. I always loved that 12-6 curve when it was on.

I am premature here, but I have a hunch that Buch will figure big before this season is over. Either as a RP or starter.

That is an optimistic view and one I hope comes true for both Clay and the team. Why has it taken so long for the team to work on these adjustments for Clay? Sounds like our pitching coaches have not dealt with what was causing his inadequacies.

My view is that we are in a difficult race for the playoffs with two tough teams and as such need to do everything we can to win the ones where we have a solid lead late in the game. Case in point with a 4 run lead going into the 8th and a fresh bull pen of solid relievers available and a pitcher with 93 pitches (4th time around the order), I would have had a relief pitcher up throwing lightly. After Price gave up a home run the red flag should have come up, although anyone can make a bad pitch and a hitter get lucky. After the second hit with no one out, the manager should be thinking Cano and Cruze are coming up soon so I need my relief pitcher ready and I need a second one up. After the third hit in a row, I pull my starter and go to my reliever. Farrell waited for a fourth hitter to get on with the tieing run before making a move. Abad pitch to Cano and we lose.

The Seattle relief pitcher threw extremely hard and mowed down Bradley, Leon and Benintendi although the last called strike was close to 2 inches outside the box at 99 mph so was a bad call.

In my view, this was another example of Farrell waiting too long to make a pitching change.

Reminded me of Bob Melvin not moving a muscle as Jon Lester was letting the Wild Card lead slip away against Kansas City. That said the game went from very easy to very complicated quite quickly. He waited a batter too long maybe. That said, Farrell did get the matchups he wanted - Cano is good.

Plus I think they said Cano lifetime was something like 1-11 against Abad.

To whom it may concern:

It aint about which players you bring in to play anymore. Boston has talent and probably enough talent to make a postseason run. We need a manager that knows the game of baseball(Situational, positioning). I'm tired of watching guys play positions that they shouldnt be(Hanram at 1st/Brentz in LF). Put Hanram back in LF, Shaw/Ortiz at 1B. In little league, they tought me the play is at home plate, in a close game, with a guy on 3rd, and 0 or 1 outs. Apparently, the play is still at 1st base, according to John Farrell and the Boston Red Sox. Im sorry but, in a close game every run counts!!! Its the little things that make or break ball games. This is why this team continues to lose close ball games, very meaningful ones as well. Until this is corrected I don't see this team going anywhere. I dont care which players you call up or trade for anymore, this needs to be fixed...!

You understand that those five words destroyed any credibility you may have had in posting this, right?

Come one man, Farrell sucks but your suggestion about Hanely is beyond laughable. Please restart your thread without joking.

If there was only a thread about this already...

Any post that suggests that Hanley should be playing LF has to be farcical and deserves it's own thread if only to avoid mixing the legit criticism of the manager in the other thread with the ridicule that will pointed at the poster in this one.

This kind of sums it up for me. He waited a batter too long-and even that you had to qualify with a maybe.

Hanley has been perfectly capable at 1b. That shouldn't even be a question. At this point, it's the only position he could field.
