Red Sox Among Front-Runners To Sign Third Baseman Alex Bregman

David Schoenfield of ESPN wrote that the Red Sox are one of several teams vying for Alex Bregman's services in 2025 and beyond. The list of teams is a collection of baseball heavyweights so competition may be fierce; along with the Boston Sox, interested parties include the Philadelphia Phillies, both New York teams, and the Houston Astros.

Bregman will play his age-31 season in 2025. He posted a 118 OPS+ last season and has a career 132 mark. Those are impressive but what Bregman would bring to the Red Sox infield is defensive stability at the hot corner: he has a career +27 DRS (Defensive Runs Saved) and +22 OAA (Outs Above Average).

And as our own Davy Andrews wrote early in the offseason, Bregman is a great fit to dent the Monster on a nightly basis.

If they sign Bregman to play 3B and move Devers into a 1B/DH combo with Casas, this makes sense.   If they sign Bregman to play 2B, that would just be stupid.

I get Cora knows Bregman personally, unlike me, and obviously has a much better idea of the guy's limitations and capabilities..  But moving him to 2B looks like a step towards  Jim Hendry Baseball, as that man's motto was "just get 8 good hitters and figure out the positions later."

I agree with notin. Bregman at 2B is not worth the upgrade. Hell, a DHam-Romy platoon or FT Campbell at 2B might have a higher OPS than Bragman had in 2024 (.768.) His 4 and 5 year OPS is just .795.

DHam hit .729 v RHPs, stole a ton of bases and played plus D at 2nd. Romy hit .879 v LHPs.

Bregman .791 and .712.

A big part of his value to the Sox would be to greatly improve or 3B D and maybe Devers at 1B could improve that.

It also allows us to rest Devers and Casas at DH, instead of on the bench.

I'm reading in various articles that Bregman could want somewhere in the neighborhood of 185m/7 years.

It's free agency so that could easily escalate to 190-200m based on the bidding.

I'm so ready for our owners to 'fall short' of the highest bid again. But let's see.

Adding a gold glove to the hot corner and kicking Devers to 1st would improve both our offense and defense in one move.

In this scenario Casas would become expendable in a trade for more pitching.

If the Red Sox sign Bregman for 190 and Burnes for 225, they will have spent half the money they earmarked for Soto, and still improved the team a decent amount. No these aren't headline superstar signings, but they would make the team more competitive going forward.

He has a .795 OPS over the last 5 years. That's pretty good, but if we trade Casas, it is no upgrade on O. If we DFA or trade Yoshida, I'm not sure Bregman is much of an upgrade over a Yoshida-Ref DH platoon.

He has had horrific starts to some seasons, recently.

I'd like to see us sign him, and he should be okay on O, as he ages, but he's not great on offense. A Casas-Devers 1B-DH share would be ideal.

If anyone here believes JH is going to spend any serious money on any FA still standing who could improve the team is delusional.

This team needs a new owner. And if I'm proved wrong about the above, I'll be glad to eat crow.

If the SOX were serious about signing Burnes, the deal would have already been made.

I could see the FO trying to make a trade for Jones of the Pirates. He's young and appears to have a high ceiling. However, the trade would  probably have to include Mayer.

Moon, would you trade Abreu and Mayer for Jones?

I like the RHB more than Bregman's bat, but Bregman's D would be a big plus, and our OF is our strength.

If the Teoscar signing got us a good pitcher for Abreu, fine.
