A high school friend of mine where I grew up in Portland Maine had his sister come up and tell him that she had sex with Hanley while he was with the Sea Dogs....she though that he'd be all happy about it being a Sox fan and all

true story...........

It's doubtful people would give enough of a s*** to say stuff about him if he wasn't a superstar baseball player.
People say stuff about poor folks too.

Yeah, playing baseball is a horrible grind and is much more physically demanding than other major sports.

You guys win.

Those football players are woosies. I mean, only 16 games!

Well, nobody said football was easier than baseball, just that baseball is harder than you are saying.

But why come to a logical, well thought-out conclusion when you can be childish?

Being childish is easier. I know that from experience!

Or Carson Smith. There's no shortage of evidence.

Oh man, don't even get me started on pitchers. Baseball is the only sport that has a position where players getting a specific surgery requiring eighteen (!) months of recovery is pretty much a rite of passage.

And there are guys that just get forgotten about, like Workman, who is probably toast.

But being a DH is easy because you just go, take a couple cuts, and voila! You can go relax on your private jet!

What about our boy Freddie Lynn, moon? How many times do we hear it - "probably would have been in the Hall of Fame if not for all the injuries".

Baseball is a wear down sport. The muscles wear down through constant use over 6 months. The muscle fibers that have been over stretched and worked, rip, and pull at ligaments making even more serious injuries an issue. It's an absolute bitch of a sport to play in that sense. And catchers and pitchers in particular...absolutely brutal.

That said it's not as demanding impact wise as the other big 3.

It's impossible to compare really as the stresses and reasons for injuries involved, are usually very different.

If people want to argue that playing other positions are more physically demanding they have a point.

But that is a stupid argument to make if your point is that David Ortiz should be more able to handle playing baseball because he doesn't have any "wear and tear" I apologize but if that is your mind set then you really have very little knowledge of health and human performance.

Sitting at a desk all day shouldn't produce any wear and tear, yet those people see just as much shoulder impingements and rotator cuff injuries. This isn't because they have a "physically demanding position" or they play a lot of basketball or softball rather it is because of the muscular imbalance that sitting in front of a computer all day creates.

Not only do you need to understand that the physiological aspect of swinging a baseball bat is a very violent and unnatural movement, but you also should consider these things HAVE to be looked at on a case by case basis. Yes, David Ortiz plays a less physically demanding position yet that does absolutely zero to validate the argument that he should be able to play well into his 40's due to "less wear and tear". We know for a fact he's been injured, and has played through multiple inuries in the past and that is way more harmful than running around more in the outfield everyday. Also, every time he runs the bases he does so with more weight pounding down on his knees than most other players. That is just one thing of many to consider. David Ortiz is probably going to spend the rest of his life with a heightened risk of foot, knee, and shoulder injuries in retirement. I hope he takes care of himself well.

If you want to offer Ortiz more money to entice him to play another year that is fine, everyone is entitled to their opinion but if anyone thinks David Ortiz SHOULD NOT be worn down at his age because of the nature of his work.....then I'm calling you out for having no ideal what you're talking about.

No one has said that baseball is more demanding than football, basketball or hockey. People have just said that it's harder than casual fans would think.

If there was no DH and Papi had to play 1b everyday, he would have retired years ago. The DH helped him extend his career, but now his body is telling him it's time to give it up. Why else would he make a retirement announcement prior to the season?

Offer him double the salary, but don't be mad if he doesn't accept it.

I don't think my post disputes, or even touches, on that.

I agree with your post. You have no problem from me.

Your post literally says "It's not as demanding impact wise as the other 3", which is debatable at best anyways considering length of season, and the wear-and-tear of certain positions.

Young certainly has picked a good time to start stepping it up. He now has a .295/.368/.577 slash line on the year with a .807 OPS vs. RHP.

Apples to oranges - There is no real sport that if someone takes preparation seriously that won't wear down a body. Injuries because of constant collision might be more realized in some sports as opposed to others but really the harder you work the more likely you are to get hurt. All about what you put into it and makes n difference whether you are an amateur or professional.

It was beyond ignorant to think it compares to your youth baseball and your beer league softball....you said it, not me...

Are you sure that's not a typo?!? I thought he was supposed to be rotten garbage, not a professional hitter.
