If this is true, it would have shown up on a physical. If he was already hurt, sure it may be true.

He was also hit with a divorce and had his wife leave him, which lines up almost exactly with the time he went from good to falling off a cliff. Baseball is a physical and a mental game and both those factors can affect a mans performance......But there's at least some evidence of one being true because we know for a fact he was hit with some real life s***. The later is pure speculation.

I would have been ok signing him if he was injured, if it was in the mold of a Hendricks/Paxton deal, but it wasn't a rehab contract, it was a pillow contract designed for him to play well in 2024 and opt out. If the Sox knew he was injured, shame on them.

He also switched teams twice for the first time in his career. It was a real crazy year for him and not a surprise that he struggled.

Of course they didn't know.

My main argument is that his finish was a monster red flag one way or the other.

It was another dumpster dive type signing.

If he did pitch well in 2023 he would have opted out anyway.

It's just more of the same disgusting, losing approach.

Yeah, he was supposed to just be an innings eater, but was the only big get of the offseason. The rotation was still kind of a mess before he even went down with an injury. Most of us saw this as another punt by the ownership.

Wacha worked out well. Others, okay.

The list shows more mehs & failures than good deals for us.

That's not to say we should never sign top SP'ers, again. I think we need to- many & often.

They need to, but they don't want to.

It could be a combination of all the things mentioned, but either way it doesn’t appear to have worked out. Like I said before that Gio wasn’t going to make, or break this season anyway for the Red Sox, and I don’t believe his injury is going to shake up JH to get on the phone with Brez all desperate, and ask what are we going to do now our season just went down the drain, and tell Brez to now go full throttle, and go out, and sign Monty, or Snell.

The list gives reason to not want to, with Gio being the cherry on top.

It's taken forever for them to create a system that generates homegrown starters, and we still are not sure it's gotten any better, recently.

We've basically survived off trading for aces and occasional success (usually short-lived) with signing some.

the good news is that Gilotio will not opt now so we have him for 2 years now

He might even get in some games in 2025.

Gotta look at the bright side, you're right.

The latest diagnosis is he likely has Tommy John surgery. If that does happen, he’s probably out until July, 2025.

This would be his second procedure if he has one…

I guess they'll just create a roster with no starting pitching then?

Bright side being him being the Opening Day starter in 2026 after they pick up the option after he pitches under 140 innings in 2025 and the Sox pay him only 14M to pitch in 2026?

He was well over the 600 innings!

Glass half full: This injury will give " Gio " more time to get over his divorce. Maybe find somebody new. Might help his pitching going forward.

Per his appearance on the Name Redacted podcast, he was spending Spring Training living with his new girlfriend.

@bradfo

Per source, Red Sox do not have insurance on Lucas Giolito’s contract

Told you. They can't afford the insurance!

There was a report a few years ago that the Sox generally don't insure contracts. Insurers are like casinos - the house wins more than it loses or they wouldn't be in business.

But even casino payoff jackpots once in a while . This would have been one, but insurance cannot eat up innings, so which would you rather have , insurance or a functional pitcher ? In this case the Sox have neither.

We'd probably need a look-see at the premiums first.

Are you going to ask about the deductible or out of pocket max too?

All's I know is Henry doesn't believe in it, and I'm guessing he crunched a number or two before arriving at that conclusion.

Ever bought life insurance?

Yes. But in this case the team would already have performed an exam and I assume would provide all the material to the insurer. So it would be a second exam that might reveal an issue the first exam didn't show. Would the Players Association be OK with that?

I think if insuring big contracts for pitchers was affordable, every single one would be insured...

Agreed. I can obviously see why it’s done. But it has to be a profitable venture for the insurance companies. And the only way to keep the cost down for injury-prone pitchers is to also insure the lesser risks…
