The starting pitching has been a problem for years now. And we have all read that the FO was going in a different direction and not signing big contracts on pitchers on the wrong side of 30 and that the propects they have in the system would fill the voids. Well that being said and this rotation from top to bottom struggling why not bring up Johnson & Owens now and say here let's see what ya got. I hate the idea of a pitcher needing more seasoning when in this Tommy John Era putting more innings on a young kids arm is playing with fire. Let's see what the kids have got before teams are willing to trade at the deadline. I know the idea of no they have more trade values in the minors, well f*** that if they are legit pitching prospects let's see what they got in a big league red sox uniform instead of as a trade chip and pitching against up in years to come.

By years, you mean 1+, right?

You and I had a conversation about 5-6 years ago about swinging on the first pitch.

Remy said last night that the Sox should start swinging more at the first pitch. I see them taking meatballs down the middle and I tend to agree.

One thing I hate, and Pedroia does this the most. Is they back out of the box when the first pitch is thrown. Or they look like they are just taking a pitch.

You do that enough, and it's a sure signal to grove the first pitch to a player. At least look like you are going to swing if you watch one, it doesn't signal that you always take the first pitch.

A lot of hitters like to take the first pitch to judge the pitcher's velocity. However, they need to swing at it occassionally to keep the pitcher's honest and prevent them from getting a free strike in every AB

I get that. But, if you telegraph by stepping out you look at every first pitch the first two times you see a pitcher, then from video they know to throw a strike. Maybe swing at an occasional strike, then at least act like you are ready to hit the first pitch instead of stepping out, that next pitcher might now just groove the first couple of pitches.

You can judge velocity just as well by standing in the box the same way you would do if you were possibly going to swing.

Maybe it's nothing, but it kind of bugs me.

Yes, it bugs me too.

Just more dumpster diving.

Maybe the Sox need org depth in the outfield if they plan on moving some people?

I'd hate to see Brentz go. Who knows?

"Alejandro De Aza headed to Red Sox"

In 32 games for the PawSox, Bradley's hitting .352/.408/.508 with three home runs and 12 RBI.

Not much love for JBJ.

If the Sox offense were hitting like they were projected to, they could afford to give JBJ another shot.

With the way they're hitting right now, I don't think they can do that.

The issue is everybody knows he can hit AAA pitching

I'm not so sure they will ever hit anywhere close to what was projected. JBJ would at least help them with run prevention.

De Aza isn't a bad move. He plays respectable defense in CF, can platoon against RHP in a lineup that only has one LHH -- who happens to be on the DL.

Not a starter, but if it is only money, he fits on the bench well enough.

Better than Peguera.

Another head scratcher of a move. It's the pitching stupid!!

Is De Aza so far superior to Peruga (sp?) to make it worth the trouble? They're both lefties, they're both bench players.

It's an aimless waste of time.

It makes you wonder Ted if Cherington isn't full panic mode with those moves. Peguero is terrible and was rejected by Texas and Baltimore got rid of Di Aza (sic) I don't see how he can help but if he can I would accept it because we do need some offense. Another sad performance tonight....two hits?????

Where does the offense rank in runs and OBP?

In terms of wRC+ and ERA both departments are at 26 th. In terms of WAR it is the same.

13th and 8th in AL.
OBP is is middle of the pack but runs is putrid. As some would say the run production is an anomaly with a middle of the pack OBP. And I would have to agree that the run ranking would come up. If the offense is over rated/under performing, it will still be, at worst, a middle of the pack offense.

The achilles heel of the team will be the pitching. I'd hate to see the figures just on the 5 guys that started off the year in the rotation. The offense has talent and will get better. The pitching needs talent and they will have to get some from outside the organization.

Fielding?, in terms of UZR/150, we are at 25th.
That is not plus fielding. The big culprits are he 2 free agents. I know that Pedroia's errors are up, but some of those errors were questionable calls. One was clearly XB's error, not Pedey's. I'll take Pedey on my defensive squad every time. XB has made a huge improvement. Panda has been bad. Napoli bad too. Hanley is a train wreck.
