  1. On the topic of Bello, what would make him pitch so poorly as a starter, but pitch very well following a 1-inning opener? Is it really that much more challenging to get through the top of the lineup at the beginning of the game? Is it all mental?
  2. IMO, we should be a middle of the pack offense, at worst, not one of the bottom 2 or 3. With elite pitching, that should have been good enough. I was one who preferred that we added another starter over adding another bat. All that said, I understand the point of view of those who wanted to add a big bat.
  3. We have the pitching and the defense to be a very competitive team. Our offense is currently pretty unwatchable, but I can't believe they're as bad as what they've shown. I'm as frustrated as anyone else with this team right now, but there's a lot of baseball left to be played. As we've seen many, many times, things can look a lot different in one week, much less 4+ months.
  4. Personally, I'm a big fan of nerds, baseball and otherwise.
  5. Even though things look really bad offensively, I didn't think we needed another bat. We need the guys we have to get on base like they are capable of getting on base, namely Durbin and Duran, and to a lesser extent Anthony, even though he's on the IL right now. Case in point: Milwaukee Brewers Last in HRs, 28th in slugging, 3rd in OBP, 4th in baserunning (BsR), 8th in runs scored.
  6. I miss the old Red Sox line ups that knew how to work counts and would often have the starting pitcher out of the game in the 5th inning (when starters were regularly going 7 innings.) Not only are we not getting on base, we're not making the opposing pitchers work, especially in the first inning. We are 27th in pitches/plate appearance.
  7. Although having a lot of LOBs is extremely frustrating, it's typically a sign of good offensive production. Teams that score a lot of runs will typically also have a lot of LOBs.
  8. LOL Ouch. To be fair, the Red Sox have been a very good defensive team this year. Very good.
  9. IMO, hitters are too pull happy, especially with sinkers. They too often end up grounding out.
  10. OBP remains the single stat with the strongest correlation to runs scored. You score the most runs by not making outs.
  11. I can't really argue with any of that. Still, despite being a strong proponent of defense, I would have left Devers at 3B and put Bregman at 2B. Call me crazy. That said, Devers should have been taking reps at 1B all along. Perhaps he would have been more inclined to move to 1B once Casas was injured if the Red Sox had initially sold him on the idea that he was our #2 first baseman on the depth chart.
  12. Bright side: There's nowhere to go but up!
  13. I know I've posted this before, and I know how bad Mayer has been against lefties, but I don't think he should be platooned. He's not going to improve against lefties unless he gets the at bats against them. (In a very small sample, he has good numbers against LHP so far this year.) Anthony has been most disappointing this year.
  14. No doubt it probably would have been bad. But the middle infield defense (namely 2nd base) would have been much better than what we had.
  15. I'm in the camp that says to take the risk and extend them early. Either that, or you risk the player pricing himself out of reasonable range.
  16. I really didn't have any problems with keeping Devers at 3B and playing Bregman at 2B. That said, I wouldn't want Devers back, even if the Giants ate a big chunk of his contract. He lost me when he put himself before the team.
  17. I'm a big fan of Story's, but I tell you, when he is going bad, it's really bad. Durbin has also been disappointing so far, but at least he's been good on defense.
  18. I hate the Rays, so it wasn't refreshing for me to see them scratch out runs against the Red Sox. That said, I think Kevin Cash deserves a lot of credit. Things will likely change a lot by the end of the season, but who would have thought the Rays would have the 2nd best winning % in all of baseball at this point? It has been refreshing to watch some other teams play, and watch other teams be able to overcome 3, 4, or 5 run deficits.
  19. Exhausting is a good way to describe this team. The pitching has looked pretty good as of late, but the offense is truly unwatchable. I'm still waiting for them to turn the corner... Our saving grace is that the entire American League pretty much stinks, outside of a couple of teams.
  20. They have been really pathetic to this point, no doubt. Do you think that will continue? Do you think they are as bad as they are currently performing? I don't. I don't expect them to out-offense the Yankees, but I do expect them to be a lot better than what they're currently showing. And perhaps the Yankees fall into a midseason funk. You never know.
  21. I love both Francona and Cora. IMO, both are very good players managers, which also IMO, is far more important than being a good in-game strategist. That said, perhaps it was time for Francona to go when he did. And perhaps it was time for Cora to go, not that the underperformance of the team is necessarily his fault. I think I am more upset by the disrespect that Varitek is feeling from the team. By all accounts, he is one of the hardest-working coaches in baseball. I'm not sure what his "re-assignment" is all about. Re-assign him to future manager of the team.
  22. As optimistic as I am that the Red Sox will make the playoffs, I really can't see them winning the division. It's not just about the poor start that the Sox got off to, it's also about how good the Yankees are playing. That said, I also wouldn't rule it out completely. Stranger things have happened. That's why you play the games.
  23. Anthony needed to be moved out of the lead off spot. I, too, like Duran leading off, despite his current numbers. I also like (in a very small sample) how the team seems like they will be doing more running. They're not hitting a lot of home runs, so take advantage of that athleticism on the basepaths.
  24. I'm still very optimistic that the Sox will make the playoffs. They will hit better than they have been hitting. They were probably never going to be a top 5 offense, but nor should they be anywhere near the bottom 3 in offense. They're much better than that. As Crochet said, a team can't be out of the playoffs in April. There's a lot of baseball left to be played.
