While 5.3 IP per GS beats the MLB average of 5.1, it did hurt the team. He was 5th on the team:

5.8 Gray

5.8 Bennett

5.7 Tolle

5.4 Early

5.3 Suarez

It's weird how he went 8 IP twice in April (2 of first 6 starts) then never again. He only went 7IP twice after April- both in September.

Never over 5.1 IP in May, July & August. It seemed like a strange plan, if that's what it was.

Sometimes it's just easy to forget that these guys are managing injuries!

Red Sox later announced that Suarez had departed with right hamstring tightness.

Suarez’s shortened outing came after his eight-inning, 10-strikeout gem against the Blue Jays in his previous start.

https://www.mlb.com/news/ranger-suarez-return-red-sox-rotation-left-groin-strain

Suarez suffered a left groin strain during his start on July 5, the day after he was named an All-Star for the second time in his career.

The plan was for Suarez to return several days ago, but an untimely illness delayed his return.

Ranger has a history of only going 150 IP, but people on here want him to go 180 IP next season for some reason.

And BOS may have been wrong about it.

Where Brez was wrong was having what could have been Alonso money allocated to Bregman, and he ended up with neither.

Yea, and that would take less strain off the BP, which would be a Good thing.

Him being on the IL even longer would take pressure off the BP??? Do you even read what you write?

There is no way to get him to pitch more than 150 IP.

No Suarez would have meant more pen games or someone like Paez pitching every 5 days.

Excellent post & info.

Brez wouldn’t have gotten another starter if they hadn’t of signed Ranger?

So your saying that pitching 5 innings is ok, but 6 innings isn’t?

No. He'd have used up all his money (and more.) He had 11 starters after Suarez.

Even if he did, you think the other guy goes 6-7 innings?

5IP vs IL is what he wrote.

I know what he wrote. I didn’t see any medical determination that says he could only pitch 5 instead of 6 innings. His career high is only 157innings, which is only 9 more than this year.

If Bregman would have signed there wouldn’t have been any Ranger anyway, so I have no idea what another pitcher would have done, but he wouldn’t have been $130M either.

His body can't handle it. He can only go 150 IP every year.

They knew this when he was signed.

And he had two different lower body issues that reduced his IP this year. Not sure how to manage that and expect to increase his innings. Magic?

Why didn’t Philly offer him a contract? Durability concerns?

He's certainly a better value costing you less than 1 million

I know some posters don't like to consider money, but you can't have a serious conversation if one does not want to consider the alternative uses of the cash.  And that's only one consideration.  Bregman is a fine player, but I'd wager that Durbin will be better in 2029-2030.

trust me i know it wasn't his fault he got injured. I am simply stating he provided nothing no matter the circumstances and he certainly doesn't excite me going forward although he probably be a decent but not great player based on his career to date.

Then, IMO, it is better to say he got hit by a pitch and missed the season, than to say he was a flop.

as it has been pointed out many times we should have signed Alonso AND Suarez

So we did sign Suarez.  And Alonso would only have replaced Contreras,

Yes Alonso would have replaced the Con Man with a BIGGER bat, which was needed.🤭

Well, they did extend Luzardo, not exactly a bastion of durability.  Ditto Wheeler.  Are we positive Philly didn’t try to extend him?  They did extend a qualifying offer, so it’s not like they just walked away.

It could be as simple as Philly decided not to spend well over $140mill on their 5 man rotation, and Suarez was allowed to walk, bring a free agent and all.

They were trying to cut payroll. Their roster management is kind of a mess right now and they don't really need more long term deals. I believe they have the oldest roster in MLB.

Red Sox lost. You know how it goes.

I'm happy they got Contreras. I wish they also got Alonso, but understand that it's not my money and know cheapo Henry doesn't want to play with the big boys anymore.

They imagined Painter coming in and replicating Suarez's production for a lot cheaper.

Well, if they had worries about Suarez’ durability, Painter did replicate that…

And I don't care, because I don't know if I will be here in 2029 or 2030 -- or if those years will even be.

I care about next season -- 2027, just like I cared about last season when it was happening or the one before that...

... watching the impotent Red Sox offense suck in Yankee Stadium as a final act, two seasons in a row.

Because Boston wasn't good enough. And go ahead and use the excuse that Bregman was on that 2025 playoff team -- ya, he played coming off an injury... and he had clean-up man Romy Gonzalez protecting him in the batting order, instead of Raffy Devers.

Now is only what matters, whenever now is. But that's just me; I'm sure there are plenty of Red Sox fans looking forward to 2029, when we might be really good.
