I actually do have a fairly decent grasp of the business of business. We all know that they are not running a charitable organization. They are in it to make as much as they possibly can and they are hitting financial home runs. If you want to feel that they have budget restrictions that might alter their attempts to sign anyone that they want to for whatever it takes, that is your opinion. I don't think that we should argue about this one. I really do not share your beliefs on this subject. None of us really knows how they plan to operate. I am guessing that none of us knows.

For better or worse, Henry is the guy who controls this team. He's the one who replaced Ben with DD. He's the one who sets the budget. I think the fact he hired DD indicates he's very fed up with losing and isn't shy about spending.

At the end of the day we're only along for the ride anyway. Might as well try to enjoy it and not worry about 2019 right now.

Couldn't agree more! He gets to spend his money the way he wants to. He may sell out by 2019. it's day to day for me.

Not sure about the comment about 'replacing the DH' adding to the payroll - assuming we keep him, he's already on the roster - Hanley. I'm for keeping him for 2016, at 1B, and let him slide into DH in 2017. I think he could be an outstanding DH - he would stay healthy, and without having to learn a new position for the second or third year in a row, he can focus only on hitting. So unless we can get a really good return for him without having to pay a massive amount of his salary, I say keep him and live with his defense at 1B (which I think will be much better than his LF defense). In fact, I would extend this to say, unless we are blown away by an offer and don't have to pay any of his salary, I would keep him to fill the DH role in 2017 and beyond.

Is there an argument to be made that the DH is already at the club anyway? In the shape of Pedroia?

His bat will hold out a hell of a lot better if he doesn't keep battering himself day in and day out on the field/running the bases.

I guess he wouldn't be best pleased with going DH, but another year of his body breaking down might just convince him. Although possibly not ha!

I guess the Price was right for... Price?

That is huge money though. i like this better than trying to go after Cueto though, even if Cueto is younger.

I'm looking forward to the naysayers' lectures on back end of contracts and dead money. The farm system is doomed and all.

Meanwhile the Sox just landed the best possible option at SP. Not to be confused with the two best offensive players available last off season.

Price is actually still quite good.

Need to round out the pen with two or three decent arms along with a bunch of guys trying out.

Still a bunch of "ifs" on this team but I am feeling much better about the immediate future of the Sox for today, anyway.

i like the idea of the opt out in the contract though, so there's that.

This is a good pickup - it's not my money, no other stuff given up, and the Red Sox pockets are (effectively) bottomless. Who wouldn't like this move? Let John Henry tell the Liverpool manager about his budget cuts in 2018 or whatever.

I see this mentioned a lot. As a Liverpool (UK based fan), I can assure you all...Liverpool don't spend more than they earn as a club. Apart from actually buying the club, money hasn't been injected. It's been raised through smarter commercial deals and huge player sales. Not to mention HUGE TV deals.

No money leaves the Red Sox and finds it's way to Liverpool.

wow 217 mill and 7 years for a 30 y/o pitcher with a 5.12 Postseason ERA?

There are plenty of reasons to cringe at this contract, but Price's postseason ERA is not one of them.

Who said the farm system was doomed?

Pretty sure he's being sarcastic.

This deal actually helps the farm system now (no prospects given up for a top of the rotation pitcher) and in the future (no draft pick compensation for Price).

They have the money and they are spending for the best as opposed to looking for the sales and trying to get something for little or nothing. You get what you pay for. This year we have purchased two of the very best so far. One cost players one cost $. Great for the franchise and probably will wind up making Mr. Henry more money that he will have trouble spending in his lifetime. Sox fever once again.

Probably won't see any more pitchers unless one comes in a trade. Then again they are somewhat in a position to deal from their pitching now as well.

This is a good point.

Any money left in the kitty?

Part of that may depend on what deals they are able to work out in trades. We still have the meetings coming up and I don't think Dombrowski is done just yet.

Buchholz, E-Rod, Miley, Kelly, Porcello, Owens. I would expect maybe one of them gets moved as well as an outfielder at this point.

They now have the currency to move Sandoval for Shields (if the Padres bite) and get a 3B or 1B from someone else.

I would love that. Should have tried to work that into the Kimbrel trade, to even things out a bit since Sox were overpaying with prospects. Don't know why Padres would want to do that trade on its own now. Maybe if Cherington gets a job with the Padres.

Do the panda for shields trade and sign Chris Davis.

I agree. Any upgrade in the staff will come via a trade. Do you keep three lefties in your starting rotation or do you move Miley.

I'm not moving Miley I know that... I think he's too steady of a #3 or lower in your rotation. I really liked him last year. Definitely a guy that puts out 100% every time out.

I wonder if Padres would do Shields for Panda and Miley (doubt it). With a not-top prospect included? With some cash included?. Hanley is probably capable of playing 3rd as bad as Panda. Shaw was also working at 3B at the end of last year (don't know how it went). Hanley and Shaw at the corners with Holt sprinkled in. Rotation of Price/Shields/Buchholz/ERod/Porcello with Kelly in pen as backup SP. Looks pretty damn good to me. Hopefully Dumbrowski is on the phone.

Dumbrowski seems to be doing all the GMing, so what's the actual GM doing? Cant even remember who it is because he's never mentioned.
