The Boston Red Sox continue to add to their infield depth, as they signed Brendan Rodgers to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training as first reported by MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.

Rodgers is the second veteran infielder that Craig Breslow has brought into the organization in the past 24 hours, previously signing Isiah Kiner-Falefa to a one-year contract. Rodgers, who won a Gold Glove in 2022, will compete for a roster spot in spring training.

The veteran infielder spent most of his career for the Colorado Rockies where he played in 452 games from 2019 until 2024. In that time, he hit .266/.316/.409 with 92 doubles, eight triples, 45 home runs and 197 RBIs. Rogers spent the 2025 season with Houston where he appeared in 43 games and struggled offensively. Overall, he slashed .191/.266/.278 with four doubles, two home runs and 11 RBIs.

Offensively, Rodgers has a lot of swing and miss in his game and doesn’t walk enough to make up for it. In his short run with the Astros, Rodgers put up career highs in both walk percentage and strikeout rate at 8.6% and 35.9%, respectively. In 2025, his approach changed slightly as he began to pull the ball more in the air than he previously did in his career.

The Red Sox are no strangers to bringing in veteran players on minor-league deals and getting production out of them. Amidst a gaggle of veterans competing for time at second base, Rodgers could emerge as a key contributor in 2026.

Past their expiration date IF's in volume ?    Got to be secretly setting up for the big deal during ST where Bres trades 4 UT's for a legit 2Bman, but not likely.

Rodgers won't be having a big bat order after March 28th.   he doesn't use them

My theory is the Sox are going to take Hamilton, Rodgers, Cheng, and Kiner-Falefa and disassemble each and then use all best parts to build themselves their own brand new second-baseman - named Brendilton Chengalefa....

Too bad none of them can hit.

Looking at Rodgers, pre-2025, the guy looks like he might be able to hit over .720 or so, with a little bit of pop. While that is not great, and not what I wanted, it's probably better than we can expect from I K-F/DHam/Sogard/Eaton mix.

He hit .798 in 2021 with about 23 HRs and 60 XBHs per 650.

From 2022 to 2024, he hit .723 with about 15 HRs and 52 XBHs per 650.

While .720 is not great, and it wasn't what I was hoping for, it would almost certainly be better than a I K-F/DHam/Sogard/Eaton mix and maybe better than Mayer overall and Romy vs RHPs. He's only 29, so maybe he can do okay at bat. We know he can play defense.

Low-risk depth move, so I’m fine with it. If Rodgers has anything close to his 2022 form, he makes the spring competition more interesting and gives you a real option if the infield gets banged up.

Cheng most likely DFA'd before Opening Day.

Maybe sooner than that as we've added Durbin, I K-F, Montasterio, Rodgers & Seigler...

all with MLB experience.

We lost Bregman and DHam.

We have Eaton & Sogard on the 40, too.

I think all three Milwaukee players are on the 40 man roster.

We traded 3 on the 40, too, so no roster moves are needed, at this time.

Yeah, that was before they swapped two pitchers for two IFers on the 40 man. Probably need to add some relievers somehow.

I believe so as well.

Red Sox have 13 IFers on the roster right now:

KC

Casas

TCC

Contreras

Durbin

Eato

Gasper

Romy

Mayer

Monasterio

Seigler

Sogard

I think 2 RP'ers may come from whoever loses out of the 5 slot of the rotation: Oviedo, Crawford or Sandoval.

Of course, that assumes we break camp with no injuries.

I doubt we use Tolle or Early in the pen in April, but maybe Samaniego or Uberstine? We still have Kelly, Moran and Watson after the big 4: Chapman, Whitlock, Slaten & Weissert.

With four FT OF'ers and KC, Romy and Masa capable of playing the OF, we don't need help there, right now.

Plus Rodgers as very nice non 40 depth.

I'd say TCC goes and we add a RP'er or RHB OF'er.

Amazing. We may never see KC in the infield, again, but he does count as one.

I hope Casas becomes our DH someday, but he counts, too.

Cheng will be DFA'd, unless they like him more than Eaton.

Cheng has to be gone due to the lack of MLB time and options. There is nothing about him that is worth hanging onto.

Not sure what the interest level is in Justin Wilson, Danny Coulumbe and Jalen Beeks.

I don't know if having the most infielders equates to 1st, but Brez has loaded up to protect his top investment and groundball guy: Ranger Suarez.

Breslow also went to Yale, so he knows batters will have a tough time bouncing one between 13 gloves, compared to all the holes on other teams' infields.

Cheng's plus was his ability to play SS. Some of these recent additions have that covered, so I think TC Cheng will be DFA'd for I K-F.

If we add a RP'er maybe Eaton is next to go, although his OF abilities is useful depth.

Man when Brez seeks out to correct something like starting pitching need or infielder, he really goes out and gets it seven ways from sunday, huh

When the pendulum swings, it swings hard hard

A little worried he'll declare infield a surplus and trade 9 of em.

Gasper is for catching depth, not infield.

KC is the 5th OF'er. He's about the 8th string infielder.

Once we add I K-F, I think we DFA Cheng, so we'll be at about 6, in paratice.
