Ted---I could be way off the mark but I think I finally have zeroed in on what the Red Sox are going to do. With Napoli's signing (1B--reserve catcher, etc), they are going hard after Hamilton for the outfield, will make that trade with the White Sox for Floyd, and then use some moderate cash to sign Dan Haren. That would conclude their major winter shopping and with only some work on the edges from now until ST.

Is it possible I might be on the right track? It sure looks that way to me right now.

I think that would be about as good of an offseason as we could ask for. I really hope you're right here.

It hasn't stopped them before. That's 2014 not 2013. They still can trade one of them and eat some salary. Jeter might be gone by 2014. Swisher is gone.

Good. That's still $124.5mm for 5 players. That's still 64.5mm left for the remaining 35 players on your 40 man roster. Jeter has an $8mm player option. That puts it at $132.5mm, and now you have $56.5mm for 34 players.

Oh. And you also don't have Pettitte, Kuroda, or Hughes.

So....CC + Nova. That's your rotation.

Oh. And lets not forget the 8 arbitration eligible players. That's about $25mm there.

So now you have $31.5mm to pay 26 players. And you need 3 SP. Not sure if you've noticed, but SP is kind of going at a premium, and outside of Phelps (who is not a #3, and oh by the way, Nova is certainly not a #2), you have nobody internally.

So please, explain to me how the Yankees would make this work? You going to bank on being able to deal ARod? Please. Nobody is taking that geriatric. Or Tex.

Or are you just going to watch Cano walk?

That would be a pretty good deal there, I think they are going to aim for Swisher though, I really do.

I think we'll probably see Swish, MAYBE Haren, and maybe even Brian Wilson.. Apart from that we'll maybe see some more SP depth signings, but nothing special.

I actually agree that this is the direction they're taking.

Rotation of Lester - Buch - Haren - Floyd - Lackey

Lineup of Ells - Pedey - Hamilton - Ortiz - Napoli - WMB - Lav/Ross - Gomes/Kalish - Iggy

Certainly a contender.

I do also think that they will make a play for Brian Wilson or Rafael Soriano. I think they're tired of watching leads explode in the late innings.

I don't see that as unreasonable. Salty to the White Sox for Floyd is a great match up. But Haren would be tricky at that point because they would have Lester, Buchholz, Haren, Floyd, Lackey and Doubront. Maybe Lackey starts on the DL. Or the Sox pull the trigger on a Myers deal and look to add a SP later in the season if need be?

Hamilton is tricky also, but it doesn't seem like he is getting those long term options. So a shorter deal with bigger AAV could actually work. 3/75(25M AAV), 4/88(22M AAV), 5/100(20M AAV).

5/125 is absolute comfortable limit, and I made need a couple tums at night :D

I'd rather sign Youkilis at 20MM a year than deal prospects for that guy

Soriano is going to be too expensive. Wilson is def a possibility.

I'm hoping for a Jurrjens signing too.

Laser, I should have addressed my post to all of you instead just to my friend Ted.

To me the rumor of our trade for Floyd for one of our catchers means we don't spend a lot of money in such a deal which enables us to have enough cash to make a big signing. Napoli's inking of the three year deal gives us the extra RH hitter we need so we could afford to add another lefty, one with great power as well and still leave us with enough left over cash to sign a pitcher like Haren. It might be another pitcher but for some reason I think the Sox are going to go after Josh Hamilton this time.

I do think the Sox make a major move before long.

Whether that means somehow trading for Giancarlo Stanton, or Tulowitzki, or signing Josh Hamilton, I think they're still going to get some thunder in that lineup.

I'm still holding out hope (albeit unrealistic hope) that the Sox shock the world and trade for Stanton.

I would love nothing more than to see Hamilton in a Sox uniform. Also, recent reports suggest that Diamondbacks are pushing hard to trade Justin Upton. Could be an intriguing option.

I think Atlanta might package Simmons for Upton. I'd rather just spend money on Swisher/Hamilton then give up top prospects for Upton.

I like that plan, and I hope that you are right. Baseball could be fun again at Fenway.

I think these moves would be a good compromise for what all of us wanted to see the team do. They field a competitive team without blocking or trading the next batch of high talented prospects. I don't think either side of the fence could argue these moves if they so happened.

It could be as peaceful as it's ever been at talksox

I've been living out here in CA for about 11 years and I'm so sick of this message board paying $60 a game to be the next GM of the Red Sox. These baristas have more of fight then you guys when you get your coffee spilled.

f***ing Bakersfield... What a shithole.

Cherrington said that the Sox are a bit righty heavy right now, and they are looking to balance the lineup.

*cough, Hamilton, cough*

Well Swisher can technically bat LH too but ya, it's getting interesting.

I should have clarified. There are 2 comments that make me think the Sox are going to sign Hamilton.

1. Lucchino said he wanted a guy who can play RF and CF.

2. Cherrington said they are RH heavy and would like to balance the lineup.

Both perfectly describe Hamilton.

Damn, this lineup would be disgusting with Hamilton and Napoli.

It's refreshing to see some optimism in here!

The Napoli deal really set the tone here for the day. It's been nice around here, well except for the f***tard bubbakeg

Hmmm ok, Wow ya that line up would be pretty bad ass. We will see, I'm hopeful.

This is a phenominal move in many ways.

1) Adding a monster bat to the lineup.

2) Using Vmart as a comparison, the Red Sox seriously underpaid for Napoli. One less year, 500k fewer bucks per year before factoring inflation.

3) No draft pick given up to sign him.

4) Takes yet another catcher off the free agent market place, increasing Salty's trade value.

5) Tells free agents that this team is very serious, without hurting their payroll to a point where it will prevent them from making more signings.

Half a decade is a short period of time to asses talent. Good one! Illetriate son of a bitch!

This right here folks, is the definition of irony.

I just hope he loses interest for good before the gamethreads come back.

BSN why why why why why do you insist on the idea that the Sox would consider trading Lester if they're going to spend money going for it this year? It doesn't make ANY sense.

I kind of can't believe nobody has mentioned this.

John Lackey has thrown to Mike Napoli for 399.1 IP, and has a career 3.63 ERA with Napoli as his catcher.

EDIT: In those 399.1 IP, opponents have a .693 OPS against Lackey, too.

Don't get you hopes up, I think it's more likely they sign Victorino or Swisher.
