  1. As good as Abreu and Rafaela are doing, and they lead many rookie categories, if they could stand to take Ball 4 just once in awhile the pitchers would have to come to them , creating a higher level of performance. But they are chasers at heart.
  2. Did not take Nick long to join Kutter and Tanner in the HR Derby reversed. At least Nate, a better pitcher, had to throw a lot of pitches to retire the Red Hots with no runs.
  3. Red Hot hitters, chilly pitchers leads to 5-9 since A-S Break . Important to just win each series so this is a KEY game. KC could be caught this week with a win today and a sweep in KC coming up. Can Pivetta control the HR, a feat he has trouble with.
  4. Why does Bochy bother going out to the mound. If it is as painful as it looks, just wave Bruce.
  5. Let's see if the Sox can serve up some more LOBster sandwiches this inning. Getting 2 leadoff men on, no outs, followed by K, soft fly and groundball when they are down 1 is not a great look
  6. The MLB.com note says it could keep Tyler out until Wednesday. Didn't say what it was, HIPPA you know
  7. Red Sox still playing guys out of position ( Wong), playing rookies who come up in key situations and get jumpy like Gonzales over a bad call. Refsnyder was not intended to play full time RF. O'Neill is sick for more than a day. Good thing Devers is carrying the load now.
  8. Another 2 out HR Derby. The run could have helped
  9. It is frustrating as to how good he could become, and may yet, if he could recognize a pitch for what it is. That K vs BB cost a run . The one pitch in the middle of the plate that he did swing at, he missed
  10. The odd trend is the postgame discussions unrelated to the game including wildly inflammatory attacks on some people.
  11. Moon, that is a massive amount of work and thought to say that , finally, there is some chance that organizational depth Position players only) can be used to address the pitching shortfalls. Those shortfalls in terms of capable bodies will only be worsened with the pending FAgency of Pivetta, Paxton, Martin and Jansen. Priester may be some help in '25, Hendriks and Giolito should be throwing, so it's not an empty barrel, but it does require full recoveries for the sore arms, and development of the new arm. That presumes no season long injuries to Houck, Crawford , Criswell and Bello. It's fairly clear that over the off season, Breslow must find at least 2 starters and 2 relievers , with at least average ability, to build the staff up to a point that will match the player position roster. He also needs to work on the LH batter heaviness .
  12. You realize Fried is on the DL, though getting back to a bullpen session. Cause of injury is left forearm strain/tightness an absolute indicator of UCL damage, making Max a perfect candidate for the Sox to offer the 31 year old ( as of Jan 2025) a large contract and multi-year commitment. I would give this rumor about 0.01% chance of happening
  13. Looking for Kutter to get his mojo back after his last 2 bombing missions in LA and vs NY . The innings are piling up but time to compete in these final 55, Mr. Crawford.
  14. Being realistic ( this is not a game thread) I am between your 88-74 , a considerable rush to the finish line, and MVP's 78-84 which smells of looking at recent history. I think 84-78 is doable and despite the Diamondback's run last year, it will be 1 or 2 games short of the #3WC. At that point, I look at the FO who dithered before the deadline when Martin and Slaten were IL'ed to call up the Waste Management's special pickup division for help after the A-S break.
  15. Back to Realistic View: Part III After 107 games, Sox are 7 over .500 with 55 to go , with about 29 of those with similar to better records, and some ahead in the 3 team WC race in the AL. If the Sox finished the 55 games, also 7 over .500 31-24 , a considerable reach, their record would be 86-76. A big improvement on '22/'23 but enough to make WC #3 ? #1 WC looks to be Yankees if they don't flop again. Twins, Royals, Mariners/Astros plus Red Sox will take #2 and #3 . 12 games of the 55 are against those 4 opponents, plus another 4 with NYY. The 7 over .500 is already a stretch for 55 games. The results of the 12 head to heads will be the test for Boston to prevail or succumb to almost, but not quite enough.
  16. Interesting comments by Ian Browne on MLB about two reasons Yoshida had a strong July. One, his confidence to fully swing the bat after his thumb injury is back. Yoshida says he was reluctant to cut loose when first returning. I will say, somewhat obvious reaction to hurting yourself. A significant thought about Triston Casas's return from the rib injury. Second, Yoshida's family ( wife/2 kids) came to Boston and he is a happy Yoshi . Mental attitude is a key to a positive approach to your job. Hopefully, this happy camper will hit very well in August too. But, damn, he is a slowpoke on the bases. The contract is what it is for another 3 seasons . At some point Yoshi could hit his way into a more valuable DH type, but always in a limited capacity as a non-fielder. I still think the Angels could be a place for him before the contract ends. LAA loves bad deals
  17. Just poking the bear for fun. I'm well aware of the years long discussion on "clutch"
  18. "All year long" is a reach. 7 RBI's in April , combined with the .872 OPS tells me he wasn't CLUTCH back then.
  19. At 2-0 , you are totally correct and wondered why they didn't put him. I guess Servais didn't want to lose to a 3 run HR, lol. That situation was not well handled by manager or pitcher, who could have semi-intentionally walked him.
  20. Devers gets the big hit to win it as he should
  21. Kelly, no command, no control, skating on thin ice
  22. i regret that the Sox will play O'Neill about 50 more games this year
  23. 1 for 8 RISP, 10 LOBsters. Wasting some good pitching. Kelly better be ready to continue it
  24. Too bad Duran was not on second for Gonzalez hit but it was maybe a 50-50 prop, so win it now.
  25. Kenley gets out of the inning but always plays with fire , deep counts. But he has been that way long before coming to Boston.
