Juan Soto spent last week meeting with a variety of teams including our Red Sox. While the meeting with the Red Sox was introductory and didn't include discussions about money, we now know what the 26-year-old superstar is looking for in a deal.

Marino Pepén reports that Soto is looking for a 12-14 year deal with an average annual salary of $45 million and would like opt outs after years three and four.

That deal would put him in the ballpark of the $600 million that many have speculated he would net this offseason.

The opt-outs is a newer trend amongst some of the leagues top players, including the Minnesota Twins Carlos Correa and the Chicago Cubs Cody Bellinger, so it isn't totally surprising for Soto to make that request.

For the New York Yankees in 2024, Soto posted a .989 OPS with 41 home runs, seven stolen bases, and a 119:129 K:BB ratio.

Would you be comfortable with the Red Sox meeting these demands?

What better way to start showing the fan base you’re back, break them out of the fog of not expecting big things, and turning into contender than going out and signing Juan Soto?

probably the biggest no brainer we’ve had in here in years.

What worries me about signing Soto is the fact that we know JH will cut the budget at some point and his deal may be 20-25% of our whole payroll.

i've been saying all along there is no way he signs with the Sox. i now predict that he narrows it to the Sox and Yankees and then signs with Boston. NY then pivots to and signs Bregman.

Personally I think if they succeed in signing Soto, it can't be anything but a good sign about where Henry's head is at.

maybe his ego has finally grown tired of watching the Yankees and Dodgers get all the glory and headlines.

Big Papi said he's confident about Soto coming to Boston.

That would seem like a very positive note, since Ortiz is close to both the Red Sox and the Sotos.

Then again, David was also confident last summer about the Sox making some big deadline moves that would thrust them into the playoffs...

... if the mouthpieces in the front office are deceiving Big Papi, what does that say about how they're treating the fans? (sorry, until something really good actually happens, I still get the creeps -- like the franchise also produces horror movies that buy World Series front row seats and pays dupes to stand there fake-smiling all night).

Papi on board can't hurt.

I guess it all comes down to where Mr. Soto truly wants to spend the majority of his career.

And what hat he wants on his bust in Cooperstown…

Well at that point he’s either opted out or the Sox have traded him.  Sox aren’t signing Soto then packing it up and being frugal with him here

Absolutely. Only 45m per year? Give him the long term deal and lock him up for life! I was thinking he would want closer to 50m+ per year to be honest.

I doubt JH stays a big spender for the 12-14 years of Soto’s deal.

And LA and NY will stay over the luxury tax threshold too for 12-14 years?

I have no idea. I’m just pointing out that signing Soto will squeeze the budget a few time going forward.

i still hope we sign him, but let’s not pretend JH will keep on spending.

If they sign Soto it’s because they’re expanding the budget.  I believe if they sign someone like Soto, they’re going out and getting pitching too.
