This series matters for playoff seeding; the Red Sox's magic number remains at one, with the Tigers currently occupying the No. 6 seed behind them.

Of course, Detroit is in absolute free fall over the last few weeks. Because the Tigers swept them earlier in the year, the Sox need to win two of three to lock in the No. 5 seed.

We seriously need to consider Romy Gonzalez as a regular next year and not as a platoon player. The guy is athletic, has power and can hit for average against both sides.

Better lineup than last night on paper.  Let's see how it goes on dirt and grass.

Still have to think hard about how a team gets to this type playoff eligibility  game after a 4 year drought and has to run a second start rookie out to the mound to secure that win.   Followed by the same situation tomorrow , if tonight doesn't work out.

Here's an idea.  Make it a BP game like Toronto did, but start with Wilson and Kelly so that there are plenty of innings to overcome the hole they will dig.

I think the Sox brass sees it this way, and they probably view Mayer as a FT'er, too.

I'd say, at least, he takes over Refsnyder's role as the big platoon bat vs LHPs, only, but he's be playing 1B, 2B and DH, and not corner OF.

If Lowe comes back, he could platoon at 1B and then maybe play some or all 2B vs RHPs.

Would you rather be the fifth seed and play a series in the Bronx , or would you rather be the sixth seed and play a series in Cleveland or Detroit ?

6th seed, but then the 3/6th seed plays at SEA, while the 4/5th seed plays at TOR.

I guess I don't have a real strong opinion on the choice.

Just keep winning!

Would rather play CLE or DET because those two teams aren't as good, but NYY would be more fun.

After not playing in the last three postseason just getting in the Red Sox should be willing to play everybody, and anybody. The AL is so flawed this year that anyone who gets in has a chance to win. This is uncharted waters for most of the Red Sox players so getting swept in the first round, or sweeping the first round wouldn’t surprise me at all, so bring anyone on especially the Yankees.

As the late, great judge and boxing referee Mills Lane would say, " Let's get it on " !!!

Absolutely prefer to go up against the Yankees with Crochet in the first game.   Let's see if they choke.

I would rather see a video of Abreu with a bat in his hand going up against live pitching to help his timing  recovery.   I guess it is still way too early to see that for Roman Anthony.

Bronx!! Never, never, never avoid a Sox-Yankees series (unless it’s for a bye)…

I would rather take it one game at a time. We aren’t even IN the playoffs just yet and this franchise has historically choked when it really mattered. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they got swept and backed into the postseason with an Astros loss.

If I had to guess, I'd say we clinch tonight with a 7-2 win.

HOU ends up passing DET for the last WC slot.

CLE wins the ALC, despite being sellers at the deadline. Their GM will not be fired for not doing more at the deadline.

The playoffs go like this:

5. BOS wins 2-1 v 4. NYY> BOS 3-1 over SEA

3. CLE wins 2-1 v 6. HOU> TOR 3-1 over CLE

BOS 4-2 over TOR

________________

4, CHC wins 2-1 v 5. NYM> CHC 3-2 over PHI

3. LAD wins 2-1 v 6. SDP> MIL>3-2 over LAD

CHC 4-2 over MIL

How about Yoshida at .982 the last 9 games?

He's also at a nearly acceptable .725 since the end of July (40 games.)

.741 last 23 games.

Once Anthony got hurt, we had few options at DH, but had he never got hurt, I wonder if Yoshida would even had been given a shot to do this.

"How long a leash?" I asked many many times.

The wild card series is best two out of three. The Division series is three out of five. The rest are four out of seven.

Thanks. I went back and edited.

Harrison must have changed his Depends after the first and is ready now to throw a complete game shutout. Except he may be near 90-100 pitches by the mid 6rh.

So there is room to squeeze Wilson or Kelly in
