    No, I would rather the owners not hand out monster contracts, and by 'monster', I'm speaking more about the number of years than the dollar amount. Forty million a year for Bregman is way too much, IMO, but the saving grace of that contract is that it's only for 3 years. I'd rather see that than see a 10 year deal with an AAV of $30M. The Red Sox owners are not cheapskates, despite the popular opinion of fans.

    It takes a lot of planning and it begins with a strong farm system.

    All is not lost. We've been losing a lot of 1-run games. While these losses tend to be a lot more frustrating than losses by 4 or 5 runs, it bodes better for future games that we are losing close games rather than getting blown out. And we are still only 2 games back in the division.

    The offense not scoring is more frustrating to me than the bullpen. At least our starting pitching has been pitching pretty well.

    I am still feeling good about our bullpen. It's odd that Whitlock and Slaten both had bad outings in the same back-to-back games, with Slaten also giving up the winning run in his outing prior to those two games. Outside of the very recent past, they have both been pretty dominant this season.

    Well maybe now we know why the big guys, like Casas, don't run hard down the line. 🙄

    The White Sox are not good either. The Blue Jays were in a rut. We awakened them. I am still ticked about Game 2 of that series. 😡 That said, I agree that we should win the series. One game at a time, starting with tonight.

    They can put together great teams without handing out monster contracts.

    No doubt. Teams have money to hand out contracts like that. It doesn't mean they should.

    Not only did we not hit a grand slam last year, but we also gave up the most in the league (9), including one to our nemesis, the White Sox. LOL Meanwhile, the DBacks hit 11 last year.

    No doubt. I'm not saying that he won't have a great career, but small sample sizes work both ways, good and bad.

    The real question is, when will the Red Sox hit their next grand slam. If I'm not mistaken, the last one was on August 7, 2023 by Pablo Reyes.

    I was very pleased with Rafaela's extension at the time it happened, and still am. I know the Red Sox aren't going to extend them all, but I likely would be pleased with extending any of the players you mentioned above, except for Slaten. That's nothing against Slaten, but rather my opinion of contracts for relief pitchers. Rafaela's extension is peanuts.

    I understand that we are offensively weak at a couple of positions. At the moment, the need to improve offense is nothing dire. Narvaez' and Rafaela's offense, or lack thereof, are not concerns for me. Casas' lack of offense is a concern. It's too bad that we don't have a good depth option to replace Casas, if needed. All that said, I'm good with waiting things out a little longer.

    It's been noted many times, but it's worth noting again how Duran runs so hard on every play. Every player should do that on every play, except possibly if a player is nursing an injury. Even the big guys, like Casas and Devers, should be running hard out of the box.

    I try to temper my enthusiasm over him after only a month, but it's hard not to be excited. I currently have more confidence in him at the plate than I do any guy in the lineup, except for maybe Bregman. You're right, he carries himself well for being only 22.

    Fair point about the judgment calls. It would be hard to say that a judgment call is wrong, though there are times when they are pretty clearly wrong. Outside of that, it just doesn't make any sense to me why you couldn't review a call like the one mentioned in my previous post.

    It's understandable to want Anthony on the team right now. I get it. Anthony will get his chance soon enough.

    Despite most of us being frustrated with our offense, they are near the top of the league in most offensive categories. If they could only cut down on the strikeouts... Anyway, it was nice taking the series from Cleveland. If we could stop taking 2 steps backward after taking 2 steps forward, we might be able to stop hovering around .500.

    As people have said before, neither Rafaela nor his contract is the problem.

    That is so true about making the right decision and getting the wrong outcome, both on the business side of things and with game situations. I've also seen plenty of in game decisions that were "bad" decisions, but they ended with a good outcome. When they work, whether it's a good decision or not, it makes the involved parties look like geniuses. When they don't work, not so much.

    What I'm saying is that if the Sox hadn't extended him, and he exceeds expectations, people would be criticizing the FO for not extending him. No one knows how these things are going to work out. It's a risk worth taking, IMO. Also, IMO, it was a good deal. I think his defense alone pretty much makes it worth it. I agree that he needs to show a little more on offense. Honestly, I was rather surprised when I returned to this site and read the posts about Rafaela not being worth the contract.

    I am not a fan of instant replay, but since we have it, it really irks me that some plays are reviewable and others are not. The play I am thinking about is the non triple play turned by the Nats a couple of days ago. It goes without saying that the missed call could have very likely changed the outcome of the game. Why is a catch versus trapped ball on the infield not reviewable, especially since it is reviewable in the outfield? For that matter, why isn't every play reviewable?

    Well said Drewski. I very much agree with your opinion of keeping as much depth as you can for as long as you can. Depth and versatility. It's oftentimes not the starter who will get you to the playoffs, but how well the depth player can fill in when the starter goes down with injury.

    I don't disagree. It could be a nice solution to a couple of issues, though.
