You're willing to give up on Roman Anthony so quickly? He was the #2 ranked prospect in all of Baseball just last year. Feels a bit hasty.

I can see giving up on Mayer. Some GMs might not even want him, but Anthony still has a lot of value, even if mostly specultaive.

Which is fine.  But Kade Anderson is really good.

I think it’s more of a statement about Kade Anderson than Anthony…

I can promise you zero GMs would not want Mayer.  Now, the number willing to give up something good to acquire him is up for debate…

Many fragile objects have a lot of value, but not in sports.

I would guess most GM's, except for the Sox, vet a player's injury history.

Most GMs do.  But Edward Cabrera still finds work every year.

If the Sox DFAd Mayer, do you think there are GMs that don’t try to claim him?

It's not even worth the band width to discuss.  Mayer would get claimed by every team.

He'd get claimed by the first team. The other teams wouldn't get the opportunity to make the claim.

For the sake of having a metric, BTV gives Mayer $29mill in surplus value.  I don’t think many teams want him at that price point, but I think every team does have an acceptable one for him.   That no team would take him period is ridiculous….

He's only 23. He still hasn't even played a full season. Anyone that is completely writing him off is unserious.

It is surprising how many have written of Mayer, Campbell and Anthony after the three have a combined total of about 1,000 plate appearances…

You've made some good points in the past -- like suggesting Mead -- but what have you done lately?

(this is baseball, and my eyes can't read every post every day; I already upped my glasses to 2.5)

With Campbell, they are at least seeing him struggle in AAA for an extended period of time and hearing less than flattering scouting reports.

Mayer wasn't a finished product offensively and needed time to adjust.

Anthony hit the crap out of the ball last year. Not sure how everyone forgot that so quickly. He'll be fine once he's healthy. Unlike Mayer, he didn't have health concerns in the minors.

No idea why, but didn’t they try to change too much about Campbell’s approach and swing? And maybe get rid of that toe tap?

He still has elite batspeed and only struggled for one month in MLB.  If he is learning to hit with a drastically different swing, of course he is going to struggle.  Although frankly, I thought they tried to fix something that might not have been broken…

Some concerning oddities surfaced: the almost Bello-1st inninglike throwing yips from the outfield (let's assume they were temporary)... but two injuries from swinging the bat too hard in two seasons cannot be ignored.

That's what sent Casas aboard the Flying Dutchman sailing into the Sargasso Sea of obscurity, never to be seen again.

And nobody is really writing them off.  Pessimism as a form of copium.

I haven't seen the scouting reports, but his numbers have been pretty good for a month+.

It does seem like some are "writing them off," or at least with Mayer and KC.

Wanting to trade someone is not the same as giving up on a player, unless you say "for scraps."

One factor that has played into this pessimism is the fact that so many of our players who go on the IL end up staying there for what seems like forever, or at least twice the expected timeframe. Often, they get another injury while on the IL. The Hendriks case is but one. Sandoval was supposed to come back last August or September, had the whole winter to get ready and has but 3 GS at this point in his 2 year deal. Crawford got a new injury and is just starting to throw. Crochet said he felt like he'd miss 2-3 starts, and now... Houck was known to be out for a long time. Oviedo may return, this year, but who expects that? We have 5 SP'ers on the 60 day IL.

Even before this year's disappointing season, the ZiPS three-year projections gave Marcelo Mayer only 0.7 WAR in 90 games in 2026, 0.8 in 95 games in 2027 and 1.0 WAR in 99 games in 2028.

Mayer may be a glove-first utility infielder whom Red Sox fans hold in higher regard than many MLB front offices would.

I think most Sox fans hold Mayer in very low regard, right now. (Hell, some want us to trade Anthony.)

He does still have trade value, but it has gone down a lot in the last 1.5 years. I think Sox fans know this.

You'll always have fans suggesting we trade Mayer, Casas, Yoshida and Story for Abrams, but that is not most Sox fans think.

He struggled last season with the old swing in AAA. He's struggling this year with the new swing. I'm not completely writing him off, but there will be a timetable for him.

Not surprising at all to me, or to the many that have done so. I don’t care if it’s only 100 total appearances between them. It’s the old here, and now, and what have you done for me lately, and lately that is not to much especially, because Marshmallow, and little a can’t stay on the field. It’s not a total write off yet, but hype, hope, and expectations only go so far.

The Sox really need to stop trying to change everyone’s swing…

You know who else can't stay on the field? Garrett Crochet. Bum! Deal him at the deadline even for a loss at this point. Terrible season. More like Garrett Sashay himself to the trainer's room.

Well, if you have only one trick in your bag of tricks, it's what you do. That's why the bunting was so exciting the other day. They need to be more well rounded and try to score in a bunch of different ways.

There’s a big difference between “this guy is terrible “ and “this guy is terrible this year.”

The difference is no one is questioning the Cro Man’s ability, and what he brings to the table. Big difference between him, and Marshmallow/little a. I don’t think it’s any big surprise that the Cro Man had some problems this year after having his first heavy workload of innings last year.
