  1. Yes and no. While it makes sense to strike while the iron is hot, one could consider Crochet a once-in-a-decade opportunity. The rest of the signings were business as usual.
  2. The question is "what did they do with the Devers money".
  3. 1-I listen to WFAN. The NYY fans that call in are waaay less entitled than RS fans. Not remotely close. 2-The EE didn't win their division last year. 3-Every team has injuries, and every team gets players back from injury. We'll be getting Casas, Mayer, Anthony & Abreu back.
  4. But isn't 2 decades 20 years ago? What about the three WSC we've won since then?
  5. Signing the #2 free agent would be ugly?
  6. I'd say it is very unlikely that we don't acquire a player better than Polanco. If I thought he could play 2nd, I still wouldn't do it But at least it's an opening. But for $26M, we could probably get Bregman, and that's not close talent-wise. We can't bemoan losing some very overpaid FAs that aren't even good fits. Someone else in one of the other threads mentioned that we lost 'Mays'. I realize in retrospect that he meant May, but who the heck thinks of May as someone that we missed on?
  7. The NYY have lost Goldschmidt, Bellinger and Devin Williams, and have acquired no one. Seattle has lost Polanco & Suarez and acquired no one. I could go on, but it's meaningless at this point.
  8. Of the top 50, only 19 have signed, and only 13 teams accounted for the 19 signings. So by default, you must be including 13 teams that have signed someone not in the top-50. So are you looking for us to sign one of those #51-100 FAs?
  9. I certainly hope that no one wants May back. That's delusional. IRT Polanco, the Mets will start him at DH. Anyone wanting to pay Polanco $20M to DH is likewise delusional.
  10. When I started, the auditors did serious digging. Now they spend more time on check lists. I did my thesis on the some of the financial fiascos from the early '90s (Barings, Sumitomo copper, etc.). The audits were worthless. In the Barings case, the perpetrator sent a confirmation, supposedly from a US bank, from his home computer. He forgot that he programmed his fax machine to have a header "From <him and his wife>. The auditor never caught it.
  11. IMO, another awful signing by the Mets. $20M for a DH. maybe a 1B?
  12. Red Sox have passed 'entitlement' like it was standing still. I would guess that even Yankee fans have been astonished at how much more entitled RS fans are than the Yankee fans are.
  13. Glasnow will be a negative, but Rushing is pretty interesting. LAD has a lot of good prospects.
  14. Interesting spray chart. Those little red dots look like only 7 HRs at Fenway.
  15. Contreras is underwater. He will cost nothing.
  16. I never too excited about these things, for a couple of reasons. The payroll number will be one of the driving factors. If we spend $263,999,999, we're getting some good players. They might be HR hitters, they might great glove/good bat players, or they might the #2 SP I want. But we will get some good talent. Most of what we do in here is fantasy baseball. A lot of educated guesses, but still guesses. I like Okamoto & Kim. I might even be more right than wrong, but it is still my amateur opinion. And as I always mention, there are a dozen ways to build a team. Paying a high price for Greene will make us a great team. Paying a lesser price for Marte will make us a very good team. Paying for Okamoto & Kim, and keeping prospects, will make us a very good team. We could trade either Duran or Abreu, or any of our 6-10 SPs, or Campbell and acquire some good talent.
  17. It's entirely possible that Stearns has a plan that he is not sharing with the fans. Fans are freaking out on FAN. My guess is that they are landing Tucker at a price that will be a discount to Alonso's value, and they will follow that up with a #2 SP.
  18. We need desperately to separate bookkeeping from accounting. Almost all the stuff people do in accounting doesn't require more than a 2-year degree The MBA is a joke. The graduate level accounting classes I took were identical to the undergrad accounting classes I took. And accounting is not the only profession like that.
  19. I always consider that. I always like to see the motivation when teams allow players to leave, especially teams where payroll is no issue.
  20. Either Rubenstein is moving in a lot of money, or Elias is feeling the heat after last season. They've gone from $89M to $126M to $177M, and they are currently at $178M and need at least one more good SP, maybe 2.
  21. If you're going to pay Seager $189M to age 37, you might as well pay Bregman $150M to age 36 and keep everyone.
  22. Me neither. IMO, there will be GMs calling to steal him for a one-year #3 SP. But I think there will also be GMs that think this is a golden opportunity to acquire a top-15 prospect at a discounted price. I leaning towards further development, because his ceiling is so high. But if someone asked for him to be included for Greene, Burns or Chandler, maybe Marte, I would have to listen.
  23. He's not: he's regressed. IMO, they should write him off for the full year and keep him in AAA. Keep him in one spot for the entire year, and work on building his strength. It was a reasonable gamble that he could handle MLB pitching given his AAA stats and development, but it didn't work. Need to start over.
