MLB.com has Corbin Burnes as #2 rated Free Agent (age 30) and has Orioles, Mets and Sox as potential home.

With the return of Giolito, he may be the only starter we need to get us over the hump.

I like our OF of Duran, Rafaela and Abreu. I like our corner infielders, Devers and Casas. Our catching will be more than adequate with Wong and a partner. Trevor Story should fill in at short or 2B. I'm hesitant to break up what's good.

We also have Campbell, Mayer, Anthony and Teel in waiting.

Burnes interest kings!

Right! Why take two steps back in hopes of taking two steps forward?

He's under team control for 4 more years (starting in 2025).

Yes, it's just crazy talk.

4 years of Casas (plus others) for 3-4 years of an ace is crazy talk?

I'm all for the idea of signing Burnes, but if JH keeps his wallet closed, how else do we get an ace?

I'm fine with the opinion of keeping Casas, but who would you tarde instead as the centerpiece for an ace with 3+ years of control?

Anthony?

Mayer?

Teel?

Campbell?

We aren't getting an ace without at least one of those 4 going to the other team.

Also, counting on Gio as even a #3 is pushing it, and I'm not even counting injury issues.

I'm not getting my hopes up, but signing Burnes would take the heat off trading a top prospect for an ace. I'd still think we need another SP'er, but we could then look at trading Abreu and another mid-level prospect or two for a solid #2/3 types to go with Burnes and the returning Gio.

Mid levels might include selling low on Bleis, Cespedes, Arias, Meidroth, Fitts or Sandlin.

I'm not sure what sort of SP'er we could get for say... Abreu, Cespedes and Fitts, but I'd think he'd be good enough to slot here:

1. Burnes

2. Houck

3. Gio/___

4. ____/Gio

5. Bello

Hahahaha…. Full throttle

Well, a .386 FIP since 2018 is a full "half-throttle."

(115 ERA+)

To be honest, I'll be shocked, if we spend as much or more on any FA SP'er for what Flaherty gets, this winter.

This is what I was talking about the other day. Some media outlet - based on roster and suspected team needs- goes and publishes that the Sox are a good candidate to land Corbin Burnes. I forget why I was posting about it, but anyway.

The Sox aren’t a serious candidate here. I think we’ve all learned that. There’s a better chance of Bigfoot playing for the Sox next year than Burnes…

I have to agree. If the Sox were talking "full throttle," last winter and cut salary totals and added just Gio, why should we expect a Price-like deal after silence?

I think the worst think about “full throttle” was Werner’s lame ass explanation. “It’s my motto I live by. It’s how I do everything.”

Except run the Red Sox, right Tom?

Flaherty is fine. I'd just say don't get your hopes up.

Sox will be "candidates" for most of the pitchers on the market but will be mysteriously outbid each time.

Bob Stanley, the Red Sox all-time leader in games pitched and relief wins, will only be 70 in November.

But the only way Breslow and Bailey get him to come out of retirement is if he's injured, and has to rehab, then throw on flat ground, before reporting to Woocester for some bullpens and three-batter minimums.

Steamer should be ready by October, 2025.

Walker Buehler and Shane Bieber have to be on the Sox radar. Formerly aces, coming off of an injury, will probably sign a 1-2 year deal to rebuild value.

That feels more John Henry's taste than Burnes. But if I was crowned Empreror of Boston I'd sign one of those guys and Burnes.

Burnes

Houck

Bello

Crawford

Criswell/Fitts/Preister/someone else.

With Beiber coming back mid season.

I'm sure this won't happen. Sox seemingly don't have to spend a dime on position players, they have roughly $62.00 million to spend before going over the cap.

This is the part where I'm supposed to say they will spend big on pitching because not only is there a need but there's seemingly nowhere else to put the money. But no one seems better than spending their money and making it look like they didn't spend any money than John Henry.

A bench bat, a bullpen arm, a fringey starting pitcher, an extension and a reclamation project all adding up to 40-50 million dollars.

5th starter would be Giolito?

Could've sworn I heard that before, but it's not repeatable.

Unclutch is repeatable in Boston. See: Melancon, Mark.

Melancon was one of those guys who hated the bright lights, for sure.

He was San Diego's closer before they got good again. He was the Pirates closer when he was at his peak. Even got CY votes!!! That's when the Pirates were good, but I have a hard time counting that. Zero saves, one blown win, 6.48 ERA in the 3 years of playoffs for the Bucs as their closer. I'll give him that he finally had a nice run with ATL when he was in his mid 30's. I'll attribute that to baseball is LOL random.

With no active trade thread, there's still been lots of trade buzz here in our never-ending quest to acquire big league pitchers. Three of the young men discussed as possible trade bait also happen to be Red Sox high school draftees with promising left-handed slugging potential.

For a standard high school first-rounder -- how about #1 overall pick Chipper Jones (who sometimes batted lefty)? Jones made the majors at age 21, and the Hall of Fame at 46. His MLB career lasted 19 years with 162-game averages of 30 HRs, 105 RBI, .303/.930.

So who -- if anyone -- will be the closest thing to Jones' production: Casas, Anthony or Mayer?

Jones and Casas each had their first full big league seasons at age 23; Larry hit 23 homers, while Tris hit 24. In three full years in the minors, Jones had longball totals of 13, 13 and 15. Anthony, in two full years, has 14 and 16 (so far). Mayer, in partial seasons, hit 13, 13 and 8...

All were or are big, strong guys, so this may be impossible to predict -- but if it comes down to health, we know Casas and Mayer have already had some nagging injuries. Right now, Anthony's build may be more supple... (until he fills out, his metabolism slows down, and he starts losing his hair - many years from now).

He didn't realize he was running on JH's treadmill. Running full out and getting nowhere, fast.

Hugh, all you have to do is change the 2023/24 in your signature line to 2024/25 and you're good to go.

This is the first time someone has used supple appropriately without getting banned. Thank you.

The issue with Casas is that there are underlying health concerns and he doesn't seem inclined to extend. Aside from that, I love everything about him as a player. I love that he's weird. I love that he mashes. I love that he was brought up in this system. I love that he has a position and we're not asking if he has to be moved elsewhere.

Except many are asking for Devers to move to his position, implying a Casas trade or a move to DH and a Yoshi trade.

How can we say that without knowing what they offered him?

The "many" are just us wild ass guessers, not guys who actually work for the team.
