  1. But is the prettiest girl at the dance the same one you want to marry (as long as we're going down the analogy hole)? In a RW example, almost everyone will say that Alonso will out-perform Contreras over the next two years. But a fair amount of people would expect Contreras to have a similar WAR/$$$ value, and most people won't like the final three years of Alonso's deal.
  2. I'm never serious about anything. It just reminded me of the Married with Children when they go to their HS reunion and Al is making fun of the math geeks, and the math geeks are sitting with the hottest girls in the room.
  3. Another wager I'd glad make-that we get a 2B or 3B with an OPS higher than league average.
  4. The only current 3B with an .820 over the past three years (min 1000 PAs) is Jose Ramirez and Max Muncy. There are some excellent 3Bs out there (Bregman, Machado, Riley, Chapman) that aren't all that close to .820. My assertion is that we will acquire a quality 2B/3B and I am willing to wager on it.
  5. Why would they do that? Do you really think they are going to trade assets for a mediocre replacement when we already have a mediocre replacement?
  6. I couldn't care less. When I hear from Bregman, then I might care more. Just a couple of quotes: "(The Cubs) offered more money," Heyman continued when asked what the biggest difference this offseason was. “They made an offer to Alex Bregman early in the offseason and said, ‘Here it is,’ and (Bregman’s) camp kept going back, saying, ‘That’s not our market, our market’s higher than that,’ and it made Alex a little bit mad and they would not move,” Pierzynski said during a recent episode of “Foul Territory.” “The Red Sox, literally, would not move and would not budge and really wouldn’t negotiate until it was too late.”
  7. AJ got his info from his network inside the MLB industry. Only one of these two versions can be right. Either AJP heard it from a first-hand, unbiased source, or he's just passing along a rumor. Who is the 'network insider'?
  8. If that's your acknowledgement that I am right, thank you.
  9. link? 1=winning team had both more HRs and higher OBP. 2-winning team had more HRs 3-winning team had higher OBP World Series 2 ALCS 3 NLCS 1 AL Division Series 1 AL Division Series 1 NL Division Series 3 NL Division Series Wild Card Series 3 Wild Card Series 1 Wild Card Series 1 Wild Card Series 1
  10. Not me. Nothing is better for mental clarity and acuity than than having a stake in the game. If anyone thought we were sticking with the current roster, they would take me up on my offer (assuming they no philosophical objection to wagering).
  11. You lost: you can stop dancing now. They aren't trading for a dumpster product and starting him at 2nd or 3rd. You know that. But the fun part is, I know you know that.
  12. Change this to "now that Fred declined" (as I knew he would). Anyone else interested?
  13. I wouldn't think so either. But he would still be on my list. He might be worth more to us as a 3B than to Houston as a RF. And if the rumors are true that they are interested in Abreu, where would they play Smith?
  14. After Fred declines, this bet will be open to anyone else.
  15. What's your point? The Cubs bid more than us.
  16. Keep thinking that you know what happens in Breslow's office.
  17. Deferrals are not only not new, they are also something any team can do. Not everyone can pay Tucker $60M. But even with a $10M contract, if you can afford to pay someone $10M this year, then you can afford to pay them $10.45M next year. That's a certainty.
  18. It's my own analysis, so it's I can link to. But it shouldn't take long to replicate. But first I need to see which mound of snow my car is under.
  19. That the smartest guy in the room doesn't go home with the prettiest girl, is not unusual in HS.
  20. I believe I already did this analysis. And the team with the higher OBP percentage, relative to their opponent, won more series than the team that out-homered their opponent.
  21. I'd gladly take that bet. I am willing to bet that either our starting 2B or our starting 3B, will be someone not currently on our 40-man roster. A signature wager perhaps?
  22. HRs are more fun, but OBP is more closely correlated to scoring than HRs. They both count, but OBP counts more.
  23. So, just as an extreme example, if the RS were to have taxable income of $20M this year, all they would have to do is pay Contreras his 2027 $20M on 12/31/2026, and the IRS would accept that the RS had -0- taxable income in 2026? Or conversely, for GAAP purposes, the LAD could defer everyone's salary until 1/1/27, and show operating income of like $700M? Last time I did this, we had to match our expenses to the period in which the income was earned. And real recently, we still accrued salary expense from the first January payroll.
  24. The Angels just retired Rendon. I think most teams are reluctant to do so because the GM doesn't want to write off one of the contracts they recently signed. Poor optics. But imo, it's a bad idea to drag Rendon around, and have him clog up a 40-man spot during the off-season. I'm saying I'd give back a lot of my contract just so I can retire early. But if I already made a gazillion $$$, I probably would give up some of rather than go through the pretense that I was still coming back.
  25. I've said this before. There is no evidence to suggest Ceddanne will out-perform Romy/DHam. Using the PAs suggested by FG, Romy/DHam produce a .726 wRC+ while Ceddanne produces a .730. Duran over Yoshi is a bigger markup.
