All that matters is JH saved a few bucks.

"Full throttle"

What a joke. Saw some of yesterday's game, including Duran botching a catch in left field and Devers botching a ground ball-leading to unearned runs. SSDD. Same as last year. Crap defense and a bad SP staff. Another last place finish on tap.

Henry needs to sell the team.

I have never seen a "soon to be active" player get more love on this site than Vaughn Grissom. Yes he shows potential, is under contract control going forward, and played a SSS on a good team.

But it's more of a statement on the barking dogs now playing infield than the skills and abilities of Grissom , who needs to get on the field and AB and do something beneficial before he becomes the answer to 2B or SS. Good luck to him, but he needs to perform.

A guy with multiple leg injuries should be considered more of a suspect than a prospect at this stage.

It's all been conditional love.

I'm not buying the Red Sox defense suddenly sucks as a team at all other positions because they lost their best glove at shortstop.

I'm not buying that the Red Sox defense still sucks because their manager can't wave a magic wand and force professionals to be better at catching and throwing.

I'm not buying tickets, hot dogs, beer and t-shirts at Fenway Park this year -- because Breslow's not buying major league talent -- because Henry's not buying major league talent.

The Red Sox get what I'm not paying for.

You're right, of course.

However, John Henry is still the best owner in Sox history. I don't know what key decisions he did or didn't make, but as a minimum he hired a front office who knew when to fire people and how to build a team that ended the 86 year "curse" and brought home 4 WS.

It now seems apparent that the hiring of Chaim Bloom 5 years ago signaled a sea change--as you say, a smaller team payroll. For most of JH's 20+ seasons as owner, the Sox were at or near the top. Now they're in the middle.

Meanwhile, the value of the Sox franchise keeps getting bigger and is currently $4.5B.

It's true that attendance at Fenway has dropped from about 3 million 15 years ago to 2.7 million last year, but guess what? The Yankees attendance, despite their continuing to spend big on players, has dropped from 3.7 million to 3.3 million over the same period. The Dodgers attendance has gone up from 3.7 million to 3.8 million.

And there's also the tiny, insignificant fact that last year the Orioles and Rays, with their infinitesimal team salaries, came in 1st and 2d in the toughest Division in MLB. And the Yankees finished 4th, just 4 games ahead of the Sox, and didn't make the playoffs.

Biggest payroll last year? Mets, who finished 75-87. Yankees were 2d biggest. 3d biggest were the Padres, who finished 82-80, also 4 games ahead of the Sox. 4th biggest, Rangers, won the WS. 5th biggest, Philly, made it to the NLCS, where they lost in 7 games to the Diamondbacks, whose payroll was 21st in MLB.

I'm not saying JH is right or wrong. I admit I wish we still had Mookie, but there are also plenty of examples of bringing in and keeping players who didn't earn their salaries.

Time will tell.

The only reason that attendance hasn’t dropped as much as it should have is because

the opposing teams fans are coming to Fenway in bigger numbers, and especially last year. I heard a couple of days ago that yesterday was not a sellout, so I don’t know if it stayed that way, or not.

That's criminal! The Sox need to start vetting ticket-purchasers. I can't think of many things worse than fans rooting for the visiting team. The exact same thing led to the decline and fall of the Roman empire.

Stunning. I've been a Sox fan since 1949, but I have attended games at Fenway just twice, and both times I hated it. I've also been to MLB games in the new stadium in DC, Camden Yards in Baltimore, the Royals park in KC, and the old Phillies park in Philadelphia. And I'm here to say that, while Fenway Park is wonderfully photogenic, it has the worst sightlines in MLB.

Don’t forget the small built for comfort seats.

Conditioned on the fact that all the other options are dog s***.

Not to me.

I really like Grissom and am very confident he will bf a fine 2Bman for us over the next 5 years. The condition is that my opinion is not based on a large MLB sample size.

The urgency is related to other poorer options, yes.

Grissom is different than waiting on old, rehabbing vets like Paxton or Mondesi or Hendricks, etc. to maybe make a comeback.

Grissom is unproven youth, vitality and promise, hope for the future.

Until he comes off the IL and actually plays for the Red Sox...

Vaughn Grissom is the next Boston superstar, a combination of Nomar and Bogey, slicing pitches all over Fenway, smiling for cameras, the idol of boys, breaking girls hearts!

Grissom is that unopened 1968 wax pack, series 3... inside are five mint condition baseball cards -- and as long as it's unopened, the pack certainly includes Yaz, Mantle, the Johnny Bench rookie card, Kaline, Killebrew, Rose, Cepeda or Marichal.

But once opened, what you see is what you get: Larry Brown. Carroll Sembera. Fred Klages, Mel Queen, and Paul Popovich. Make that doubles of Popovich...

Sure they do, and Red Sox fans are everywhere, but that doesn’t change the fact that more opposing fans have taken over Fenway the past couple of years, which has been seen, and mentioned on the broadcast, and in the papers.

And for many, opening day at Fenway is a ceremony itself, not to be missed. This game, at least, was a sellout — and team staff report they've sold nearly 1.7 million tickets so far, on pace with last year.

I never said attendance had dropped, but only why it hasn’t like it should have.

You said the game wasn't a sellout.

Maybe Breslow will give him an 8 year contract.

guy hasn't played a game yet but he is the saviour. Meanwhile what are the plans to replace Story at a fairly important position?

Red Sox games pal.

Is MLB different in Atlanta?

Only 236 PAs, but that's 236 more than Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kyle Teel combined...

Nobody has come close to calling him a savior or great player.

Saying the guy should be better than Arroyo/Valdez/Kike/Urias/Reyes is not anointing him as anything more than maybe better than replacement level. He'll likely be an improvement on D. The O is harder to call.

It's also more than EValdez, DHam and about the same as Romy

Valdez is just flat out useless. If you can't field, you need to at least be able to get your OPS+ up over 82. He's like an even more useless Dalbec...
